Team of the week:

Macaulay Gillesphey (Brisbane Roar)
The young Englishman delivered another flawless display as the Roar kept just their third clean sheet of the campaign to beat the high-flying Wellington Phoenix.
Gillesphey ensured Phoenix’s in-form attack only had fleeting moments – mainly in the first half – while he made nine clearances and one interception over the 90 minutes.
He’s remarkably composed for a 24-year-old who continues to improve with every outing in the Hyundai A-League.

I am happy for the win and there were some positives to the game but wello lost that game not Brisbane winning it.

I am absolutely shocked at how deep wello played defensively. They absolutely would not engage untill well into their own half. They did not put any pressure on our defenders while playing out and really only looked to play on the counter. Their passing was so much better than us and they seemed to be able to play through us easily always finding space where pepper should have been.

If they had played with even a medium line, let alone a high press they would have spanked us. Talay got that completely wrong. Saying that if sotirio scored early in the first half then it would have been a different game. But I have never seen a team set up that defensively ever in the aleague. I don't know why they were so negative and they paid the price for it in the end

One of the commentators mentioned this and said it was probably due to the humidity. Pheonix did look sluggish. Hard to press most of the game in those conditions. Brisbane looked more stable without Aldred at the back.

“One of the commentators” being John Kosmina who has a passionate hatred of BRFC so cant be trusted to offer meaningful insight.

Nix lost the game fair and square because DWH finished when others couldn’t. For all their so called “dominance” Nix managed three shots on target all game.

And humid? It was raining from midway through the second half which, yes is humidity, but it turned it very cool and it was clear Nix were more used to playing in the wet than Roar.

But hey, keep posting the big list of excuses

Yes, I too noticed Kosmina saying negative things about Roar or rather was trying to contradict decisions made in favour of Roar when everyone else agreed with the decision. Never realized this until now.

I think it comes from his time at Brisbane City. But it’s been evident for a couple of seasons and it’s a shame, he’s actually quite knowledgeable (but known locAlly for being cantankerous in coaching circles)

they didn't need to play a high press even a medium line would have got them a result i think because it would have put pressure on our defenders /DM's who have not looked comfortable on the ball all season. i am still shocked at how deep wello played, (just look at the final 20 when they were a goal down and they started a high press).

when the game was 0-0 wello just would not engage until there was a forward pass deep into their own half. it left our defenders with so much time and space. i have never seen a team so stricktly defend that deep, not even CCM in the depths of their shit football spells defend that deep so strictly. when they were a goal down they started a high press and put us under heaps of pressure (it did leave them a little open at the back and thats how Inman got the clear chance to fluff) but if they played even a medium line while it was 0-0 they would have ripped us apart. that was amazing to see. of course if they scored in the first half on either times they hit the post they would have looked genius, but i think Talay should have made a change mid way through the first half when it was obvious that they were the better team technically (their passing was tearing us apart).

I remember back in the days of the NSL when he coached Brisbane Strikers.

Completely beyond him. Old school, arrogant and a failure.

It's the only time I have ever seen Brisbane fans walk out of games en mass well before the finish.

I don't think you remember the Roar team from early on in the season (when they wouldn't concede but wouldn't score because they sat back so deep) .... luckily robbie has tweaked his tactics.

Nice to get the points.  By my count, that makes it 4 undeserved wins, 4 lucky draws and 5 thoroughly deserved losses.  Two points adrift of the enormously talented and stylish Adelaide and a point ahead of the classy Victory.

I think O'Shea is getting better every week and he should try more 1v1 against defenders. Here's hoping the team can grab another lucky/undeserved result this week-end.

The level of skills at the back vs mid or forward are not as critical, so fingers crossed.

I've been more disappointed with Holloway. Showed immense promise preseason but has been somewhat of a let down.

Holloway is on and off. Very lazy at times. If he wants to play, he can be one of our best attackers. Not sure what's going on, maybe he's home sick?

Did any one see the article in the Courier Mail in line about the owners giving RF pass mark? It was pay walled

Brisbane Roar are knocking on the door of the top six but can Robbie Fowler’s stint as manager be considered a success?
Brisbane Roar’s owners are pleased with the progress of the team under Robbie Fowler, saying the Liverpool legend was working towards a “long-term plan”.
After a slow start to their maiden A-League campaign under Fowler, the Roar are unbeaten in their past four matches and knocking on the door of the top six.
Roar vice-chairman Chris Fong, who is also the advisor to the club’s Indonesia-based owners the Bakrie Group, insisted all was going to plan in Brisbane’s recovery from their shocking 2018-19 season when they finished second last with just four wins from 27 matches.
“We wanted to take our time finding a new coach, and we made a decision with Robbie because we liked his plan and his thoughts,” said Fong, who was at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday to watch Brisbane’s 1-0 win over Wellington Phoenix.
“We also wanted to give someone an opportunity, and we wanted him to bring his connections in, and it’s worked.
“We’re very happy with where things are going and we’ve got a long-term plan.”
Fong said the Bakries never expected immediate results under Fowler.
“We knew it would take him a while. He needed to make some adjustments, which at the moment are still going on when you see that we have just signed Corey Brown and Scott McDonald in this transfer window.
“It’s about rebuilding the squad and it takes time to do that. We’ve changed the way we’re playing and it takes the players a while to get used to that as well.
“We could have gone with a younger Australian coach but we didn’t feel we were ready for that yet.
“In terms of Robbie’s background, his pedigree, his football experience … it’s been very helpful.”
Fowler’s recruitment has come under the microscope, having brought to the club a host of players from the lower leagues of British football.
However, Fong said Fowler had the trust of the owners.
“It doesn’t mean he gets everything right all the time. I don’t think any coach has,” Fong said.
“It’s always a work in progress and it’s going in the right direction.”
Fong also defended the club’s decision not to sign any marquee players who are paid outside the salary cap.
“We don’t have a marquee player but that was also the way Robbie looked at it,” he said.
“We’re not necessarily agreeing with that philosophy of a club built around one player.
“We don’t feel like we’re the right club to bring in a big-name player near the end of their career, like (Sydney FC did with Italian great) Alessandro Del Piero.”

I find this comment puzzling.  What would make a club "ready" to appoint a young Aus coach, the wooden spoon?

I find this comment puzzling.  What would make a club "ready" to appoint a young Aus coach, the wooden spoon?

The guts of the Football Department was ripped out 5 years ago when Mulvey and Stead left. The Aloisi/Moore years did nothing to fix it and there were accusations of nepotism etc. as we all remember

With Fowler’s appointment they restructured the Dept but still lack long term stability. It’s actually a smart comment but one they could explain to fans better.

Today you’ve got Moon and Stefanutto both in there reporting separately to the Head Coach, whereas before everyone reported to JA who reported to Jakarta.

Moon will most likely be the next coach

As I expressed previously, club and owner are not with it and haven't been ever with exception of the Ange years IMO.

Now when is that second Brisbane club coming?

Huge assumption a new club would be any different - Roar under three sets of owners, GCU and Fury all say they wouldn’t  be.

I don't think you remember the Roar team from early on in the season (when they wouldn't concede but wouldn't score because they sat back so deep) .... luckily robbie has tweaked his tactics.

Robbie never set his line that deep and his defensive pattern has always started from the front. In his defensive  line the striker dictates the press and will always have some amount of high press at moments through the game. That has not changed since the start of the season.

Tallays line was the deepest and most rigid line I have ever seen in the aleague no joke. Its very hard to see on the tv. I had not picked it up in any of wellos previous games so I can't tell if that's his game play or if it was just for Brisbane but it was surprising.

Also Brisbane tend to be a slow build up team under Fowler so the rigid deep line was extra obvious at the ground.

People don't agree with his recruiting or tactics and they call him a bad manager.

He makes good decisions or effective changes and it is luck.

It is funny to see how perspective guides our choices.

When I wear their colours, I am the club.

Delusional is a perfect state of mind for football supporters I find - keeps them attending games when they shouldn’t, keeps them standing in the rain singing when really they should go and sit in one of the thousand of free seats under cover. So yeah, delusional’s good
