Western United announce clear intentions to play in BallaratAfter months of speculation, the community has finally been given its strongest indication yet on whether new A-League club Western United will play competition games in Ballarat with the backing of the club's chiefs.Speaking exclusively to The Courier, director of football at Western United Steve Horvat said while no games have been confirmed, the club is working hard to establish itself within Ballarat."Our CEO Maurice Bisetto has been in discussion with Mars Stadium and the region about playing at least two or three games per season in Ballarat until our stadium is built in our third season," Horvat said.Horvat added that within the club "there's definitely an appetite and discussion that we're having with Ballarat in terms of playing some games over the next two seasons in Ballarat." Koby Antsis is excited at the prospect of potential A League matches in Ballarat. Photo: Lachlan Bence.Horvat confirmed that if Western United were to play A-League games in Ballarat next season, they would be at Mars Stadium and not Morshead Park. He said this was purely a logistical decision to accommodate for the number of fans attending the game.
"Our club is about putting the supporters first. Although we'd love to play on a rectangle stadium we just feel that we won't be able to accommodate the numbers we would expect to draw for an A-League game at Morshead."Although (Morshead Park) is a great facility and I know there's a discussion going on in the region about upgrading the ground to a bigger capacity which I think would be great for the region, in terms of hosting A-League opposition we have to look at Mars Stadium."

Bit naive to expect 10-15k at the Ballarat games. Should really prioritise on selling out Morshead and making an event out of it.

I just can't see them upgrading Morshead Park any further when they have a half-finished Northern Oval they need to justify spending the money on. The Liberal council here already think the AFL ground is a waste of money, and the Western Bulldogs have publicly stated they would rather upgrade Whitten Oval for games that would otherwise go to Ballarat. But there is a push to expand this stadium by the state government so having two A-League games in Ballarat, and eventually a VFL side here once more might be enough for it to go ahead.
Although there is a very good chance the WU matches in Ballarat will be a flop. I am assuming they will be played here over January while Kardinia Park has its cricket pitch in for the BBL. Problem is, there is no one in Ballarat in January, we are all down the Surf Coast. I only every watch BBL games in Geelong, and if it wasn't Victory I would watch A-League games down there as well.

Bit naive to expect 10-15k at the Ballarat games. Should really prioritise on selling out Morshead and making an event out of it. Given how much of the market the Victory have including Geelong having played games down there the last few years. Maybe they should play the derby/derbies in Ballarat. More chance of getting people that have had zero exposure to the A League in their backyard to follow them.
Away day in Ballarat would be good.

I totally get the love for Morshead in terms of its shape...but it's not exactly a place heaving with atmosphere, even when you do get three or four thousand people there. If anything families would go, get stuck standing somewhere on the hill for a couple of hours behind someone and not see a thing. Doesn't really encourage people to go back. Northern Oval is a great little stadium, the big problem is its sightlines.

Our CEO Maurice Bisetto has been in discussion with Mars Stadium and the region about playing at least two or three games per season in Ballarat until our stadium is built in our third season," Horvat said.Horvat added that within the club "there's definitely an appetite and discussion that we're having with Ballarat in terms of playing some games over the next two seasons in Ballarat." its interesting to note that WU representatives seem to be pushing the "our stadium will be built by season 3" narrative a lot in recent recent weeks. is this in repsonse to the naysayers? Or is this a hint that something more concrete will be shared with the public soon? perhaps both?

+xWhat are they meant to say? " it will be ready within a decade"? I'm suggesting they wouldn't be talking about it at all if they weren't confident it it will be completed by October 2021.

It only took 1.5 years to built Parramatta Stadium that's double the size so having it ready by or during season 3 is possible.

True, but the land at Tarneit could have some unknown issues that could require extra work and blowout the timeline. Parramatta was a tear down and rebuild so there would have been far less unknowns. Paramatta was also government funded, meaning that the project is practically guaranteed to be completed. Tarneit is privately funded, meaning that if there is a budget blowout there is no guarantee it will actually be completed on time or at all. Considering that they haven't even started preparing the land yet, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the completion date is pushed back at least another season.

Parramatta already has all the utilities in place ready to go. Tarneit needs infrastructure. So we’re talking upgrading power mains, gas, water capacity and all those key infrastructure items that simply wouldn’t be close to tapping into on a current farm to serve patronage of 15,000 at the one place at the one time. While I get Probuild can dedicate the man power and resources for the actual build these items are carried out by authorities who can take a huge amount of time to get any traction with and would need a heap of criteria fulfilled with design before they can bring it to the future precinct.

I am 99% sure the Wyndham Council is a silient owner. Perhaps even the majority owner. That would suggest the project is guaranteed to be completed.

With the independant HAL, there is no real pressure on WU to complete the stadium on time or even at all really. Will be interesting to see how this progresses.

https://www.realcommercial.com.au/news/melbourne-cow-paddocks-150m-transformation-to-underpin-new-a-league-franchise Dated Dec 18 WMG plans to begin construction on the stadium by about this time next year, having struck a deal with the council to gain access for the land. Driving the deal has been Kate Roffey, an experienced sports and business executive appointed by Wyndham City Council to chase deals that will act as catalysts for economic growth in the region. “There is a lot of housing and not so many facilities nearby,” said Mr Bisetto. “So Kate’s role has been to find projects like ours that bring people to it, rather them having to work or go to sport in the city.”

Still 5 or so months to go until December, and all the public comments still seem to have them talking it up as on schedule. As for the Barcelona link, wouldn’t read into it much yet but if it comes off, it certainly would boost the potential pathways.

+xAgreed tbh. One would hope Macarthur FC are allowed in the cup next season. they will be. I don't think they excluded WU from the FFA cup because they couldn't have built a squad in time. They did it because the FFA didn't have time to make adjustments to the format. If there were 11 HAL teams this year, it means 1 less NPL team at the round of 32 level. So which state or team would have missed out on a spot? Of course there will be 12 HAL teams in 2020, but they have another 7 months to find a solution. something they didn't have when they annouced the new licences last December.

I would assume WU asked to be excluded from the FFA Cup this season just in case recruiting wasn't going well. Just a thought.
