Shit like this makes me ashamed to be Australian

https://youtu.be/FUF9x8A3ITk

Why is a fucking comedian the only one reporting on this stuff?

I had no clue about Dave Sharma. That's the sort of thing you should be immediately sacked for.

Because the media don't want to get their arses in court. Sadly the government is slowly eroding whistle blowers laws.

Oz day wasn't on the 26th of January until 1994. So those who say they always celebrated it on the 26th are lying especially those older than 38.  Why can't we as a nation have a open discussion and maybe act like adults and find a compromise without one side acting like assholes

Australia is the only former British colony (or federation of former colonies) that celebrates its "National Day" on the date it became a colony. Every other former British colony celebrates the day they stopped being a British colony as their National Day....

The same goes for the flag. The ANZACS served under the Union Jack or the Red Ensign as did most vets. When people say you can't change the flag because that's what the ANZACs fought under that simply is not the case (though there may be some cases of the Blue Ensign use?).

The day we became a federated country was 1st of January.   But we can't have it on that day because new years day.

I'm gonna say yes as things stand now the date has to change. I have no strong feelings about the date either way in and of itself, but at this rate it's not like the debate is about to stop any time soon so it'll just get more and more divisive and toxic until it'll just get cancelled and a new date won't get put forward.

That’s fine to change it but I don’t like the idea of changing things because people might get toxic that’s going to set a dangerous precedent for other things

It was changed.  1994 was the year it went to the 26th.  Its also not even the day that Australia was colonised its the day nsw did. We became federated on the 1st of jan 1901

This is a nice TIL.

As for changing it, I think it’s worth serious consideration. Can’t be Australia Day if people are against it.

It was changed.  1994 was the year it went to the 26th.

That's a contentious one, you could say it was nationally recognised in 1935, but it's true to say that it wasn't a public holiday in all states and territories until 1994: https://australiaday.org.au/about/history/

I'm not for or against anything with this post, just presenting the record.

All of the states and territories of Australia were celebrating the national day together by 1935, 83 years ago - although it was still known as Anniversary Day in NSW, and Foundation Day in other areas.

In 1946, the Commonwealth and state governments agreed to unify all the state-based Australia Day celebrations and celebrate on January 26 as a country - the public holiday was taken on the Monday closest to the 26th.

Australia Day officially became a public holiday for all states and territories only 24 years ago, in 1994.

https://www.sbs.com.au/topics/voices/culture/article/2018/01/23/many-different-dates-weve-celebrated-australia-day

I'd like to hear more about the territory that was last across the line to set it as a public holiday in 1994 if the commonwealth and states agreed to do it in 1946, if it was somewhere like Christmas Island then the 1994 argument would be a bit of a cop out.

If the Victorian government can add grand final eve as a public holiday, surely the federal government and the states can think of a new day.

What's the significance of that day?

I think we need to rebalance the public holidays though. So many are loaded in the first half of the year.

What I can't stand is the "this was and always will be aboriginal land" quotes on facebook.

Donate your home to the Aboriginal Land Council then! They could probably use the money from its sale for various good causes.

The quote annoys the hell out of me.  The subtext, as I read it is, no matter what you do, no matter how long you or your family are here you'll always be an interloper.

Hardly inclusive.  If anything it drives a giant wedge in.

Very unfortunate to see that happening. It certainly happens often across the board with framing and angles of camera shot but the ABC doing this is particularly disheartening. The cuts to the officials didn't seem genuine as they appeared to be staring at nothing anyway. So what happened? the pre-party was just a bit of a dance and some media photos?

I've tried to understand this dancing story but I just can't. I see right wing people blaming "woke" left wing people and left wing people blaming right wing people. Now the ABC are getting criticised.
The whole thing just feels like lame culture war shit that people seem to love getting outraged over.
