If you go back far enough it was the catholics (irish & Italian) who were regarded as a threat because they weren't "loyal" to Australia - they were slaves of the Pope. Sound familiar?

People also seem to forget that the biggest victims of ISIS are muslims.

The other issue is the astounding superficiality of people blaming islam for all the violence that occurs. If you have even a basic understanding of the middle east, you would see that religion is but one ingredient of the witch's brew that makes up the geo-politics of that area.

I would argue that fundamentalist islam is actually a symptom, not the cause, of the problems of the middle east.

I live in Melbourne, in a neighbourhood with plenty of turks, Lebanese, Italians, greeks, anglo-hipsters. Everyone is well and truly 'assimilated'.

I also think we need to separate how much particular issues get aired in the media vs their actual occurrence.

At the end of the day crack down on Religious hate preachers , Far Right Movements , Lefty Communists and I'll be happy.

In other words. "Please be like me".

And that, folks, is the very definition of what Australians think "assimilate" should mean.

Agree with all of this. I don't mean to single him out specifically (it's not the first time I've read this line of argument) but you get arguments like what Stifler's Mom posted and it won't change their opinion.

I look forward to the next one of these "muslim's hate westerners so we should kick them out/not let them in" threads where all the same shit gets posted again.

Canberra maybe?

The "multicultural" experience varies depending on what city you are in.

Not too many radical Moslem clerics or orthodox Jews in Gundagai or Mareeba.

Canberra is pretty white. Not sure about Adelaide though. Sydney is a completely different story all together.

 I just saw this post (been enjoying my holidays too much). There's no "lakemba" in Adelaide for sure but there's plenty of diversity here. I've spent a lot of time in Brisbane and I reckon it's less diverse.

I think a true test of your beliefs would be if something hit close to home by the crazies we have been talking about.
By the sounds of it, it seems you haven't experienced living in an area which highlights the issues been discussed...so don't you find it a bit sanctimonious in saying what others should and shouldn't feel when you don't see things on a day to day basis. I live in Sydney (where some of these issues exist) and have all my life, and you live in Adelaide (where you say theres no lakemba or anything like it) , correct? So what makes you think you have an insight of what goes on.

Im not saying majority of muslims are bad...in fact they are well integrated...but as you've mentioned in your previous...its quite acceptable in your world to have a few hate preachers around sprouting their shit as long as they are in the minority...yet you think I come across as non-sensical.

What does it say about you that the only bloke who agrees with you is 433. A 17 year old high school student that wouldn't know his arse from his elbow.

Think about that.

I also notice you failed to address the argument. No surprise when you have no clue I guess.

Are you having a go at me? I can't tell.

But yes I can empathise with his family. Terrible stuff.

The definition was more there for SocaWho benefit who seems to find it difficult to think that you could feel sorry or understand how they're feeling if they're someone you've never met.

Before you go off, not once in this entire thread have I stated a for or against position on Muslim immigration.

I simply pointed out the idiocy and hypocrisy of 433 and SocaWho with regards to mosques and the heinous crime of leaving a room when song is played due to a religious obligation.

'Assimilate' is one of those terms that will eventually, if not already, be tossed into the "racist, divisive language" basket with other words like Australianise and Team Australia. The idea that people who comes here through either invitation or humanitarian channels ought to make an effort to learn the language, understand the values and try to fit into mainstream culture is so horrific to some that it is considered just another form of cultural genocide and Western Imperialism. Hence they are encouraged to retain their minority status, loath western values and reject the idea of joining the broader society, instead we are expected to adapt to their values and customs and of course this creates an "us v them" mentality which manifests in racist outbursts like the Cronulla Riots, Australian Defence Leauge and on the other side religious extremists.

IMO people who come here must accept and embrace Australian values or be refused entry, even if they are a misfortunate poor refugee. But because the left have watered down and constantly put down out own values, and replaced it with the core value or ingratiating and acquiescing to minorities, we are seeing increased tension between multicultural Australia (specifically Islam ) and broader Australia, because they each treat others values and culture as inferior.

Lol, the Australian Defence League. I was Ralph Cerminara's commander at one point and in 20 years in the army I never saw a soldier who was beaten up so often, so easily, by so many and for so many different reasons. That dickhead could walk into a room with 100 people and within 5 minutes 99 of them would have to be restrained from attacking him and each would have a different reason.

His last year in the army he had to be supervised constantly for his own protection and then he gets busted on ANZMI.net for pretending he was in Afghanistan, Iraq and Timor. We couldn't even let him out of the office.

Wasn't this the same guy who did a YouTube clip of himself in his own bedroom and midway through the video theres a driveby shooting and he's diving for the floor?

That was one of his lackey's, and I have absolutely no evidence for this whatsoever, but knowing that shithead was involved I am certain that it was staged.

The ill ride with you campaign wasn't about empathy, it was a bizarre freak show whereby people suddenly felt the need to ingratiate themselves and profess their loving tolerance to Muslims and hijab wearers in response to the Martin Place siege, publicly announcing they would ride on the same mode of transport as a Muslims. Wow. It was truly sickening

empathy
ˈɛmpəθi

noun
the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

Fuck me. I'm not arguing any of tha Russ.

SocaWho pooh-poohed McJules ability to feel something for someone he never met.

I threw up the empathy definition because obviously someone who went to school on the special bus has not come across this simple word before.

It was like something out of a fictional novel...the person who made the hashtag (if I'm mistaken) first claimed to comfort the passenger with the hijab and engage in dialogue...only to admit she lied and fabricated the sequence of events in her own mind whilst watching the passenger the whole time without engaging in any dialogue.

But what would you say to Curtis Cheng's family in regards to the issue of extremism?...I'd be interested to hear....

Yeah, like riding on the bus or train of someone wearing a hijab or whatever is like some grand gesture of tolerance and acceptance.

AKA self validation...its the thought that counts.

Absolutely right, self validation and ostentatious public displays of morality was the primary motivating force behind it.

Around the same time that fringe Test Cricketer died. I was tempted to open a gunshop in Lakemba, a florist at Martin Place and direct the looneys to Shane Watsons house. Would have made a killing.

Just out of interest does the #batsout (or whatever it was) for Phillip Hughes thing meet this definition?

The Left are a weird lot...you have the real victims (who were shot in Martin Place) whose families are mourning them, yet you have the Left feeling sorry for a lady from a fictional scenario of a hashtag sentiment that was dreamt up by someone with a self validating imagination...yet McJules talks straw man arguments.

Genuine question - those bagging the hashtag campaigns, how does it relate to the broader question?

My 2 cents is - there were probably people doing it for genuine reasons. But of course people jumped all over it for social media brownie points, that happens for everything....

Remember #Kony2012 ???
