It's pretty clear this attempt is all about getting extra money rather than appealing to their fan base. They had originally planned to primarily play at Kardinia for the 3 years while the Tarneit stadium was being built. Now they don't want to do that. Playing home games at AAMI against MV and MC would maximise their ticket revenue as way more MV and MC fans would attend games compared to other venues. If it was actually about venue capacity and facilities, Kardinia would not be a problem at all. It's all about vulturing money from MV and MC fans.

Not necessarily.
They did try to move away from kardinia park last year too. Obviously crowds were ordinary and paying too much for ground hire.

They probably also realised having a catchment area from the Westgate bridge to Torquay to Ballarat to Tullamarine airport is ridiculous.

The idea that a new Melbourne team could have its own catchment area was always ridiculous.
I'm guessing the Victory have fans in every direction.
City has tried to capture whatever fan is already not a Victory fan.
Furthermore, the concept of having a new stadium in the extreme outer suburbs is also ridiculous.
The FFA had the very best solution staring them in the face:  South Melbourne playing in South Melbourne.

Tarneit isn't extreme outer suburb . Its still 30 to 45 mins away from the Melbourne cbd.  If they went say Rockland and or Melton then you could say that. And Melton isn't even a suburb of Melbourne

I guess the AFC would let us off the hook on that one if we trotted out the covid excuse due to the need for social distancing, but what about the year after next when the pandemic is over and WU still haven't gotten their act together?

Well then if social distancing has been removed, WU will go to the Western Oval and Knights stadium as they have said.

I think that's the main reason they want AAMI, cause of Covid. News was they planned to use Whittan Oval, Knights stadium and possibly the oval in Werribee for a few matches each, but due to covid restrictions. It probably costs more then they will make to use these locations needing covid safety measures to be set up.

WU also went awfully close to winning first up, hardly any teams own their stadiums in Australian pro sports. As lomg as WU play in a purpose sized stadium, its perfect whether it be in Wyndham, Werribee, Tarneit wherever. What really matters is Poi Bo's social media platform and Besart's stern look before a match.

The Dandenong bid would have been so much better in so many ways. That's probably the one part of Melbourne that is an untapped market. And they could have played in Casey Fields until the council's stadium was ready.

Western United may come good in the long run, when the western suburbs of Melbourne is filled in with housing, but that's a decades-long process and there's no guarantee they'll make it till then. Should just stick with Whitten Oval and forget about any other grounds until their own one is built.

WU's upcoming training facilities are promising.
The main field could hold afew thousand to start with I believe.
The Dandenong bid didn't have a stadium eiher.
Using Casey fields is like WU using Whitten Oval.
Melbourne on the other hand should by rights
Be able to carry two football teams easily with all the football people down south.
Its just that they support their Npl teams but choose not to join the A League and support Melbourne City for instance, seeing as they are in the top flight league.

WU should have as much value as Dandenong would have had in the S/E of Melbourne, both areas growing and a work in progress.
Also, as Sydney can house Wanderers and the Bulls just in the west and S/W, Melbourne can accomodate two teams across the whole of their City,
and WU in the west of the other two teams.

From a fanbase/population point of view, absolutely Victoria can support a team in the West and the East. However, from a facilities point of view Victoria cannot. Key difference is Sydney already have appropriate stadiums for their clubs. Victoria has nothing in the East or West. WU has not even broken ground yet in Tarneit. If there was already a suitable stadium for WU in the west, we would not be having discussions like this.

Hahahah so the npl fans who support exisiting clubs are to blame for a team no one wants or asked for?  We should give up on generational support for our clubs for a made up franchise so we can join a competition we where told we are not wanted in??? Hahaah this is all on new football  buddy.

Yep very true.
Kardinia actually has a larger capacity than AAMI so it can certainly handle the whole social distancing situation especially when WU crowds rarely went to 25% Capacity

In the Melbourne context this shouldn’t be a problem, the 10 AFL sides play out of two stadiums in the CBD.
Having WU play at AAMI should be no big deal and should have been anticipated.
Much like the days of Olympic Park when several teams played out of there.

Whilst it aint ideal, theres a chance that it may be excepted as a covid prevention measure. The following season they can return to using Whittan Oval and play out of Knights stadium, and hopefully after 2 more years the stadium is completed or at least well on the way.

Why not go for Marvel instead?
Only one other AL side plays there.
It has cheaper fees than AAMI.
All western train lines stop at Southern Cross.
If the govt sets capacity restrictions at 25%-50%, that puts max potential attendance at 13,750 - 27,500 (perfect for the derbies).
It would be just like using Kardinia, except far quicker and easier to get to.
