Its not about folding its about negotiating a peaceful settlement, and successful negotiation typically means both sides make some concessions to reach an agreement. Maybe Putin recognising that he’s not going to win, backs down and slinks back into his cave inside the Kremlin. But that is unlikely to happen, as dictators and despots typically dont like to surrender or show weakness. Whats more likely is that Putin will continue to leverage the tools at his disposal, including nuclear threats, to achieve his strategic objectives. If that fails, and it probably will, then with no other option he may resort to dropping nuclear bombs to further signify his resolve and force Ukraine into submission. The big question is how does the West respond? If we respond with nuclear bombs then there is a strong risk of all out nuclear armageddon and one billion people or more dying. So you have to measure that dire scenario against the far less insidious one of handing a few parts of Ukraine to Russia and cancelling their aspirations to join NATO. Even though all out nuclear may be unlikely, the costs of getting it wrong are obviously catastrophic.

But at the end of the day, this is Ukraine's decision if they want to give things up. Russia is the aggressor against Ukraine and shouldn't be in Ukraine in the first place. Currently, Ukraine think they can defeat the invasion, so I can't see any deal or concession being done. So what's gonna happen is Putin will probably hit Ukraine even harder, which will create this into a protracted war draining Russia and Ukraine of resources. You say Russia has more power and leverage, and that may be true, but having more power and leverage doesn't win the day if things become protracted, and there is an insurgency. Essentially, it will require Russia to station 500k troops in Ukraine to hold it (more than half their active military), with all these economic sanctions in place. I can't see Russia being able to sustain this and will more likely implode (although China could prop it up).

His initial goal was to probably overthrow the current government and replace with a Russian puppet government, however given the amount of resistance to Russian oppression this is a goal that will likely fail even if they manage to capture Kiev and murder Zelensky. In recent days they’ve recalibrated their conditions for immediate withdrawl from Ukraine as the following: neutrality (fair), recognise Donbas as independent and Crimea as Russia. Although this is probably a victory for the Russians, peace would be achieved at least in the short term, and the West can continue to sanction the fuck out of Russia for decades, centuries and Millenia to comes. It will probably force eventual regime change in Russia so they join in the global economy again.

War with NATO = BAD BAD BAD! These cold communist warmongers are dying to push the button, it would be a mistake to think that they wouldnt utilise every single weapon at their disposal to achieve victory, including lobbing nukes into NATO. Simple solution is to give Russia Donbas, Crimea, reject Ukraine from NATO, short term defeat can be offset by long term squeezing of their economy and further denuclearisation or at least exponential investment in missile defence. MAD doctrine has failed. Why should Ukraine surrender and give up? Isn't the simply solution for Russia to retreat? Why must Ukraine entertain Russia's demands? Because Russia has about 1,500 nuclear warheads it might be prepared to use to get its way, or at least prevent the West from getting its way. Regardless of the ethics and morality of its actions they have significant bargaining power, and if we want peace then the West (and Ukraine) is going to need to make some concessions. Clown. Russia is going to lay waste to the Ukraine with nuclear weapons are they? And the radioactive fallout is just magically going to stay over the Ukraine and not poison millions of Russians and citizens of neighbouring countries. Will never happen. Hahahaha. The obvious answer is because conflict with Russia would lead to WW3, and Russia’s primary means of defending itself is with nukes. Obviously America wants to avoid engaging Russia directly in war SOLELY because of the nuclear deterrent, otherwise they would be in like flynn saving the Ukrainians. Nuclear war is horrific to think about but absolutely possible. The invisible shield that protects us privileged western countries from natural disasters, radioactive fallout and swarms of locusts doesnt actually exist. We are vulnerable.
