Still bitter 2 years on. Time to get over it and start dreaming of your team being part of the second tier very soon.

Btw, Tarneit is not in the middle of nowhere.

Real ‘dodgy bros’ stuff this WU mob. Seems their main interest and priority is to sell cheap townhouses in the middle of nowhere with a WU membership thrown in to unsuspecting migrants. One day this complete sham will unravel and all the $ide deal$ between council, property developers, FFA and ‘silent’ investors will get exposed. WU is a farce of the highest order, a joke, a scam, a lie, a disgrace to football in this country. They’ll never ever gain traction. People aren’t stupid and can see through this complete charade.

Etihad Octopus - 7 Dec 2020 11:31 PM
Went to the game, was one of 200 people of the general public to get a ticket.

Tickets were sold on a ‘first in, best dressed’ basis.

There was certainly a large contingent of North Geelong fans there. Their active group ‘North Fans’ were there in good numbers and provided good atmosphere.

Tbh, their active group would stand up well against a lot of A-League teams, wouldn’t surprise me if the vast majority of their group were also North Terrace members.

Stupidly they weren’t allowed to bring in a drum either, security stopped them at the gate. 😂

Anyway, on to Western United.

Yes, the ‘sell out’ crowd was 200 general public members, plus officials etc.

Was a good atmosphere thanks to the North fans, and there were plenty of Western United fans too, so I wouldn’t say they had no fans there at all - it was quite the opposite.

Was just great to be at a game again.

The game itself was a foregone conclusion.

North Geelong had only been training for two weeks and are NPL2, but as someone who’s a big advocate of the Geelong grassroots scene, it was a magnificent game to be at and it felt like a ‘derby’ in some ways.

Hopefully these two teams can face each other in pre-season at GMHBA stadium each year, would really build a local rivalry there.

I personally hadn’t been to a game since February, which I’m sure is the case for many of us on here.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to being able to go to more games, and it was just great to be back at the Football again!

Was Max Burgess playing for WU? Or is he still in Sydney.

Yep, well SMFC and Co. had plenty of time to turn the game pro, so maybe dont just tear down the efforts of those who managed to do so. I'm all for reunification but that aint the way to do so.

Ok with expansion next time, will any former Nsl club win a spot? Will it be say fourth time unsuccessful?
It must be the same glaring issue time and again,  what could it be that the decision makers are avoiding, is it a mono thing, a monobrow?

Sales pitch to fans, not the FFA was my main concern.

Of course anyone can spin something in a bid, but going about it in that way just leads to disengaged fans when nothing a club promises seems to be delivered. I am hopeful they can build a good fan base once they can get their stadium and training base built though, but until then it’s going to be hard work.

As for the comments about the franchises, the failure of clubs in the A-League is a huge issue, whether there are 1000’s of clubs in other competitions or not. Like it or not, the A-League clubs need to survive and we need to build from there, not try and hope for their demise. Too much negative talk in the game already without some pushing an agenda that suits their own narrative.

Mate their sales pitch to fans was an afterthought. It may be your concern but clearly not theirs. Name, colours, location are all irrelevant to these investors, its all a land grab. They set up a "poll" to ask their potential fan base what they should be called and then went ahead with "Western United" anyway with a colour scheme indicative of the asphalt and green nature strips of the housing development they plan to build, their logo even has a pitched roof to reflect the 1000s of houses they plan to build on the land they have been virtually gifted....
The failure of A-league clubs IS NOT a huge issue for the game here, just an issue for the A-League owners and the professional game. Some can't see the forest for the trees. Even if they all fold we will still have a very strong participation rate and lots of other clubs for our talented youngsters to play in and develop to hopefully represent the Socceroos and Matildas on the world stage. Yes there will be a serious lack of money in the game, like there was before, but its not as if the A-League has been focused on the national good for the sport here for 15 years anyway so what will change?
Anyway, the A-League clubs have their independence (or at least soon will)  so happy to give them the benefit of the doubt and see how much they now choose to engage with the 1000s of soccer supporters in this country that aren't existing customers. Its not negative talk that appears to be the problem, more the lack of positive action.

I disagree mate, their sales pitch to FFA was perfect,  no need for lessons. They got the license they needed to convince the council to give them the land for free didnt they?
Dont worry about clubs surviving for the future, most of the 1000+ clubs in Australia have been around for decades, some even going back 80 -90 years... its only some of the franchises that may not make it.

It is certainly disappointing to see how things have panned out on the stadium front, but it still appears that they will have a dedicated training base and progress on stadium quicker than any other A-League club has managed to achieve.

I do think the proponents of the Western bid certainly need lessons on their sales pitch, as the reality has in no way matched what we all heard from them over and over. This set expectations very high, and as time went on the loss of confidence in delivering on promise has really been hard to overcome.

The news that WU had partnered with Calder United to develop their W-League team for the future is promising though. Calder have been a very strong club, and give a solid base for WU to build on.

With the Independent A-League coming though, the comments about ensuring all clubs survive is key. We need to all hope that clubs can survive and grow for the future, with continued development of the structure to include new clubs..

I am sure I am not alone in saying that the whole WU bidding process now looks to have been highly suspect, not the least because their "shovel ready" stadium evaporated as soon as their bid was accepted by FFA.

A homeless club without supporters or a stadium.   Yeah, great idea.

To be fair he’s not alone; I’ve never seen such passionate opposition to a club as WU are getting.
After 15 years of being stepped over, WU is the straw that broke the camel's back for me. To lose our 3rd bid for an A league license to this scummy bullshit ... no words. To miss out to Wollongong or Canberra or even that smoke and mirrors shit Stamoulis and Belteky where trying to peddle down in Hobart, I could have lived with but this collection of crooks is too much. Aparently Andrew Zinnis' son, after being kicked out of every NPL team in Victoria is now their latest recruit.... Instead of setting up their own womens program the latest shithousery is that the have "formed an alliance" with Calder United a youngish womens only club in WNPL so that they dont have to soend any money themselves.....
MCG, mate I actually admire your enthusiasm too budy but you are wrong. Western United failing does not affect Australian football in anyway at all, its like pulling off a bandaid. Best done sooner rather than later because when, in 3-4 years time, when the land isnt selling, there is no train station and the stadium is still a bunch of renders and Autocad drawings, the plug will be pulled and all the dirty water will drain into the sewers of Werribee. I feel sorry for that guy with the Yosemite Sam mustache and his Save Hakeem banners.

Friend lives in Weribee went and It was a gala day, chuvaps stand, kids running around. many outside the ground. Looked like a crowd as was reported. Alot of Croats, music.

Yeah I heard tbe same, Lots of Croatian families.... Who would have thought that the Croatian community in Geelong love soccer? Im gob smacked. Maybe the Western United faithful didnt open up their instafacebooks this week as they where noticably absent, wonder why the club was stating that they sold out the stadium when this evidently was a lie? Wonder if they lie about other things as well?

Unfortunately yeah a lot of people have this view towards WU, but as Melbcityguy said, Australian football really cannot afford WU to fail. I don't see any logical reason for investors to be interested in our game if we keep having clubs failing/folding (NZ Knights and both Queensland clubs). We all want a proper football pyramid with hopefully soon a second division, which means hopefully more professional football clubs being introduced. Some of those would require investors for the step up, facility improvements/upgrades, transition from semi to professional environment, and importantly, for clubs to be ambitious and grow. If we have 12 successful and financially sustainable clubs in our top division, it looks more attractive for investors, as well as broadcasters/streaming companies, to be interested in football here, compared to a league with four. I don't think WU was anyone's ideal choice with expansion (outside of the FFA), but they're here and like the situation with Newcastle Jets and Central Coast, we need them to become sustainable and successful. If and when the second division comes in, they're not good enough, the football structure will sort that out. But for now, we need all clubs to be doing well.

To be fair he’s not alone; I’ve never seen such passionate opposition to a club as WU are getting.

This opposition is good to build real rivalries in the domestic game. Helps legitimise WU and oh, another marginalized team that could have actually
won the GF this year if the Delbridge goal had a different interpretation to it, and that is City!
These teams came 2 & 3 last season and look even stronger this season.
Lets keep the criticism going, thats gold!
