Would take Judd at his best over any other midfielder I've seen play. Never seen a player win his own ball and sprint from the pack like he could.

the fact he's just about the biggest flog walking the earth and he's a really dirty player is all that matters

Can you elaborate on this?

As someone with only a passing interest in AFL Goodes seems like a top bloke (Indigenous role model, White Ribbon ambassador, Australian of the Year, not covered in shitty tattoos, can actually construct a sentence, etc.)

Edited by jparraga: 29/5/2015 11:54:04 PM

I really don't like Goodes for his on field actions and persona but that doesn't take anything away from the great work he does off the field and he does deserve all the recognition he gets for that.

However Goodes has been one of the most hated players in the competition for years due to his tendency to dive, sook and his love of milking free kicks. The biggest thing that puts me off him is how he's the first one to cry foul when he's not happy with his treatment and then he's unanimously backed in the media as a "champion" but the fact is he is one of the biggest sniper's in the game. Plus his tendency to slide in recklessly for challenges necessitated rule changes to prevent this move as it's highly risky to the safety of opposition players, he still does it frequently however and is never called on it, because he's a "champion".

I don't buy the excuse that people boo Goodes because he's a dirty player. Chris Judd has done some of the nastiest things I've ever seen on a football field, prime examples being that horrible chicken wing on the North Melbourne player that had already been tackled to ground and his eye gouge/pressure point incident on the Brisbane player that had also been tackled to the ground, and yet Judd didn't cop boos. Goodes has never done anything dirty on that sort of scale to warrant this supposed reaction from crowds. Also, if you'll remember correctly it was Lindsay Thomas sliding in to break a Sydney player's leg that necessitated the rule change, not anything that Goodes did.

Judd copped plenty of shit for that but he gets forgiven because they are for the most part isolated incidents, he doesn't do the cheap stuff anywhere near as regularly as the others you've listed and he doesn't simulate or milk free kicks like the others. Thomas was the straw that broke the camels back with the sliding issue, Goodes was and still remains a serial offender in this regard yet rarely seems to get called on it.

On another note though it's so sad to see a player like Judd go out this way, he is truly one of the best players we've seen in recent times and deserved much better than what he's had to put up with at Carlton.

It's tough to split him and Gaz as the best of recent times but they are so far ahead of the rest IMO.

Agreed. I have Judd as the better midfielder, but might have Gaz just ahead as a player overall, because Ablett can go forward at any time and be the most dangerous forward on the field.

My thoughts exactly mate.

Both are absolute superstar's, it's just a shame they both spent so much time in non competitive sides and as a result the two best midfielders of the current era have been largely absent from finals footy in the last few years.

To be honest I only really remember him in sliding recklessly into someone one time against Port Adelaide and he actually got suspended for it, there was another incident with Josh Gibson a few years ago too that i remember Dermot Brerton arcing up about but I don't think there was much in that, I'm not convinced that he's a "serial offender that rarely gets called on it".

@MVFCARSENAL

Thought id answer you question from the Redmayne thread here.

I have no idea why Hird won't bring Giles in. Giles has been very solid in the VFL and deserves a crack as has Alex Browne.

For those who weren't sold on the 'excuse' that people used to justify disliking Goodes due to the perception of him being prone to dirty acts off the ball (or on it in this case)....

I'm not sure what will happen tbh, I can't really think of any precedents for something like this off the top of my head. If Hunt doesn't complain I wouldn't be surprised if he escapes a suspension.
