Just going to say this about how The Force Awakens has been viewed.

People have hated Star Wars ever since the OT. The prequels have just made everyone forget about it.

Back in the 80's it was a huge point of discussion having to outline why ROTJ was even worth watching and not ignoring back in the mid-80's.

Heck; there were folks who hated it so much that they were willing to ignore ESB and just watch ANH only just to avoid that "bastard child" ROTJ.

When ESB was released lots of people were grumbling. There was quite a backlash against it to begin with, infact some early reviews of RoTJ saying Lucas had got Star Wars back on track after the 'miss' that was ESB. It is now considered one of the best movies of all time.

Star Wars The Force Awakens is a very good movie that most people really enjoy and i do think the loud minority will not be remembered in times passage. Not that i'm against anyone not liking the movie, it's just that after the sequel trilogy is all released i think it will by far be considered the best set of Star Wars movies.

The fact TFA is being so overwhelmingly praised already is in itself a miracle due to the rabid fanbase.

ESB is probably my least favourite out of all 7... I dunno why, but I just feel like not a lot happens in it. There's Hoth, then Luke loses his hand.... I'd JarJar and Darth Maul over it any day.

entertainment that ages well are usually well written highly original pieces that sometimes contrast with the fashion of the day
The original star wars is almost unique in the sci fi genre even to this day in that is idealistic sci-fi despite including a fascistic empire (the worlds and aliens are aesthetically appealing rather than feeling alien like most sci fi) also it didnt bother trying to explain its sci fi elements and it combined fantasy with sci fi in a way that is fairly unique
Lord of the rings was highly original when the book was released and went against fashion since it was idealized the past when modernism was near its peak.
Books and movies that age poorly are unoriginal, conform to fashion and rely on special effects

no prizes for guessing what category I think this star was fits into
I rate it below the prequels since they at least tried to do something new

For a movie you dislike so much you sure do talk about it quite a bit.
The prequels were utter shit, 3rd one being the less shit, tried to do something new and failed on so many levels.

Trying something different for the sake of trying something different is irrelevant when that something different is fucking garbage and done so poorly.

Give me a great retread of IV over the shit that was the prequels anytime.

I liked that this film uses less special effects or high octane fight sequences and goes with the whole swashbuckling Cowboys v Indians type scenario. This will appeal to a new generation of fans.

Modern action films, especially superhero movies bore me with the ridiculous OTT special effects and fight sequences.

I think the next film will be more dark.

I've always viewed the prequels as a mixed bag. If you dig past the negatives ie jerky dialogue, overuse of CGI, Jar Jar Binks etc, there is plenty to like. Ewan McGregor and Ian McDiarmid are fantastic as Obi Wan, and Palpatine respectively. Some of the worlds ie: Coruscant are incredibly imaginative and many of the ideas such as the pod racing, droid armies, the politics of the republic are fascinating IMO. And who can forget John Williams' piece for the Darth Maul light-saber dual?

Overall far from great film-making but as a star wars fan i think there is a lot of things to appreciate. Episode VII can't really be compared to the prequels as it is trying to do something entirely different, in that it pays homage to the A New Hope first and foremost, whilst setting up the new characters for the next two films.

As a lifelong Star Wars fan, on first viewing I was slightly disappointed. On reflection, my expectations were probably far to high (plus the marketing for this movie is unprecedented), but can 100% confirm the second viewing is far more satisfying and thoroughly enjoyable. Can't wait to see what's coming next.

They could afford to build a new Death Star but not a viable new suit for the second most powerful man in the galaxy?

He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

Took my son to the starwars 7 on the opening night. He had only watched Episode 4 the lego series and clone wars before this, so he had some understanding of it. He came out of the movie completly obsessed with it and Kylo Ren. Wont stop talking about it.

So in the boxing day sales I grabbed the complete saga blueray set. We have now watched ep 1 + 2 + 3. Of course he loved them, but I had only ever seen them all once at the cinemas never again. Yes they are not the best movies but it was really interesting to see the backstory again. The guy that plays palaptine was fantastic especially in ep3. I must say that over the years the internet trashing of these films skewed my recollection of them, but on rewatching them I did enjoy them all over again.

finally when and saw it. Loved it.

Just one thing that annoys me is how bad these storm troopers are at shooting when it comes to shooting at the main characters.

Thing is this happens in every action movie. The only difference with starwars is you can see the "bullets"

Can you imagine what a normal action movie would look like with lasers instead????

Good guys can nail a shot from any distance.

Troopers with an easy shot trained from a young age. Clear miss. Lift your game

All in all good movie. Loved how Rey came to grips with the force. Ky-Lo loved that character so torn but so much anger. Look forward to the next one.

I liked that, it showcased his insecurity and how he felt like he needed to put on a mask to be intimidating, but when he was alone he was emotionally weak and unstable. Gave him far more range/depth than Vader in IV/V

Edit: It basically made him an actual character rather than a plot device

This. Made him a much more layered character. Would have been much more boring as a character if he'd kept the mask on and would have led to even more complaints about how he's just a rip off of Darth Vader.

Yep agree. Also he is at such a younger age than Vader in the originals. He should be unsure of himself. I imaging his age is similar to (maybe a little younger) that of Anakin in Episode 3.

I reckon he was a great character, and the ending with Snoke realising Luke would be receiving a new padawan and being forced to finish Kylo's training means we will probably see a darker more complete villain in the next movie which should be pretty cool.

I think I should see this a second time. Agree with points about Kylo. Can ultimately see him going to the light side in the end similar to vader did. But that's my guess.

iirc Kylo is around 30-31 making him 10 years or so older than Rey which would rule out any twins theory.

Read an interview from JJ about his thoughts on the movies success and why he chose not to do episode 8.
The main reason was the two movie schedules were filmed too close together, but interestingly the director of episode 8 had worked closley with the team for ep 7 and got them to add elements he will need for his movie.

I suppose thats the benefit of filming them so closely together.

Review is over 30 minutes, but it's a great watch and it perfectely explains why the criticism The force awakens is getting for being too similar is unfounded.
