+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xI think that our recruitment and retention is going to be similar to Penrith from now on,. Mostly we will be promoting players from the lower grades to the top 30. From now on the squad should remain fairly stable. A lot of the experienced players Gus recruited are on 2 year contacts, I think that most see out the full 2 years, but only 50% of them may be extended. Key players are given longer deals. So it will mostly be experienced older off contract players being replaced by new inexperienced lower grade players each season. But not all at once, young guys will be added when they are ready. Usually a season of reserve grade after Flegg for most players. If we have the junior talent it’s a great strategy. Unfortunately our junior base is small and doesn’t have much talent. Unlike Penrith who consistently have great juniors pushing through.
To fix this. We really should expand our junior area further south. Having my a good presence all the way to Cambletown would be ideal. Just keep putting money into junior clubs. The goal being to take most of the South West. We are scouting juniors outside our district, QLD, NSW north coast, NZ. Even Penrith scout playes. Our Flegg side made the GF, some good players in that side and a few in reserve grade that didn't get a run this year. The only position where I am not 100% sure we have good players coming through is hooker. Of course if we can get a talented and experienced player for a good price, we should sign them. I think that no one has signed RCG yet, out of the sides that made the semis Dogs are one of the few that might have the cap space. Eels are probably reluctant to tip in some money, but other clubs are reluctant to pay full freight. In our case if we sack JAC we have money to spend, and don't need to worry how much his next contract is for. I am simply repeating what Gus has said about recruitment this year and our general approach to recruitment. I know. But Gus lies all the time. I’m confident he is looking at signing a number of players with experience.
RCG would be a great start. Maybe another centre/winger/fullback type. And another prop. Keep the spine settled and add a little and we make top four with a good run with no injuries and a decent draw. Names that have been mentioned are RCG and Karapani from the Broncos. If Fox goes I can see us signing both. The longer it goes without RCG signing elsewhere the more chance we are of signing him. Talley-ho was also mentioned and he was mentioned this time last year. I lot of these signing rumours don't come true, I think c,ubs and player managers are talking but they talk to others and take the best option. If we sack Fox that apparently is 500K of salary freed up, RCG is rumoured to be on 700K at Parra. Parra paying 200-300K next year for RCG to play for the Dogs and RCG having a big game when we beat them, I would love to see that. The Parra are probably on the hook for needing to chip in foe RCG next season, it is important not to let them off. The fact that it is taking a while to get a deal done shows most clubs are thinking along similar lines. Souths or the Dragons might contenders to sign RCG and might be prepared to pay more... Talley-ho was a great player in his prime, but that was years ago. If RCG is on 700k at Parra, i cant see them paying more than 150-200max to play elsewhere.... You have to remember that if they pay him 200k to play elsewhere and then fork out another 200-300k on a replacement player, they'll be spending around 500k for a prop position which is only 200k relief of their cap to spend on someone else. Do you think saving 200k but losing a forward of RCG status is worth it? Theyd better have high prospects of the 300k forward they replace him with. Or they better have good use of that 200k SC relief. Otherwise its abit of a silly move on their part. I expect Parra to be in the bottom 4 clubs next year and if Moses misses more than 8 games, mark them down as wooden spoon favourites. Another poor season from Parra and i wouldn't be surprised if Moses wants out. A club like Parra only tries to offload a player like RCG when they have made a mess of thier Salary Cap. I think that the issue is too much money tied up in middle forwards when they are lacking depth in the outside backs. Moses, Brown and Gutho all on good money. Lomax probably demanded a salary that reflects his status as a SOO player. When some of the Parra forwards were signed/extended, they were SOO players. Aside from outside backs, Parra also need a hooker. I think their SC issues are from paying big on middles and then realising they need to spend big on outside backs. I dont think its a big deal to pay goid money on 2 of your 4 spine players....but you cant expect to do well if those 2 are out for any significant amount of time. Parras problem is the length of the Moses contract. Not are they paying him big money, any half in reserves has his career path blocked, so he wont hang around. And if Moses is out, the next man up is a nobody with hardly the ability to fill the role properly. They really needed to keep Moses' contract to 3 years so any decent junior under him can bide his time. If Moses hasnt missed a third of the last 2 seasons, they wouldnt be having such poor seasons Yes injuries to Moses and Brown are an issue... But when we beat them Moses and Brown both played, it was close to their full strength side, but they had a weakness at centre which we exploited. Long term contracts are a gamble. Manly has done something similar with DCE and that worked out. I definitely would have given Thurston a 10 year deal at the Dogs in 2004. If we did that, we probably have 2 more premierships in the bank. If Woods lives up to the hype then I don't mind a 10 year deal. It has to be for the best player and 1-2 players at the most. Halfback, fullback and prop are the only positions I would consider. Reserve 5/8 for young guys to start out in the NRL. Not prop. Never. In fact, never a forward. Maybe a hooker. Maybe. Half and FB are the only positions but even then, it has to be for a decent saving per year, averaged over 10 years, or unless there is a massive shortage of talent in that position. Props, second rowers, centres, wingers.....theres 2 or 3 or 4 in every team. There's no shortage. You want the best player, pay your 800-1M and hes yours. Top FB and halves are not thst common. There's only 1 spot in the team for them and are the only positions you can reasonably think about a long term deal, and even then, you should dismiss it. DCE has proven to be the exception. Worth it IMO. (Could be a few more) Props - Taumalolo, Tapine Halves :-Johns, Locker, Thurston, Cleary, Walker. DCE Fullback - Teddy, Slater, Edwards, Walsh, Turbo, Ponga Hooker- Api, Smith, probably Grant. Melbourne tends to keep key players without needing long term contracts. Absolutely essential for the Cows and Canberra to lock up key players on long term contracts.. Cows locking up Thurston and Taumalolo was the smartest thing they ever did. Most of their success including the premiership stems from that decision. I do agree that very few props are worth it, back in the day Artie Beatson is another. The prop has to have a big impact both sides of the ball, but particularly in attack, play long minutes and provide leadership that inspires their teammates. A lot if fans are sleeping on just how good Tapine is, if he leaves, Canberra will drop to the bottom of the table. In contrast a guy like Payne Hass is overrated IMO, good player but he doesn't change the result of games often, just plays his role well and races up impressive stats. Mostly I would sign a halfback and a Fullback before a prop, very few clubs will have a prop who is good enough or sufficiently unique. And the club has to do the deal early before the player has hit their peak, it is always a gamble. Tigers could gamble on Galvin and perhaps their fullback. The only risk is that the player on the long-term deal gets lazy. If the guy loves winning and hates losing, the risk is small. Injuries are another risk factor.

+x+x+x+x+xAlways a laugh at this time of year hearing the daylight savings debate on the east coast... The birds had me up up at 501 this morning... And then there's those fekkers with wings... No DS in WA makes sense having spent plenty of time there .. that sun stays reflects for ever across that flat ocean... 😉 We need to put WA in our time zone for summer, but only on days when cricket is played. Other days the can be on UK time GMT. I like the final ball at 9pm thing... Or 11pm with Indias over rates... 6 day tests is the odvious solution... You dont need 5 days if you bowl first or declare early on day 1..... Just pick 10 fast bowlers and a wicket keeper batsman... 6 or out every shot, no need to bat for long.... Then bowl the out twice for less, book a function room at a club for the afternoon of the second day.

Well as long as we got Patty Cardigan in return, I am only slightly gutted. Perham is ok as a winger / centre, but shouldn't make the Broncos top 17.
