Good post, I wouldn't mind seeing another one with potential npl/aleauge players who are coming up or yet to get decent game time.
Or just NPL in general.

Fucking hell post of the year. This shall forever be bumped to keep it close for constant reference. Didn't know about Pennington. So there are 50. If 10 get good European careers that's probably the success rate, right?

This list has made me go blank on who we have pre 1997. Mabil, Hrustic, Susnjar, Elder, Garuccio, Tongyik, Kamau. Lots to look forward to. The dark Holger days should never be repeated.

Fantastic post!
There should be a thread for the most promising young players here and overseas so this perfect.
Some of the opinions from some players a slightly disagree with but that’s a matter of opinion anyway.
But well done!

Lets turn this list into a predictor and see how far off we are in the talent scout department. 1. Big 5 Europe 2. Mid-tier Europe 3. A-League 1st Team 4. European Obscurity 5. A-League Squaddie/Obscurity 6. NPL 7. Selling Real Estate

Read that thread from 4 years ago, most of them have played in the a-league and some even have gone overseas and played.
That Martin Lo kid got mentioned a lot given he was 16 at that time, where is he now? Assuming somewhere in the NPL?

I reckon this and Aussies Abroad should be given a 2 week trial as stickied threads and if we all show effort they shouldn't die. It's just a matter of looking at the very top. My eyes are trained to just look at the threads and the stickied ones get completely missed.
Additionally we've all been a bit lax with posting in world football etc. Just a forum phenomenon isn't it? I'll admit I can be lazy and not open that other tab....

@johnszasz
We’ve tried stickying Aussies Abroad 3 times, and each time it died, save for a few regulars. It wasn’t the same, with around 70% less posts than when not stickied.
The lesson has been learned - Aussies Abroad is best where it is.

The great thing about this thread Neanderthal which you might not realise is that jan 1st 1997 or after is the cut off for the next Olympics.
So all these players mentioned are eligible for the Olyroos :)

I’m tempted to add him and a couple of other players that I realised I missed since. Maybe if I find the time one day. Otherwise, I’ll do another one next offseason or in the lead up to the Olympic qualifiers. Keep letting me know of players to add if you guys think of them. The great thing about this thread Neanderthal which you might not realise is that jan 1st 1997 or after is the cut off for the next Olympics.
So all these players mentioned are eligible for the Olyroos Smile Mentioned that in the first post 😉 It’s gonna be a good Olympic cycle.

Personally I think Margush from Adelaide United should be added on here as goalkeeper. He's a future international if his games a couple of years ago were anything to go by and he's only kept out of the starting side because of Izzo.

+xBumping this. Who has made the best starts to the new season? Keanu Baccus and O'Doherty are doing ok for WSW. O'Doherty scored a nice goal today as well. https://www.a-league.com.au/video/jordan-odoherty-puts-icing-cakeRyan Strain has done well in the cup playing at right back and has been ok playing wing in the league since Halloran is playing upfront and Kitto and Nikola were injured. I can see him being dropped in favour of Marrone though, since he's done well at RB when Strain'sbeen playing wing. Apostolos Stamatelopoulos will get plenty of mins since Baba and Blackwood are both out long term, however we are looking at a injury replacement striker. Blackwood looked good before breaking his collarbone too. Devlin has looked tidy when he has came of the bench for Sydney.

personally, I don't think he's as good as Arzani atm, but I think with enough game-time he could begin to shine as did Arzani.
I'm a bit unsure whether he has enough pace to be a winger?

Based on the previous generation, ie. the generation of Bruce Djite, Nathan Burns, Tom Rogic, Robbie Kruse, I doubt many of them will amount to anything.

+xpersonally, I don't think he's as good as Arzani atm, but I think with enough game-time he could begin to shine as did Arzani. I'm a bit unsure whether he has enough pace to be a winger? Luke Brattan said an interesting comment when he said he was more a 2-way player where he offers more in 1 aspect rather than the razzling Arzani where he shines only on 1v1 aspects. From what ive seen from Najjarine he certainly can score a goal or two based on what ive seen from him in the youth teams, the only problem is hes quite lightweight and seems shyer unlike the more confident Arzani. But both share similarities and hope can futfill something useful for the national team in the future. It would be nice to develop more wingers and all-around attackers like Arzani, Najjarine and Folami as these type of players can break a game open with one move, the more the merrier!

+xWhats up with Najjarine? Joyce spoke him up, hasnt really given him a look in. Hasn't performed well enough I feel in the opportunities he's been given. Fair Enough, get Najjar or another guy in and see how they go. He just lacks something... i just can't put a finger on it but i haven't been totally impressed by him in his cameos against tired defences.

+x+x+x+x+xQuoting to have this visible on current page so users don't have to click back and forth So, um where's the actual list...? gotta be on a computer to view I am on a computer. It's just a list of how the rankings were determined and a summary by position... Is it embedded using some fancy plugin? Hmm. I can view all images on phone and computer. Scroll up a bit. Can you see it? There's only 9 paragraphs of text, a few introductory paragraphs, one on the rankings, and another few on the different positions. That's it apart from a link to the first page of the Aussies Abroad thread. I'd paste a screenshot but you can't do that on here.

Great to see so many on this list make the Olyroos squad and be seen getting minutes this season. Amazing how someone like Souttar has come around nicely. Glad we got him from Scotland and evidently missed this original list. Scored for Fleetwood on the weekend too. Atkinson and Gersbach are fantastic. O'Neill, McGree and Pasquali are so exciting. Some other notes. Dylan Fox has had a mixed year in Holland. 12 games at lower levels. Still only 18. Hopefully not another Harry Ashcroft. https://www.transfermarkt.com/dylan-ryan/profil/spieler/480022Theoharous has had little game time this season but is hopefully getting educated at Gladbach. This is a prime example of where expansion will benefit our younger players and hopefully excite fans too. A local, energetic product. Josh Laws, 8 starts at Dusseldorf U23 then not in squad since late last year. No info but has to be injured. Contract ending in June. Young Cam McGlip, another Scottish Australian sealed a deadline day move from Birmingham U23 to Swindown Town. He hasn't featured yet. Anthony Kalik has had a number of starts in 23 appearances but no scorer points. Quite a number have been injured in Arzani, Folami and Popovic.

Millislav Popovic was in Braunschweig II in season 17/18. Currently in season 18/19 he is playing for SV Lafnitz in the Austrian 2.liga.

Yeah unfortunate he didn't get a chance with the first team in the 3rd division after very good goal to game ratio in the 4th tier. He's done his knee now and is out for a while.

Need to add Dylan Wenzel Hall to the stikers list. He would almost go to the top based on current form IMO.

Bumping this beauty. Lots of the predictions are coming on nicely. Some have inevitably disappeared and others have come onto the scene. How I want Italiano, Iredale, McGree, Arzani and O'Neill to rule in a gold shirt.

+xNever would of thought Caletti would end up in the lower Norwegian leagues.Hopefully can push on. What happened with John Roberts? He was always too small to play a sitting six as a defensive role. He is not good enough to be regarded as a deep lying playmaker. His usefulness is too limited so I am not at all surprised that he was dropped from A league squads. I don’t know the Norwegian league well but I can’t see him climbing up the euro ladder.

So I don’t think he is capable of the 6 role in any euro setting. I would be suggesting the East Asian leagues to him if I was his agent. Better than where he is atm. Low lever euro carries the name only not the quality.

John Roberts has just scored for Australia U20. Surely he'll get in a matchday squad soon.

With NYL starting soon, anyone got a list of relatively unknown players to watch out for this season? Would great to see a bunch break out and go from NYL to AL through the season - can only help the national teams.

Caletti is more than capable but people judge on size and speed way too much in Australian football.

Thanks for bumping this a few times Johnszasz. It was good to get updates in this thread after I've been on a hiatus from this forum for a while. I have to to say that I feel pretty disappointed to see how little they've all developed in 2 years. Who do we still see as our current highest potential prospects? McGree still looks good I think?

I would add Aiden O'Neill to that lot. I thought he is still only 22 (born 4 July 1998), and Melbourne City would have won the Grand Final with him on the paddock. All things being equal (and they never are), I reckon his signing makes them early favourites for the 20/21 Season.

Still love this thread. Melbourne City have certainly had some decent youth come through. Each club has done well at their own time and do have 1 or 2 each doing well. Sydney, however, have some really interesting prospects. What are they doing do well? Is there something unique or special in their work?

Sydney, however, have some really interesting prospects. What are they doing do well? Is there something unique or special in their work? No more than several other clubs. But it’s Sydney so people write about them because, err most of the press is based there, and people lap it up.
If you want to know how good a clubs youth system is, look at players age 20-25 today that came through that system.
I don’t know Sydney that well - I’m sure there must be some?

Glad to see most have kicked on here. Midfield somewhat disappointing whereas some strikers have given up the game. Still, top value in Iredale next season hopefully and Juric is going great.
