Nah they built multi=purpose venues back when soccer wasn't a sport in Australia. We have a soccer pitch in the small town I live in that's been there for 20 so years. It's called La fiamma soccer club, been there for 20+ years, has beautful pitch, beatiful upstairs function centre, change rooms under neath the stands, serves alcohol and would you believe? would convert easily into a pretty nice looking stadium by just adding 3 other stands on left right and opposite stand side. It's already there would you believe. Edited by highkick05: 4/5/2015 11:51:37 AM

My opinion. Soccer needs separate stadium not a multi-sport. Multi-Sport would always be larger stadium , AFL can use it, Rugby can use it, olympic sports can use it.
Soccer needs rectangle with higher seat angles . It's not the typical stadium , you couldn't just make an any old stadium for it. Yeah and that photo shows a 65k seat stadium which would probably look very much like suncorp. higher seat angles etc. I just don't agree with the 65k seater in size. I think they should knock the current one down and rebuild it into a 50k seater with a full roof. Steeper seating etc and be prime for football and league, rugby. The State government want the economic benefit of having these games near the city. 84k is too big anyway. The government is a bit stuck - they want to move big events back to the city or parramatta, closer to other amenities. This is sensible, and it's what we all want. However for that to work you need a rectangular stadium roughly 65k capacity otherwise you lose major events to Etihad stadium in Melbourne.
Most of the rest of the year that size stadium is too big for one team.

Didn't the article say that another $100m will be spent on the current Allianz site once that's been demolished, for another multi-sport venue? That could be another 10-15k rectangular venue!
As for the cash being spent, a 65k capacity Allianz with connecting light rail transport and a 35k-40k stadium at Parramatta is a win-win for football I reckon. Yes 65k is a big venue, but if it's right on top of the pitch, even 15-20k would look and sound amazing. Hopefully Sydney FC keep growing, and the new stadium actually helps entice more people to games.
Melbourne needs something like this, a second rectangular venue. AAMI Park is not only getting too small, but it hosts all of A-league, NRL and Super Rugby. A second venue needs to be thought about now.

They should just upgrade Parramatta and thats it. The rest is a massive waste of tax payers money. I think ANZ stadium owners want it to become a block of flats and thats why they have influenced people to come up with this.

FFS Sydney sort out your public transport before you build these tax money vacuums. People aren't avoiding sport because the Stadium isn't shiny enough it's because a ticket to the stadium costs half the admission and parking is even worse than 20km/h labyrinth drives!

The impending annexation of the durka dome by the AFL and MV's current lease expiring when they take over means this is going to become a issue sooner rather than later. The only way that we'll get a second venue though is if we join forces with League and Union and sell the idea to the State Government of Melbourne getting more Major Events. The Rebels are bleeding cash and just as likely to fold in 5 years, the Storm aren't going to get any bigger and City is a farce so MV ground sharing with someone is out. If we proposed a new 40-50k stadium then we would need a lot more events than 13-18 MV home games to justify Government expenditure. Realistically we could propose hosting the following: 1 State of Origin (every 3 years) 1-2 Union Internationals 1 League International At least 2 Football Internationals At least 2 Major Football Friendlies They would really need to hammer the point that the prospect of a AFL owned Docklands and not having a dedicated Rectangular venue will harm Melbourne's chances of hosting these events

They aren't building for today, they are building for 20-35 years down the track, it's a once in a generation project.

Another interesting thing is how Sydney 2000's venues have lasted this long after the Olympics
Look at whats happened to Athens 2004 or even Beijing 2008. The Olympics are more or less a waste of time, space and money, especially when there is very little contingency as to what happens to the venues after a 2 week event finishes
