+xmeanwhile, as soon as macnicol stepped up I was like "oh gosh don't give the ball to him, the best player always misses" it is a remarkable trend that your best player is probably useless in a penalty shootout haha Nicely done, it looked liked a tough fought battle too. It will be interesting to see the likes of Tatu, MacNicol and co how they will go in the future, they look like promising talents from the highlights of the games.

I've really liked what I've seen of Necovski and Kasumovic in central defense, MacNicol and Treffiletti (star!) in midfield and Tatu up forward. There is a lot to like about this age group.

https://www.socceroos.com.au/news/asean-u-19-boys-championship-a-chance-new-players-shine-subway-young-socceroosASEAN U-19 Boys’ Championship a chance for new players to shine for Subway Young SocceroosLewis Wiseman // Photo Credit: Pepe AlvujarUpdated: 09:11pm Jul 8, 2024A new-look squad of players will represent the Subway Young Socceroos at the upcoming 2024 ASEAN U-19 Boys’ Championship held in Surabaya, Indonesia from 17-29 July.Head Coach Trevor Morgan explained the decision to name a fresh-looking squad was based on the strength in depth within this age group in Australian football.“We are at a stage of broadening the player base, and that is in part due to the fact we have a lot of quality players to pick from, the depth of talent in this age group is impressive,” he said.“We gave a group the chance to play at a top level during the tour to South America, and I felt this ASEAN Championship was another opportunity to give chances to new players.” Australia has been drawn in Group B for the tournament, alongside Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam and will play all their Group Stage fixtures out of Gelora 10 November Stadium.Morgan said this tournament is a great platform to highlight the strength within Australian youth football and is excited for those players making their debut.“It’s an exciting time really, there will be many debuts at the championships for our squad, and we are giving these players an opportunity to show their skill.“They have earned the call-up, and I am excited to see how they get on in Indonesia.”In terms of expectations and goals, Morgan said the tournament is there to be won.“There’s some must win games coming up, so the boys have to apply what they’ve learned, but also believe in their ability,” he said.“Everyone wants to win international football tournament and we will certainly be going there to try and do so.”Following this tournament, Morgan will select a squad for the AFC U-20 Asian Cup China PR 2025™ Qualifiers in September. The U-20 Asian Cup will also act as World Cup qualifiers, raising the stakes higher for the Young Socceroos over the coming months.“It is coming up to the beginning of World Cup qualifying, and if you do well, win one game at a time, you could end up at a World Cup next year,” he said.“It will be a massive period for the boys, some of the life experiences will be incredible over the next 12 months or so and I am excited for the group.”The ultimate goal for Morgan, and the rest of the Young Socceroos coaching staff is to develop players for the future.“We want to expose as many young players as possible to top level international football, that’s the goal, to see players progress into the Olyroos and Socceroos,” he said.Match DetailsLaos v Subway Young Socceroos Thursday, 18 July 2024 Gelora 10 November Stadium, Surabaya Kick-off: 3.00pm local / 6.00pm AESTSubway Young Socceroos v Vietnam Sunday, 21 July 2024 Gelora 10 November Stadium, Surabaya Kick-off: 3.00pm local / 6.00pm AESTMyanmar v Subway Young Socceroos Wednesday, 24 July 2024 Gelora 10 November Stadium, Surabaya Kick-off: 3.00pm local / 6.00pm AEST

The tournament's timing has created an opportunity to broaden depth across the age group, prior to Morgan selecting his squad for AFC U-20 Asian Cup China PR 2025™ Qualifiers in September. The squad features several players who have been elevated to senior Isuzu UTE A-League Men squads in the last 12-months including Zac De Jesus (Sydney FC), Jake Najdovski (Western United FC), Tiago Quintal (Sydney FC) and Fabian Talladira (Adelaide United FC).Daniel Graskoski was also named after earning promotion to Melbourne Victory FC’s senior squad this week, while Marcus Younis (Western Sydney Wanderers FC) heads to Indonesia with plenty of senior minutes from throughout the 2023/24 season.Subway Young Socceroos’ Head Coach, Trevor Morgan said the Championships provided an important opportunity to expose players to challenging tournament conditions in Asia. “This tournament is a perfect chance to develop these players through competitive matches and allow them to show what they can bring come September,” Morgan said.“We’ve made several considerations when selecting this squad, including allowing players who travelled to South America in June a chance to rest before they join A-League pre-season at their respective clubs, and most importantly, the opportunity for this group players to gain experience and perform for their country, something they have earned.“We’ve had the chance to completely change the squad between assemblies and the fact we can do this shows the depth of talent available, and the belief we have in giving players the chance to step up. It’s important we continue to develop this group as they move through our pathway, and being involved in tournament football is the perfect environment to achieve that.”The Subway Young Socceroos will arrive in Indonesia in the wake of the Subway Joeys being crowned 2024 ASEAN U-16 Boys’ Champions, courtesy of a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Thailand in the Final.“It was great to see the Joeys come away as Champions in their age group and I’m so happy to see what they achieved in their first tournament in Asia,” concluded Morgan.Subway Joeys’ Head Coach and Young Socceroos’ Assistant, Brad Maloney won’t remain in Indonesia, and instead will attend the upcoming 2024 National Youth Championships Boys’ Tournament in Wollongong.Match DetailsLaos v Subway Young Socceroos Thursday, 18 July 2024 Gelora 10 November Stadium, Surabaya Kick-off: 3.00pm local / 6.00pm AESTSubway Young Socceroos v Vietnam Sunday, 21 July 2024 Gelora 10 November Stadium, Surabaya Kick-off: 3.00pm local / 6.00pm AESTMyanmar v Subway Young Socceroos Wednesday, 24 July 2024 Gelora 10 November Stadium, Surabaya Kick-off: 3.00pm local / 6.00pm AESTSUBWAY YOUNG SOCCEROOS SQUAD | 2024 ASEAN U-19 BOYS’ CHAMPIONSHIPNAME | POSITION | CLUB | JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB | Peter ANTONIOU | Defender | Melbourne City FC | Bulleen Lions FC / Football VIC | Adam BUGARIJA | Midfielder | Perth Glory FC | St. Bernadette FC / Football NSW | Zac DE JESUS | Defender | Sydney FC | Lakeside Lions Junior FC / Football NSW | Daniel GRASKOSKI | Goalkeeper | Melbourne Victory FC | Northcote City FC / Football VIC | Zane HELWEH | Midfielder | Macarthur Bulls FC | Bankstown Sports Strikers / Football NSW | Lucas HERRINGTON | Defender | Brisbane Roar FC | Toowong FC / Football QLD | Jesse HOEY | Midfielder | Melbourne Victory FC | Doncaster Rovers SC / Football VIC | Ryley HOLLINGDALE | Midfielder | Western Sydney Wanderers FC | Sutherland Sharks FC / Football NSW | Pearson KASAWAYA | Defender | Sydney FC | Griffith City FC / Football NSW | Dylan LEONARD | Defender | Western United FC | Middle Park FC / Football VIC | Medin MEMETI | Forward | Melbourne City FC | Dandenong Thunder FC / Football VIC | Jake NAJDOVSKI | Forward | Western United FC | Spring Hills FC / Football VIC | Dylan PERAIC-CULLEN | Goalkeeper | Central Coast Mariners FC | Woden Valley SC / Capital Football | Tiago QUINTAL | Forward | Sydney FC | Baulkham Hills FC / Football NSW | Kavian RAHMANI | Midfielder | Melbourne City FC | North Eastern Metrostars / Football SA | Oliver RANDAZZO | Midfielder | Macarthur Bulls FC | Lilli Pilli FC / Football NSW | Xavier STELLA | Midfielder | Melbourne City FC | Moreland City SC / Football VIC | Arion SULEMANI | Forward | Melbourne City FC | Dandenong Thunder FC / Football VIC | Fabian TALLADIRA | Defender | Adelaide United FC | Adelaide City FC / Football SA | Ben VAN DORSSEN | Defender | Newcastle Jets FC | Lambton Jaffas / NNSW Football | Max VARTULI | Goalkeeper | Sydney FC | Fraser Park FC / Football NSW | Tyler WILLIAMS | Defender | Sydney FC | Castle Hill United FC / Football NSW | Marcus YOUNIS | Midfielder | Western Sydney Wanderers FC | North Rocks SC / Football NSW |

A question for those in the know. All of those lads are coming from A League clubs. Are there lads in the NPL that are missing out because they're in the NPL?

barely any of the players born in 2005 with a league experience are there
De Jesus and Younis the only exception. This must be a tournament being used to try and accelerate their careers?

Coach says in the article he is using this tournament to give some on the outer a chance before the AFC tourney. Not a massive fan of that because they had a South American tour before this they could have used. The boys need to have an appetite to win things from a young age as a group imo.

My thoughts too.. These U19s players all came from other Junior clubs.... The "Academies" seem to just skim the talent pool otherwise you would see a hell of lot more Aleague clubs in the right hand column no? Scouting for national squads is obviously ONLY done within the tent not outside it.

Not trying to have a go here, but which NPL players should be selected? How many young Socceroo eligible players are playing regularly in the NPL?
The cream will always rise to the top with these sort of things.

Any decent U14s at NPL level are pushed towards Aleague Academies with the promise of a "pathway" that isnt just to play semi pro football. We need heaps more teams at a pro level that can offer a better pathway than just 11 Australian Academies... England may only have a population double ours but they have 92 Football academies with a pathway to senior professional football. not to mention all the private ones....

I'm wondering are they casting the net wide enough or are NPL players that are quality snapped up by A League clubs in any case.

+xIn light of the recent news that the next U17 Joeys cohort will be touring Italy in April, I've decided to list a few players to keep an eye on for selection. Granted, I'm not 100% sure about the Australian/European based player ratio but I expect this to be a chance to nail down a lot of the European dual citizenship players whilst in Europe and get them amongst the system, something we haven't done and needed to in previous age-groups. This is a very exciting Joey's cohort with an eligibility of Jan 1st 2008 - Dec 31st 2010, though, it's unlikely we see any 2010 born players during this cycle. This tour will help establish a basis for the upcoming U17 Asian Cup qualifiers in October. This list only scratches the surface and lot's of talent yet to be discovered.
David Bolongi (2008) - Gold Coast Knights Israel Monga (2008) - Murray United Marcus Neill (2008) - Sunderland Noah Slunjski (2008) - Hajduk Split Danilo Treffiletti (2008) - AC Monza Gianluca Okon (2009) - Club Brugge Chris Irakoze (2009) - Adelaide United Amlani Tatu (2008) - Adelaide United Harrison Bond (2009) - RB Salzburg Younes Ibrahim (2008) - Brighton and Hove Albion
Quin MacNicol (2008) - Brisbane Roar William Millwood (2009) - Partizan Charlie Davidson (2009) - VVV-Venlo Noah Clement (2009) - Eintracht Frankfurt Good to see Chris Irakoze (2009) dominating the 2024 National Youth Championships for South Australia U15's. He is the top goal scorer in the comp with 10 goals. https://x.com/teopellizzeri/status/1814508318167343117 Another Burundian-Australian talent who you may see with the Joeys sometime this cycle, especially next year.
