$2bn stadium and housing development secures funding
https://www.news.com.au/finance/real-estate/2bn-stadium-and-housing-development-secures-funding/news-story/64f6df90ec8ff58e2a5d711027e98189

An A-League soccer club in Melbourne has finally locked in the funding required for its $2 billion super-development, including a 15,000-capacity stadium.

A-League soccer club Western United has finally locked in the funding required for its $2 billion super-development, including a 15,000-capacity stadium, in Melbourne’s west.

The project, to be built in the fringe suburb of Tarneit, will cover a 62.5ha site and encompass new apartment blocks, housing subdivision lots, a hotel, commercial office space, an indoor sports arena, training and medical facilities, shops, bars and parkland.

According to The Australian, Western Melbourne Group, which owns Western United, has secured a $50 million debt facility from New York Stock Exchange-listed building technology group Johnson Controls, which will allow the project to commence.

In 2022, Western United chairman Jason Sourasis said the group needed to raise an additional $50 million in order to get the project fully under way.

Funding for the rest of the project is coming from a public-private partnership deal with Wyndham Council and Melbourne developer YourLand Developments, which will build the project, and private investors, including athletes such as Collingwood star Scott Pendlebury, tennis player Thanasi Kokkinakis and Australian Olympic basketballers Dante Exum and Chris Goulding, along with wealthy Melbourne families.

Plans for the development have already been approved by the Victorian state government and were instrumental in Western United being granted an A-League licence in 2018.

Johnson Controls has a history of working on large US stadium developments.

Western Melbourne Group has already begun work on a 5000-seat training facility at the site, which will be used to host home games this year, according to Mr Sourasis.

Western Melbourne Group has already begun work on a 5000-seat training facility at the site, which will be us according to Mr Sourasis.
“We will be playing in Tarneit, in the City of Wyndham before the end of the 2023/24 A-League men’s and women’s seasons and we look forward to our fans having a place to permanently call home,” Mr Sourasis told The Australian.

The new stadium should be ready sometime during the 2026-27 A-League season, he said.

A sensible approach to expansion and the building of the pyramid would be what is needed in Australian football.
That would include no more teams being admitted without a suitable ground to play in. Hopefully this will happen now that Fox Sports isn’t running the league.

well, it would seem all relevant permits have been signed off on and its finally full steam ahead. However if they can't get the temporary seating up in time for the start of the current season, its hard to imagine a 15,000 stadium will be ready to open in less than 3 years.

Once the Land has been sold and built on, the club can officially die and a Westfield go up on the block.

100,000 people within a 2 km radius is a big fucking waste of Retail opportunity for a football team no-one wants

Western United is increasingly enthusiastic about moving into its new home in the coming months and is eager to take as many opportunities as possible to stage home fixtures at the venue.

Unless a game is cancelled due to the state of the pitch or an extreme weather event, a game should never be rescheduled 11 days from kick-off. Many people would have made plans by now.

I give it 5 years maximum and the A League franchisees will be wanting to integrate into the pyramid. How and where (position/rank) it will happen is the interesting question. To me they should do it now, when they can dictate terms - by going into the top tier. I don't think they'll be as cocky in 5 years time.

I predict they will be looking to off-sell the license as part of their value capture enterprise.... kick the franchise can down to Tassie or whichever other regional area wants to "have a crack at this new whizz bang entertainment/sport thing"  The poor fans that jumped on board for whatever dopey reason can just suck it up... who cares.
