NSW Treasurer reins in stadium spending NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet. Picture: AAPNSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet is set to put up a substantial roadblock to Sports Minister Stuart Ayres’ plans to rebuild two major stadiums in Sydney — starting with Allianz Stadium at Moore Park — with the Treasurer understood to be insisting total stadium spending stay at $1.6 billion. It is understood Mr Perrottet has also cast doubt on Mr Ayres’ ambitious plans to start work on Allianz Stadium in 2018 and rebuild ANZ Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park, starting in 2019 — effectively rebuilding the stadiums at the same time — saying such a plan could provide “cashflow” problems for the government. On a visit to Japan in August, Premier Gladys Berejiklian said she wanted to build both stadiums and would not rule out a start to Allianz Stadium before the March 2019 election. Mr Ayres will present a plan by the end of the month to cabinet, which has leaked and includes a plan to build Allianz first, followed by ANZ, with NRL grand finals at the SCG during the overlap of construction. But Mr Perrottet is understood to be steadfast in saying the government should spend only $1.6bn — which includes $300 million already spent on Parramatta Stadium — or as “close as possible” to that figure. The costs of substantial rebuilds of Allianz and ANZ have been put at as much as $1.8bn — with a potential $1.2bn required for ANZ and $600m for Allianz. The two-year stadium saga has also turned into something of a battle between the NRL and the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust. The trust, backed by Mr Ayres, has lobbied furiously for an Allianz rebuild and is supported by Allianz tenants the Sydney City Roosters, Sydney FC and the Waratahs. Last week The Australian revealed those tenants and the Australian Rugby Union had written to Ms Berejiklian urging her to get on with the Allianz upgrade. The NRL, Football Federation Australia and selected rugby league club chiefs wrote to Ms Berejiklian late last month, urging ANZ to be the priority. That letter said: “As you would remember, when the $1.6bn stadia funding allocation was announced in April 2016, the two dominant sporting code administrations in western Sydney, the NRL and FFA, were unanimous in their moral and commercial support for a major redevelopment of ANZ Stadium into a rectangular configuration — an endorsement matched by an unambiguous decision by the NSW cabinet to prioritise this important project (and applauded by our respective regional organisations.) “This commitment, which included the NRL Centres of Excellence Fund and the long-term content agreements with the NRL and FFA, still has our full support as being in the very best interests of all stakeholders, the broader sporting public and the people of NSW. “The NRL’s and FFA’s content commitments are based on the understanding that the proposed investment in ANZ would see construction commence by March 2019 on the best rectangular stadium in the country with every seat closer to the action. “ Mr Perrottet said in a statement yesterday: “The Treasurer remains committed to the upgrades being delivered within the best possible time frames and budget.” NSW Treasurer reins in stadium spending

NRL grand final to be played at SCG? Really?
I'd prefer to see Moore Paek done first but really doesn't matter that much as long as both get done.

It's so blatant how the Trust is manipulating the media. Seems every time you read a new article the price tag on the Olympic Stadium has increased. From 700 million to 1.2 billion, all of it bullshit pedaled by the Trust.

Why cant a similar size stadium or just slightly bigger 40k be re-built at Allianz for 200 - 400 million. There is more than enough in this budget to build all 3 stadiums. Another opportunity like this wont exist for a very long time. There is no point building a proposed 60-70k stadium, it just makes no sense. The premium stadium that should be built is in Homebush.

While that is welcome, 7000 people an hour isn't a lot when you're trying to shuffle 30-40,000 people. but then again, they rarely get those types of crowds there.

- The SCG/SFS trust wants a bigger stadium to lure major events back from Homebush. It’s reallly as simple as that. I think that will be a complete disaster without improved access and transport links. When they were told they couldn’t have it, they downgraded it to a rebuild of the SFS.
- You won’t get a 40,000 seater in Sydney for any less than half a billion - it’s the NSW tax. The 30,000 seater at Parramatta will cost $300million on current estimates, and that’s without cost blowouts.
- NRL grand finals were played at the SCG until the SFS was built, so that’s actually not a big deal. Also, Brisbane could take the final for a year.
- To answer the above question about land - there’s no vacant land near any inner city railway station that the government currently owns. (The SCG trust was originally proposing that the new stadium be built on trust land or Moore Park West so that it would be slightly closer to central station.)
The state government would have to buy up exhorbitantly priced land and knock stuff down. That won’t happen the way Sydney property prices are.
- In a way I’m glad the treasurer is finally pushing back on costs, although it’s a bit ironic that Westconnex seems to still be a Blank cheque.

Ben Horne & Tom Smithies, The Daily Telegraph SYDNEY risks losing the NRL grand final if the State Government bows to a stunning move from the AFL to hijack plans for transforming ANZ Stadium. The Daily Telegraph has exclusively obtained a letter from Victorian-based AFL supremo Gillon McLachlan to NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, where he pushes a claim for ANZ to be maintained as an oval-shaped venue in the looming $1.6 billion stadiums allocation. The brazen bid comes despite the AFL and the Sydney Swans virtually abandoning the Olympic Stadium over the past 12 months as the game struggles to fill neighbouring Spotless Stadium, even for elimination finals matches. The Swans haven’t used ANZ Stadium since 2016. Picture: Toby ZernaThe NRL has responded by warning the city could lose a 20-year guarantee to host the grand final, as well as State of Origin matches, if a Memorandum of Understanding they have with the NSW Government to make the transformation of ANZ Stadium into a world-class rectangular venue the No. 1 priority is broken. “We would expect the terms of that MOU to be delivered so we can guarantee our biggest rugby league matches will remain in Sydney for the next two decades — something which will provide hundreds of millions of tourism dollars to the state’s economy,” said an NRL spokesman. The MOU the NRL has with the State Government includes the rebuild of Parramatta Stadium and an upgrade of Allianz Stadium, and in return the pledge is to keep league blockbusters in Sydney. As well as vying to railroad the hopes of rugby league and soccer with ANZ Stadium, the AFL’s list of requests include a specific emphasis on the redevelopment of the Brewongle-Churchill and O’Reilly Stands at the SCG being an urgent priority as well as pitching up for Spotless Stadium to have its capacity increased to up to 35,000. It’s bad enough that a Melbourne team won the NRL grand final ... (Cameron Spencer/Getty Images)“We believe the opportunity cost of prioritising such redevelopments (of ANZ and Allianz Stadium) at the expense of oval venues and fans of oval-based sports should be contemplated in any business case that determines the Government’s priorities with respect to stadium investment,” said McLachlan of his specific request for maintaining the “ability for ANZ Stadium to host oval sports where large crowds are expected”. Football Federation Australia has also hit back at the AFL’s Johnny-come-lately approach, reiterating that a state-of-the-art rectangular ANZ Stadium was the clear priority for the city. “You can’t blame them for trying though they’ve come to the party a bit late,” said FFA chief executive David Gallop. “The priority should be the development of world-class rectangular stadiums. Football has led the way with the demand for a high quality stadium at Parramatta. “We have already had 50,000 plus crowds five times this year at ANZ and Honduras is still to come. Those fans deserve a better facility and this city needs to compete against Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane.” Football fans also have a big claim on the stadium’s rectangular pitch. (AAP Image/David Moir)The AFL also wants academies created at Moore Park and upgraded at Sydney Olympic Park to support both Sydney Swans and GWS Giants’ women’s and girls’ teams. As reported in The Daily Telegraph, they have joined forces with Cricket Australia in their bid for a $400 million slice of the pie and McLachlan wants the SCG upgraded by the 2022 Ashes series. McLachlan points out that the Brewongle-Churchill and O’Reilly stands were built in 1980 and 1984 respectively and “do not meet the minimum guidelines of the AFL”, with the SCG ranked “last or second last” for facilities and amenities of the league’s nine major stadiums venues. However, the AFL’s audacious lobbying for ANZ Stadium to remain an Oval is the one set to most polarise opinion — particularly given the Sydney Swans severed ties with the Olympic venue last year at the urging of members. “We believe the total financial contribution required of the NSW Government to achieve all the aforementioned items would be circa $400m,” said McLachlan, who used the 60,022 that turned out for the 2016 Sydney Swans v GWS Giants Sydney AFL Finals’ derby as his case in point. “This represents approximately 25 per cent of the current $1.6 billion committed to stadiums in NSW. This would leave the remaining funds to support other stadiums in the network.”

Upgrade of the Showgrounds to 35,000? I mean, seriously Gill? Divert the budget everywhere other than where the actual demand is. They can't even fill the 20,000 seats they have for home finals, but need an extra 15,000 in the stadium and 75,000 next door just in case. And suggesting the opportunity cost of maybe hosting a one off big AFL game once every 10 years against venues with daily use in sports actually played in Sydney......... give me a rest

I would have thought there'd be some suburban rugby ground or something that they could build a new stadium on top of...? A light rail is all well and good, but if they're going to build a stadium at Moore park bigger than 25k, the transport would still be an issue. Though to be honest I reckon they should be building a 30 thousand seat stadium at Moore Park, no need for any bigger. You'd have 30k at Paramatta and at Moore Park, and ANZ for the major events.

The AFL fucking infuriates me. These are the reasons why I cannot and will not ever support both codes. People say we can live happily with multiple codes but the reality when you have an organisation as cut throat as this when in reality it's clear the reasoning behind it ins't for pure benefit of its fans of its sport but instead as way to ensure no other codes can provide a top quality product then you know you're dealing with a - oops, I just ate my own poop... of an organisation.
The NRL and FFA should come together and tell the Government that if they bend to the ridiculous last minute demands of the AFL that all State of Origins, Grand Finals for both codes as well as football internationals will be diverted elsewhere for the next 10 years. If the codes join forces against the AFL, we will get what we want. Need to stand firm.

The AFL can go and get stuffed. They have the SCG which meets all their requirements. There is no need for ANZ to be oval shaped other than them being arrogant dicks that don't want to play with anyone else.

THey know ANZ won't get used, they just want to keep it oval shaped so it negatively affects the other sports. Simple as that.

The AFL are a law onto themselves in this country. They have friends in very high places, and in all the right places. Mike Fitzpatrick, who used to be on the AFL board, was also on the board of ANZ stadium, and had to be paid out by the government when they took back ANZ. He would've been strategically placed there for the benefit of the AFL. He was paid over $100m, I wouldn't be surprised if some of that cash went back into the AFL reserves. In Victoria, the AFL has an MOU with both Victoria Police and the Melbourne media where neither will divulge any specific details to the public about anything without involving AFL players or officials without the consent of their HO. They also own 30% of the most popular Melbourne sports radio station SEN, where this season they've completely dumped all A-league coverage and are covering all NBL games. Make no mistake, this is a deliberate tactic to silence our sport. People who don't live in Melbourne don't understand just how much power they have at all levels, council, state, federal, all the way down to community level. They singlehandedly derailed our WC bid (regardless if we ever had a fair chance to win it or not) by splashing the papers with a fear campaign about how certain AFL clubs at the time would go bankrupt by disrupting their season, and they tried to deny access to the MCG for the bid, and made Victorians believe that having the WC down under was going to be more trouble than it was worth. They forced the Vic government's hand with AAMI Park's capacity, by having a tight contract with the government, where no new stadia in Melbourne at that time could be built over a capacity of 35k, so that Etihad wouldn't lose 'events' to a competitor. Let alone what they've been gifted for new stadiums on the Gold Coast and at Spotless, plus another $40m for the GWS training base. I could go on and on... I used to be an AFL member back in the day. But after learning all of this, and seeing, living and breathing this everyday, I have a deep hatred for this scum, not the sport itself, but for this administration and what they've directly or indirectly done to football over the years. Everything they do has an agenda. Believe me, they still see football as their biggest threat going forward, no matter how long away that may be, because they can't grow any further. We can, and they know that, they're scared of that, so they'll do anything they can to try to silence us... Let's hope common sense prevails in Sydney and they get 2 great rectangular stadiums, either new or refurbished.

If the state government gives any oval shaped stadium a cent, I fucking quit.
This decision should have been finalised ages ago. It’s so obvious that rectangular stadiums need an upgrade, but by stalling, Stuart Ayres has allowed every rent seeker in Sydney to smell blood and throw their hat back in. He is such a moron.
At least we know the battle lines have been drawn.
SCG Trust + AFL + Cricket Australia on one side
Versus the FFA, Rugby League and the ARU on the other.
The SCG does not need further work done now. The Trumper stand and the new Bradman-Noble stand (members) are less than ten years old. That spin about the SCG being “fifth in facilities” is the biggest load of horseshit in the world.
