They have 'non-attending' memberships, 1 game, 3 game and 5 game memberships, and people who purchase a membership for this season get a discount off next season's membership.

It costs you $110 to buy a Guernsey on the Collingwood online shop. That is how you get your membership numbers up.

Last year's average crowds were the AFL's lowest since 1996. You'd wanna hope the crowds were improving. The fall was obviously due to the introduction of the two new expansion sides. No surprise there. Nope 2011 saw total crowds of 6,533,138 in the H&A season and 614,250 in the finals. 2012 saw total crowds of 6,238,876 in the H&A season and 538,934 in the finals. Obviously the average dropped with a new team struggling to get any interest. What is really telling is that the total crowds dropped. 1 new team added, 11 extra matches in the season yet the (total) number of people who walked thru the turnstiles dropped by over 350,000. As I said, you'd wanna hope the crowds started coming back this season.

While I agree that it's good marketing, they shouldn't be able to count it as 'membership'. You shouldn't be counted as a member unless you get full season access and voting rights.

I agree 100%. In addition they should break it down with the different categories - season ticket (I think Collingwood is around 32k to 35k I read somewhere once) and the other various membership groups. But that is why clubs mix it up within their reports such as membership and takings income, they do not want you to know. If A-League clubs such as Adelaide United offered the Collingwood pack above I would suggest that the membership count would reach 10k with out too much problems. Image if they offered a similar package for every kid that played junior football in SA. I would like to see A-League clubs use this sort of marketing to increase their database. May result in some lost income up front to pay for the extras but you pick that up in marketing (wearing your products) and the ability to convert these "members" to real members. I think the Heart with their "free" junior membership for playing in a junior tournament is a good idea. You got to think long term.

Collingwood have been fined $20,000 by the ACCC for that "$20 membership" ad.

As I said, you'd wanna hope the crowds started coming back this season. Nope You've got to remember that there's still 22 rounds despite the addition of two new clubs. So whereas the older 16 clubs use to play all 22 rounds amongst themselves (176 games averaging 36k), they now have to play 2-4 of their 22 matches instead against these two expansion clubs that draw much lower crowds. Yes there are more games in total with 9 matches per week but there's now less games than before involving the older 16 clubs playing each other (156). The remaining 42 games involve the two new clubs. Add the fact also Kardinia Park (Geelong) and the SCG were half construction sites that limited Cats and Swans home crowds and as I said it's no surprise crowd numbers fell in 2011 and especially 2012 with the introduction of the two new expansion sides. If there's a code that would be concerned about their crowds it's the NRL. The A-league will bypass them in terms of average crowds within the next decade.

As far as home games go that's partly true but every sport has a bandwagon element within their fanbase. Games between bigger/successful clubs will usually attract bigger crowds than if an expansion or smaller team is playing. The nature of sport is everyone loves a name and a winner. However, for away games it isn't a cop out when the expansion teams are based interstate.

You can tell the rest of the panel have no respect whatsoever for her, Loyd barely hides his contempt for her and her personal vendetta against some of his closest friends.

So there's still 198 games played (more than before), 44 of which are played by expansion teams, leaving 154 games played by the 'old' teams (compared to 176 pre-expansion). So that's 22 less games for 350,000 less people.

Fantastic for revenue generation, I find it a little ćonfusing as I think of a membership as á season ticket, hopefully the A-League adopts some of these revenue generation ideas.

Docking points next season after they've had the chance to refresh and rebuild from this mess will be a far greater punishment.

Why would you play your guts out when you've got a punishment like that hanging over your head? The AFL are taking a massive gamble that Essendon don't pull off a couple of shocks and make the Grand Final. Docking points off them two seasons after the fact only further serves to reiterate just how much of a fucking farce the AFL are.

By the sounds of things the players' parents are getting a little restless with the whole thing. No players, no club. Simple as. Would rather lose staff than players, and with the list we have, losing players is the last thing we need.

There are reports today that several key players do indeed want to quit the club.
Why couldn't this have happened to Collingwood so we could all revel in it?

It seems the AFL might do the right thing a strip Essendon's points for the season meaning they will not play finals this year.
Then things need to move on to punishing the players individually.
