First you defund the operation of the welfare system to the extent that it's near impossible to communicate with, then pump money into recoveries to take money from people who gave up on spending 3 hours in a centrelink phone queue to report their changed circumstances.

After getting frustrated with being handed a senate paper that is twice as wide as the booth I was expected to place it in to vote and having somewhere to be, today I voted above the line for the first time since I've been a voter.

I did early voting yesterday.

I purposely informal voted the green slip (for any Community fans out there, I voted for South Park), and I did 1-6 above the line on the Senate sheet (Pirate Party, Science Party, PUP, Derryn Hinch, and I can't remember the other 2 but they seemed pretty insignificant). Mrs v4 accidentally informal voted the Senate & echoed the views of many I've heard that 1-6 above the line is silly, confusing for those not heavily interested in politics & not worth the hassle.

Seems like the polls point to a relatively comfortable Lib victory - reduced majority, but unlikely to be a hung parliament.

Senate looks to be the most interesting, given the quotas have halved, and the new voting system.

Out of interest, how did Mrs v4 vote informally in the Senate?

Did she just do a 1 above the line? Because if so, that vote will still be counted. The "6 above the line" is a suggestion, not a requirement to be formal.

Its just that the vote will be exhausted immediately.

I think she just got confused and flustered with all the parties and ended up just giving up. I think she scribbled all over it in the end. She wasn't super chatty about it tbh, but yeah she informalled for sure.

labour need a systematic error in the polls of about 2% which is about a 1 in 6 shot
there is also a 1 in 6 shot for a landslide coalition victory with a systematic error in the polls going the other way
