Hahahah so the npl fans who support exisiting clubs are to blame for a team no one wants or asked for?  We should give up on generational support for our clubs for a made up franchise so we can join a competition we where told we are not wanted in??? Hahaah this is all on new football  buddy.
These snake oil salesman convinced ( bribed) fat Nick, dopey Greg and absolute f#cking slimey parasite Gallop that they where the best alternative to Team 11 coz they had backers behind them and most importantly where not associated with South Melbourne or Greek soccer people in general....  Why listen to the recommendation of Deloitte anf Fox and select an existing club with a 40 year lease on a ground, a junior set up, womens and mens squads all ready to go and membership that, although quite small compared to Aleague, is at least fiercely loyal and more than Steve Horvat, his kids, a few family members of the players and the sponsors?
The day seems to be fast approaching where some of these ultra professional super Aleague powerhouse clubs will be on shaky ground.. How many fans will stick with WU when they are told they cant participate in the Aleague without a home ground and have to spend some time in the NPL to establish themselves first?  If the A league was to go tits up next year, how many franchises do you think would survive for 15 years playing at state level? At most Victory, Adelaide, Newcastle, Hakoa and maybe Glory ... the rest gonskis. I think this will be put to the test in the next 2-3 year... I hope not, for the fans sake, I hope the muppet owners care enough about thier clients to want to turn things around but... for WU.... a huge F#ck you!!!!!!!! Their very existence offends me and  I hope it all comes crashing down around them soon.

I have foreign etnicity and prefer to have a second division in already, so any club can get back into the top league, and its much more interesting a product.
The obvious reason names like Hellas, Croatia, Apia, Marconi Rockdale Iinden do not play top flight even though they more than likely could, is because they do not appeal to the majority public. They sound and are monoethnic. Thats you.
That is the market the original FFA was targeting, and that continues to be the case today.
They are not Australian names so they won't get in, in a pink fit. Take that to the bank!
Nrl, Afl, Nbl and to a lesser extent Rugby will be seen as Australian and Football will be wog soccer. If the new Independent board start to target the likes of the rusted on supporters, then, second division With pro/rel will come into existence.
Attracting sponsorships will be more difficult to come by, if the board do not target the majority.
Not my decision but theirs.

Why not go for Marvel instead?
Only one other AL side plays there.
It has cheaper fees than AAMI.
All western train lines stop at Southern Cross.
If the govt sets capacity restrictions at 25%-50%, that puts max potential attendance at 13,750 - 27,500 (perfect for the derbies).
It would be just like using Kardinia, except far quicker and easier to get to.

You're making perfect sense, but the AFL would never have it. Even if it meant losing money from having the stadium sit empty over summer, they'd never give an inch to their mortal enemy.

Victory only play there as they locked in a long term contract on favourable terms with the previous owners shortly before the AFL took over, and now the AFL are contractually bound by it and apparently livid to be so, which makes playing there feel so much better.

In the Melbourne context this shouldn’t be a problem, the 10 AFL sides play out of two stadiums in the CBD.

There's logic in what you say, but I think some big mistakes have been made by football administrators in the past and present applying cultural norms from AFL and NRL to football.

I think there's no problem for all the Melbourne AFL teams to play out of the two stadiums because they've had 100+ years to build that culture before they started abandoning their namesake suburbs. I think football fans in Australia need a cultural point of difference to keep them at their club's terrace.

I really hope that there might be a day when Victory, South Melbourne, City, Western United, Team 11, Melbourne Knights and Heidelberg are all pulling 40k+ crowds week in week out and we could all play out of two shared stadiums as well without taking a cultural relevance penalty, but that day is a while off yet.

Sorry I dont understand your point? FFA are targeting the fans of ethnic clubs, who they want to turn into a league fans but then in turn also have a second division with.... what clubs, more existing ones ?

The day Ffa allow teams in with foreign names, will be when I will change my view on whether Ffa are marketing towards monoethnic culture teams, 40 year old or 40 day old clubs.
You will not see them in, thats life.

Victory and City don't own the stadiums they play in. Hopefully WU build it .

Victory and City weren't basing their entire reason for existing on building a ground.

Having WU play at AAMI should be no big deal and should have been anticipated.
Much like the days of Olympic Park when several teams played out of there.

And you what, it's one of the big reasons i could never get into AFL. How can your home matches be something special and unique if the only unique match day tradition you can have is what colours are you wearing and which barbershop quartet song gets played first?

Everyone goes to the same pubs, sits in the same seats, has the exact same experience and frankly its just too stale for me and that's before you get to the fact that there is no longer a direct connection between the clubs and the communities that they are named after.

Frankly in the todays football context, i think the failure of heart/city is more than enough evidence for us to never encourage teams sharing stadiums again.

Draw released and lots of TBC venues for WU.

I understand covid has thrown a spanner in the works and these things take time, but like I said, the football community really needs to turn the pressure up on them. I do want them to be successful on and off the pitch, but it was the supposed centrepiece of their bid. They've kinda been given a free pass so far in my opinion.

Hey, there are a few posters on here that seem to be in the building industry. Does anyone know what size parcel of land, previously designated as a future soccer stadium, is required in order for new Westfield to be built to service a future housing estate? Just asking for a friend :)

What are these their fake names? You realize names like Hellas, Croatia, Alexander, Juve etc have long since been whitewashed from Australian soccer. No need to get scared mate. Who is Team 11 or the Tasmanian team you like btw? What division do they play in?

They don't scare me, I love the game. I'm comfortable when I speak to current fans about today football or to mono ethnic ex fans, and I'm just as happy talking about wogball as well. Those NSL names scare the Ffa bud. Team 11 is the consortium's temporary name, but you know that already.

WU have boxed themselves into a corner really, as it was clear they had limited options available so they had to go with sub optimal venues to start with (Geelong and Ballarat).

I tend to think that they were looking at the Knights Stadium but the investment required to meet the requirements would be a barrier.

Whitten oval is also a fairly disappointing venue, especially if the weather isn’t good, with minimal cover. That venue will also soon be a construction site with the next stages of the grounds redevelopment now getting funding, but even when that’s finished it is not going to enhance the experience much.

I struggle to see how they will survive the next couple of years, as the only thing they can do to build any confidence is to deliver on their promised stadium development. Even getting this training venue built will allow them to use the smaller stadium if need be in the meantime.

Those NSL names haven't been used since the late 90s dude.... Your argument doesn't hold. I agree with you that this is the view of the current administrators (or more specifically the independent AL owners) but that doesn't mean it is a correct one. Setting up georgraphic broadbased "clubs" is at best hit and miss. For every Wanderers, Adelaide and Victory you have a Melbourne Heart, WU, Gold Coats and Fury....
Perfect example of what I am try to get across is Tasmania ... why develop a brand new franchise when there are 1-2 current NPL clubs that could be built upon to be part of the NSD??? Clubs with existing members base, supporters, junior and senior players both mens and womens squads.. maybe not the best facilities but at least something to start with...  Instead of pissing all that away, why not build from an existing base.... Lowy had his way with razing all previous clubs to the ground and starting again from scratch 16 years ago, I dont think Soccer could take another hit like that in this country.

Nothing stopping them using their foreign names when in the top flight league, it would prompt Gallop will come out of retirement and start swinging like Jones jr and Tyson.

Yeah we're sort of like Hellas Verona in that regard, except that the Italian Scudetto don't seem to have any fear of having a Greek named team in their first division....
Actually, Hellas is an official name of the club in Verona, here in Australia we where forced to remove any official reference to it by Hill and the Apartheid forerunners of the Westfield gang... I guess "Hellas" would be more like the Spurs' "Yid Army"  an un-official nickname that  pisses off a lot of irrelevant people?
Who do you follow BTW, just out of curiosity?

WU's upcoming training facilities are promising.
The main field could hold afew thousand to start with I believe.
The Dandenong bid didn't have a stadium eiher.
Using Casey fields is like WU using Whitten Oval.

Melbourne on the other hand should by rights
Be able to carry two football teams easily with all the football people down south.
Its just that they support their Npl teams but choose not to join the A League and support Melbourne City for instance, seeing as they are in the top flight league.

Casey fields might be a dump but i think people would have been far more comfortable with that as the temporary solution whilst waiting for a new stadium than indefinitely playing at an oval not even 15 minutes drive from Docklands in an area already strongly tapped by MV.

You mean MK had “CROATIA” plastered in big letters on front of their shirts. As for SM Hellas, you well know that Hellas is their followers preferred name.

lmao you still carry on like australian clubs are actually cool enough to play with their original names instead of ditching them nearly 30 years ago. Pretty sure South Melbourne hasn't even allowed the word Hellas to be uttered since the 90's.
