Moss: "Eagerly anticipating our next tilt at Asia"

Friday, 18 May 2012 9:03 AM

THE ACL experience may have come to an end in Nagoya on Tuesday night, but there is not doubt the Central Coast Mariners have left their mark in Asia.

From China to Korea, and finally the real powerhouse of Asia Japan, we played a brand of football that with a little more luck in front of goal had all the ingredients of being successful in this part of the world’s equivalent to the European Champions League.

Coach Graham Arnold’s experience in Asia through his involvement with the Socceroos proved invaluable and the players equipped themselves very well against teams that have an annual playing budget of between $30-60 million.

It seems a long way off right now but everyone at the Club is eagerly anticipating our next tilt at Asia at the end of next season.

We ended Tuesday’s game with five 19-20-year-olds on the pitch while our experienced players led by example.

Down 2-0 at half-time we came out of the blocks well after the break and had three great chances to score and put pressure on a Nagoya outfit that boasted several senior Japanese internationals.

The scoreline of 3-0 flattered Nagoya if you take into account the fact we virtually gifted them their goals.
When you make a mistake against top quality international opposition you invariably get punished.

At the other end of the pitch you simply have to take your chances.

The result does not in any way take away from what has been an outstanding season by the lads.

We won the Premier’s Plate – the pinnacle in any player and coaches mind – were one penalty off a back-to-back Grand Final appearance against Brisbane and one win away from the last 16 of the Asian Champions League.

We are the smallest Club in Asia by a fair way but continue to punch way above our weight.

It’s a credit to everyone at the Club on and off the field and hopefully we have given our loyal supporters something to cheer about this season.

Academy Girls shine in wet conditions
Monday, 4 June 2012 8:02 AM

With rain through Saturday, Saturday night and Sunday morning over the past weekend, Sunday’s away games at Concord Oval for the Girls and Womens Central Coast Mariners Academy Premier League Teams were always in doubt of proceeding.

Fortunately, Concord Oval was declared open on Sunday morning allowing Interlions to host the Coast’s Girls Teams for Round 11 of the 2012 Women’s Premier League Season.

An early 9am start for the Grade 12 girls saw them tear out of the blocks with a 3-0 win over Interlions. Goals were shared between Hannah Batten, Aimy Long and Jessica Grassi. Full marks also to young keeper Adina Hawkins who, along with a strong defensive outfit on the field, kept a clean sheet for the day.

The Grade 14 Girls followed in similar fashion with a 2-0 win with goals to both Courtney Smith and Beth Le Gay Brereton. Another win for the Grade 14 Girls clearly demonstrates their improved results as the season continues.

The Grade 16 Girls continued their fine form with a 2-1 win over Interlions. The win seems them further cement their second place standing on the ladder just behind ladder leaders Illawarra Stingrays.

With weather and field conditions deteriorating throughout the day, officials were left with the unenviable task of having to wash out the remaining two games of the day – Womens Reserve Grade and Womens First Grade. These games will be rescheduled and played at a later date when it is hoped the Coast Senior Women's Teams can emulate the winning ways of the younger girls teams from Sunday.

Saturday saw the Mariners Academy Boys teams head to the home of Sydney University, Hensley Athletic Field to play Round 11 of the Football NSW Super Youth League 2012 Season. Round 11 marks the half way point of the boys season.

With threatening skies, the Coast’s Boys teams were glad to be playing at one of the premier synthetic, all weather fields in the Sydney region knowing that there was no chance that their games would be washed out.

Round 11 was always going to be a tough assignment for the Academy Boys teams with Sydney University breathing down their necks in second place on the Club Championship chasing the Academy’s well earned lead.

The day saw the Academy teams suffer two losses with the Grade 13 and Grade 15 boys both going down 1-0 to their Sydney University counterparts.

Draws were recorded in both the Grade 14 and Grade 16 Boys teams. A draw in the Boys 16s sees their undefeated 2012 season continue with a total now of 9 wins and 2 draws.

It was the final game of the day that saw the Academy steal the points with a goal for Luke Vandenberg to secure a 1-0 win over Sydney University in the Grade 18 Boys.

It is another busy week ahead for all the Academy teams. This Wednesday night sees the Womens First Grade team travel to Sydney to play the NSW Institute of Sport Womens team. Next weekend sees the Girls and Womens teams at Pluim Park on Sunday against Illawarra Stingrays. The Grade 9, 10, 11 and 12 Boys teams welcome Western NSW Mariners to Pluim on Monday of the June long weekend. The Boys Grade 13 to 18 teams have two away games on the long weekend, travelling to Dulwich Hill on Saturday and Bankstown Berries on Monday.

Mariners maestro McGlinchey competing in Solomon Islands

Wednesday, 6 June 2012 4:03 PM

Central Coast Mariners midfield maestro Michael McGlinchey is currently in the Solomon Islands competing for the New Zealand All Whites at the OFC Nations Cup.

McGlinchey played full matches in the Kiwi’s first two Group B matches of the tournament to decide Oceania’s best side, and which four teams will advance to Round Three of FIFA World Cup Qualifying.

Round 3 of Oceania FIFA World Cup Qualifying is foreseen to take place in the period from 7 September 2012 to 26 March 2013, with the winner advancing to an intercontinental play-off.

On Saturday, McGlinchey’s New Zealand side won 1-0 against Fiji at the Lawson Tama Stadium in Honiara.

Two days later, McGlinchey again played 90 minutes as the All Whites defeated Frank Farina’s Papua New Guinea outfit 2-1 at the same Stadium.

Today, McGlinchey was absent from Ricki Herbert’s second-string team that drew 1-1 with hosts Solomon Islands.

Despite the draw, New Zealand topped Group B and will now face New Caledonia in the semi-finals of the OFC Nations Cup on Friday.

Should the All Whites defeat Les Cagous in Friday’s meeting, Herbert’s team will challenge either Tahiti or Solomon Islands in Sunday’s OFC Nations Cup Final, giving McGlinchey the opportunity to bring a piece of international silverware back home to the Central Coast.

Academy teams continue to excel

Monday, 25 June 2012 11:15 AM

All Central Coast Mariners Academy Competition Teams were home at Pluim Park over the weekend and continue to perform well against their Sydney counterparts.

On Saturday, the Boys Academy Super Youth League Teams were unbeatable in their five games across all age groups. The Mounties Wanderers made the trek to the Coast but left without a win.

The Grade 13 Boys secured a 2-0 win with goals to Max Fabila in the 14th minute and Michael Glassock in the 59th minute. Keepers Kane Runge and Alex Jorgenson were both able to keep clean sheets and the Mounties scoreless in game 1 of the day.

The Grade 14 and Grade 15 Academy boys teams both recorded 1-1 draws with goals to Trent Buhagiar in the 14 Boys and Matt Bennett in the 15 Boys.

The Grade 16 Boys continued their unbeaten season with a 3 nil win over Mounties. Coach Steve Finch's boys sit clearly on top of the ladder although still have two games in hand on a number of teams in their competition. Saturday's goals were shared between Philip Holmes (2) and Ryan Frame (1). Jacob Wesson, backed up by the 16s strong defensive line and back up keeper Jack O'Malley from the 15s, were able to keep the Mounties scoreless in the game. The 3 nil win reinforces the team's strong defence with only 4 goals being scored against them in 13 games.

The Grade 18 Boys fought a physical game Boys against their Mounties counterparts with the end result a 2 all draw. The Academy's goals were scored by Jordan Molnar and Stuart Adams who will be hoping to add to their tally on Tuesday night when the Grade 18 Boys head to Sydney to play second placed team, the New South Wales Institute of Sport. The Academy 18 Boys currently sit in fifth position on a very crowded top end of the table. With two games in hand, the Academy team sit 7 points behind NSWIS who are just one point behind Western NSW Mariners.

Although conditions were frosting to begin with on Sunday, the Academy's girls teams warmly welcomed their competition, Blacktown Spartans, to Pluim Park and another full day of competition.

The Academy girls opened the scoring with a goal to Chelsea Searle. However, the Spartans quickly fought back with a goal immediately as the play started again. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Grade 14 Girls Academy knew they had a tough challenge ahead against the Grade 14 girls from Blacktown who have suffered only 1 loss in their 14 games and sit top of the ladder. The Academy girls did well keeping Blacktown to just one goal but were unable to put away an equaliser. The game finished 1-0 in Blacktown's favour.

The Grade 16 girls Central Coast Academy girls continue to show why they are top of the table. Although the girls still have a game in hand on most other teams, their 2012 form of 10 wins and a draw in 13 games has then sitting clear at the top ahead of the Illawarra Stingrays and Manly United. Sunday's 1-0 win was achieved through a goal from Emily Young, a clean sheet to fill-in keeper Tahlor Thackray and a great all round performance from all of the team.

The weekend's positive results were also reflected in the First and Reserve Grade Women's Teams. The Reserve Grade team had a convincing 4-2 win whilst the First Grade team followed with a 3-1 wins that puts them in ninth on the ladder but with two games in hand on most teams. Goals in the First Grade game were shared between Miranda Walker (26th and 61st minute) and Briony Holcombe (77th minute). A full report on the Women's First Grade Premier League matches can be found at the Football NSW website

Next weekend, all Boys Super Youth Teams and the Women's Premier League Teams are away with the boys travelling to Christie Park on Saturday to play Spirit FC and the Girls to Harrie Denning Centre on Sunday to play Sutherland. The younger boys teams - 9, 10, 11s and 12s will be home on Saturday 30th June hosting Easts in the Boys Skills Acquisition Program whilst on Sunday the 11s and 12s travel to Christie Park to play Gladesville Hornsby.

Academy Girls progress to final four of Cheryl Salisbury Cup

Wednesday, 11 July 2012 4:00 PM

The Central Coast Mariners Academy 12 Girls team are through to the semi-finals of the 2012 Cheryl Salisbury Cup being played at Valentine Sports Park this week.

The Girls have been competing in the Cup since Tuesday and had played both Northbridge FC and Parramatta Lady Hawks to progress through to the quarter-final.

The quarter-final saw them matched up against their Sydney University counterparts. Rebecca Peake scored for the Academy but this was also matched with an own goal from the team to level scores at 1 all at full-time. A penalty shoot-out was necessary to decide the winner and who would progress through to Thursday’s semi-final.

The Mariners Academy Girls dominated the penalty shoot-out with goals to Brittni Nicol, Rebecca Peake and goalkeeper Adina Hawkins. Hawkins skills in front of the goal also prevented Sydney University from scoring with the final result of the penalty shoot-out being 3 nil to the Academy Girls.

Thursday’s semi-final for the Academy Girls will be between either Manly United FC or Western NSW Mariners depending upon the result of their Wednesday game. Kick off for the semi-final is 10am with the Grand Final kicking off at 1pm. All games are being played at Football NSW Headquarters, Valentine Sports Park, Glenwood.

When Wilko was injured at the start of the season and Hutch was in China, Zwaanswijk had the armband. Hutch is officially our vice-captain though. It'll be either of those two.

Ye thats what I would have thought. Bojic would be more of an outside candidate just because he's been with the Mariners for ages.

Whilst I love Pedj - Im not sure he demonstrates the qualities of a strong leader that you want in your man wearing the arm band.

I agree with PZ being the prime candidate.

But a smokey could be Oliver Bozanic - he has captained the young socceroos.

ARNIE = LEGEND !

Pre-season matches to begin in August

Thursday, 26 July 2012 11:25 AM

CENTRAL Coast Mariners will face no less than four Hyundai A-League opponents in the lead up to their season 8 opener against Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday 6 October.

Matches against Hyundai A-League rivals Adelaide United, Melbourne Victory, Brisbane Roar and Sydney FC will form a key part of the Mariners pre-season campaign, which also includes clashes with numerous semi-professional outfits.

Graham Arnold’s men will commence their run of pre-season dates on Tuesday 21 August against Spirit FC at Christie Park, North Ryde.

A friendly game against a Central Coast Football Select will follow just two days later at Pluim Park, Lisarow, giving local footballers the opportunity to show their ability against the reigning Hyundai A-League Premiers.

Arnold said the match against the Central Coast Football Select would give him the chance to assess the level of the regions best players.

“The local boys are always keen to perform at their best when they get the chance to play the Mariners so we will be expecting a tough hit-out against them.”

“It is not so long ago that the club unearthed Matty Simon from the local ranks, so we are keen to see the ability of the Coast’s best players and use the match to improve where we are at,” he said.

The annual Doug Turnbull Cup between the yellow and navy and Bankstown City – played in memory of Central Coast Mariners Chairman, Mr Peter Turnbull’s late brother – will be held on Wednesday 29 August in Sefton.

Central Coast will ramp-up their pre-season campaign with a minimum of six games in September, four of which will be played against Hyundai A-League opposition.

“September will be a key month for the team,” Arnold said. “Adelaide United, Melbourne Victory, Sydney FC and Brisbane Roar will each provide a different test for us.”

“Results will not be a concern for us throughout the pre-season. You can’t win an A-League title in August or September, but it is possible to damage your chances to win one.”
