I feel for your supporters tbh, having a favourite son just ruin his legacy like this would be so hard to watch unfold.

it is . Every one can see how bad he is coping. But hirdy is head strong which is a great trait to have but in times like this . Its a hidderance. The club and hirdy need to go their separate ways for both their long term benefits.

Fucking this. The club needs to cut its losses with Hirdy and start again. Hayden Skipworth is doing fantastic things with the VFL Team (sitting 2nd) and would be ready for a crack at the top level.

Yes, at the time of posting I had not seen it in normal time. Whilst a viewing in normal time is much less incriminating it doesn't change the fact he had no business placing his hands there in the first place. I will concede that he's been unfairly crucified here but I don't believe for a second that his hands were there with innocent intentions or by total accident, he's always been a sniper off the ball.

I'm sorry but this is just ridiculous, yes we were wrong but at the time that was all the evidence we had and it seemed pretty bloody damning. The fact that Goodes has become such a protected species that you can't criticize him without having an agenda is just the height of ridiculousness and isn't even true ITT, mvfcarsenal has defended him plenty but was willing to judge him on what seemed to be pretty damning evidence.

Also the fact this was so believable really has nothing to do with the current popularity of having a dig at Goodes, it's because he's one of the most notorious offenders of off the ball snipes in the game and has been regarded as such for years now.

I think judging something like that from only a screenshot is pretty ridiculous to begin with. Also, reckon it would have received so much attention if it was any other player in the AFL?

No because no single player receives as much attention as Goodes does, but you're kidding yourself if you think any other high profile player wouldn't have been crucified with an image like that doing the rounds.

I'm ambivalent towards that incident tbh, the girl said the wrong thing but I also think publicly calling her on it in the manner he did wasn't the best thing to do either considering her age. I mean Goodes shouldn't have to stand for that but the public vilification of the girl that followed could have ended very badly, especially considering the fact that her facebook profile was shared around for abuse and she did receive plenty of death threats. No matter what she did no one deserves that treatment and whilst Goodes isn't responsible for that backlash I imagine he'd probably have done things a bit differently if he had his time again.

At the end of the day though Goodes has a reputation for being a c*nt on the field and a legend off it, I dislike him the same as I dislike any c*nt footballer that doesn't wear my teams colours.

Shocking news to wake up to today, RIP Phil.

I just saw on the news that his daughter is overseas and just received the news, imagine getting a call saying your dad is dead and your brother has been arrested for it.

Quote:
Adelaide Crows coach Phil Walsh has been stabbed to death and police say his son will be charged with murder.

Police and ambulance crews were called to Walsh's house in Bungey Avenue at Somerton Park in the early hours because of reports of a domestic dispute.

Paramedics treated Walsh, 55, at the house but he died at the scene from multiple stab wounds.

Officers searched the area for his son, 26, and detained him a short time later in First Avenue at Glenelg East.

A mind for midfield

Phil Walsh's death will be felt across the AFL after his coaching stints left lasting impressions at Port Adelaide and the West Coast Eagles.
I don't think it's reasonable to ask them, from learning this news on Friday morning through to Sunday, to even think about football.
Gerard Whateley, ABC commentator
Police said he was taken to Flinders Medical Centre for a psychological assessment.

Walsh's wife Meredith was taken to hospital to be treated for a leg injury.

SA Police Superintendent Des Bray said police were called to the home shortly after 2:00am.

"I can't tell you anything about the argument or the circumstances of that, but as a result of that both Mr Walsh and his wife received the wounds and the wounds ultimately caused Mr Walsh's death," he told reporters.

Superintendent Bray said a knife was found at the scene, but did not say what sort.

"As you would appreciate, the investigation is in its infancy," he said.

"We can't speak to the son at this stage and obviously [the] wife is receiving treatment so as the investigation unfolds, I'm sure we'll find out exactly what happened."

Superintendent Bray said no-one else was at the property at the time.

Crows players are gathering at the club's headquarters at West Lakes. They are scheduled to play Geelong on Sunday afternoon.

The fact the players did that spontaneously was fitting. Nothing will ever replace the horror of whag happened but for the players this will help them with the grieving process.

Perfect storm engulfing the AFL's heartland
Date
July 22, 2015 - 8:08PM

Rohan Connolly
Senior AFL writer for The Age

This week, the league confirmed that it would initiate a formal discussion of key stakeholders about just where the indigenous code is headed as concerns grow about the bastardisation of the game into at times a form of glorified rugby.

These are sobering times for AFL administrators, who at the conclusion of a 2014 season that could on many levels rightly be called a stinker, essentially issued a mea culpa to the fan base.

The league got too clever by half with its scheduling and ticketing, presuming the supporters would, once again, obediently fall into line. But they didn't, particularly in this supposed heartland of the game. Hence the AFL's attempt this season to win back the disaffected through greater "fan engagement" and more family-friendly timeslots for matches.

What it may now be discovering, however, is that a convergence of factors and the gradual erosion of the faith of the traditional fan base has resulted in a perfect storm, which continues to bucket down troubled waters.

Two-thirds of the way through the premiership season there's not a huge amount of evidence that the disillusioned are flocking back to their sporting church.

After 66 games to date at the three Victorian venues – the MCG, Etihad Stadium and Geelong's Simonds Stadium – crowds are nominally up on the same stage of last year, by a total of just 27,500.

But even that small comfort looks a bit different when you account for the difference the return to a more traditional round one kick-off made this season.

In fact, two of the five highest-drawing games in Melbourne so far both came in round one – the Carlton-Richmond and Hawthorn-Geelong clashes at the MCG. The five Victorian games that opened the new football year drew nearly 65,000 more people than the more pedestrian offerings in 2014. Which makes what's happened subsequently another worry for the AFL.

There are about 100 games per season in what is home to 10 of the AFL's 18 clubs. From 2007, after the redevelopment of the MCG, crowds averaged between 41,000 and 43,000, climbing to nearly 44,000 in 2011, when the juggernaut that can be a successful Collingwood was still riding high on the ladder.

But that average fell by more than 3000 the following year, recovered a little, then dropped by more than 5000 last year to fewer than 37,000. It remains to be seen over the rest of this season whether much, if any, of that number will be recovered.

And there has to be plenty of doubt about that right now. Because if you're a footy traditionalist without a huge interest in the newer, non-Victorian brands, there's not a whole lot to get excited about.

Were the finals held now, five of those playing off for the premiership would hail from beyond this state, and the MCG could conceivably host just two of eight finals played before grand final day. And as dominant as have been Hawthorn at their best, it's fair to say that for the neutrals, the novelty has well and truly worn off.

The nationalisation of the game has certainly been successful, and many of us have enjoyed watching the likes of Brisbane, the epic battles of Sydney and West Coast, and the first appearance of Fremantle in a grand final.

But the greater good isn't something that necessarily means much to the parochial hordes who follow the more traditional clubs.

And it's even harder for them to enjoy the spectacle from a purist's point of view when the game currently serves up more stoppages than we've ever seen before and lower scores than we've known since the late 1960s.

All the while, the AFL, at least worried enough now to be seriously considering what steps need to be taken to redress the slide, continues to involve itself in a broad range of community initiatives and gestures beyond running a football competition.

That might be worthy. But there's a time and a place. And right now, it's the core product that requires more urgent, full attention. Because without that, who knows how big an audience will be left to pitch any such message to anyway.

Victorian crowds rounds 1-16
Year Average

2008 43,148

2009 41,273

this weekend he literally did nothing at all, the west coast fans in Perth booed him and goodes' teammate Lewis Jetta did a war dance after his goal like goodes did a while back and it's brought the whole situation back in the spotlight
