Further to this you could see mutually beneficial sponsorship as is/was seen in Sheffield where VW sponsored both teams.
In some ways it could be more beneficial and lead to a greater level of stability for both clubs than if just one club were introduced.

An interesting thing to consider is whether having two teams in the state would actually reduce interest in the League because of the passion that the Tassie shirt brings out. Having two teams might just take the level of interest back to that of the AFL state competition down here. As an example I expect that quite a few fans from the north west would come to a Tasmania United game in Launceston but I wouldn't expect many at all to come to a Launceston Gunners game. Maybe when the state's population is another 200k larger things might be different. Thanks for the response. My thinking was it saves on the North/south divide. Also could from the start start a rivalry that could grow quickly and benefit both clubs. I agree that it would be unlikely, and that the passion for a united tassie side would probably be greater. Out of interest would you see many make the trip either north or south for games in the other city? E.g. if they play game alternately between Hobart and Launceston, would you get many travel to watch the games each week? That is a very difficult question to answer. Traveling north or south to a game would be greatly influenced by the time of the game and what other sporting events might be on at the same time. I personally would only make the trip for big games which for me means not Heart, Wellington Perth, Adelaide or Newcastle. Friday night and late Sunday afternoon for instance would be a no no although Sunday afternoon showed up as the preferred time in the research done by EMRS. The Tasmania United Business Case did address the likelihood of people buying membership for all games and the response was quite low with people preferring to buy memberships for their own half of the state. Tasmania United was talking about running buses but I don't know how effective this would be but I could imagine a good time being had by all on the 2.5 hour bus trip home. I'll check out the Business Plan and see if this issue was addressed in the research.

There is a big rivalry between Launceston and Hobart but insufficient population and corporate activity to fund a team in the north.

I believe there was a very short period when there was both a Lonnie and Hobart in the NBL - a very short period.

Launceston Casino Tigers operated from 1980 to the 82 season before folding but won the NBL in 1981. Hobart Devils came into the NBL in 1983 and folded in about 1996 from memory. Both teams failed due to getting into financial difficulty.

I was told when I was in Launceston that Cascade doesn't sell in the north, and Boag's doesn't in the south; just another iteration of the rivalry that could be capitalised on. Of course, there already was a Cascades FC.

The only problem is the FFA won't allow them to use James Boags as a sponsor due to that 'be the influence' shit. Thanks man. Who says whatever form the A2 eventually takes has to follow the "be the influence" shit? Obviously thinking a few light years ahead than practical here. Edited by paladisious: 14/1/2013 05:02:41 PM

The Hobart kit is just the Tasmania XI kit from the friendly against Victory this pre-season with the Hobart Coat of Arms as a logo like Bristol City. The Northern Rangers kit and logo is derived from the Launceston City logo, featuring a Tasmanian Tiger. All the sponsors are just my conjecture of course.

Northern Rangers already exists and is one of the teams in the new statewide league. I might have a look at a few games next year because the other northern club Launceston City play only a stones throw from my place. I gave up going when I got tired of the poor standard and when my son and his mates weren't in the teams to get me over the poor standard bit. :)

i feel that due to geographics and stadia, tasmania has fallen behind in the expansion race, and it may possibly be a better decision to create both a new hobart and launceston clubs to compete in the A2 or the tasmanian league, with the view that once one of them develops, they can be in the a-league in the future

As for the bushfires, last I heard they were in the country towns, not the centre of Launceston. For a top of the table clash, with high media coverage and in perfect weather = NOT GOOD ENOUGH

You have to wonder at the potential for extra teams in sydney at some point.
April 25, 2007 Sydney FC 3–0 Persik Kediri Parramatta Stadium, Sydney, Australia Attendance: 10,075

Add about 15k this game Sydney could support as many as 6 teams (CBD, North Shore, Shire, Parra, Penrith, South West) imo but not for a while Edited by redshirtwilly: 9/2/2013 08:51:38 PM

the sydney fc marketing team did their best to ensure sydney was a one club city.

If I had it my way I would wait until 2016 which is the year before our next tv deal to expand. I would bring in Tasmania and South Coast/Wollongong. I would have a few NYL teams as well.

The major point about the region is that it is marked as one of the two major growth areas for Sydney and will grow by about 15k a year for the next 25 years and have a population slightly less than Adelaide currently is by 2036. Its quite conceivable that there could be 20-25k juniors playing there by that time.

I'm not sure if there's still a place for Northern Spirit, being in between Sydney FC and the Mariners both geographically and in being Sydney's "new football" option.
Still, photoshop is fun.
