Ok, was there expansion when David Gallop was at his previous job, in his ten years? Ok, does anyone truly expect expansion with him here now?? We are under attack, we will all be salary capped soon..ha ha lol. Get real!

FOOTBALL could eventually be trumped by other sporting codes in Tasmania if the AFL fails to unveil a blueprint for the future of the game in the state, experts say.

Professor Jonathan West, who last year presented AFL chief Gillon McLachlan with a report for a strategy on the game at the elite level in the state, fears if the league doesn’t provide a long-term plan at next week’s AFL commission, soccer could easily swoop.

The AFL Commission will meet for the first time in Hobart next Friday, with McLachlan to face heat over his comments about why he believes Tasmania could not fin­ancially support a team. Prof West, the architect of the forests peace deal, said while it was “unthinkable” to imagine Tasmania no longer being an AFL state, it could happen if the A-League jumped the queue to set up a side.

“Most of our young kids play soccer, they look at soccer on the TV, soccer is getting a real push,” Prof West said.

“Imagine if soccer put a premier league team in Tasmania … and Tasmanian kids could barrack for a Tasmanian soccer team. I reckon you would find over time, if AFL didn’t get on the front foot, kids would start saying ‘I don’t need to switch to AFL’.

“The unthinkable could happen and Tasmania could become a soccer state. It’s happened in Western Sydney .”

The AFL’s preferred model is one team playing up to eight matches at both ends of the state, instead of the present Hawthorn in Launceston and North Melbourne in Hobart.

Although the State Government’s new five-year, $19 million extension of the Hawks deal keeps the club locked in until 2021, Prof West believes it provides the perfect time for the AFL to decide on a strategy.

“The thrust of [last year’s AFL-backed] report was one team playing at both ends of the island would be viable, in fact it would be very strong.

“Strong on field and strong financially and therefore we should have a one team strategy and Gillon accepted that.”

But he said the Hawks and Kangaroos were renewing their contracts.

“The commission needs to say ‘OK, the next five years you are locked in, we know what we are going to do, so we have some good breathing space to make some serious plans that are long term’,’’ Prof West said.

The A2 League is a must. The NSL was a semi-pro league established in 1977 that had 42 different teams in it. Are we really saying that in at the next TV deal - forty years later we can't have semi-pro league of up to 20 teams with travel and accommodation covered by the FFA.

This is where expansion will come from. The FFA will pick their 2 favourites based on large markets to join in 2017 but what happens to the rest.

An A2 league that is truly national needs to be established and this is where our national footprint should be used to increase the level of consciousness of the sport around the country. Possible teams could include places like Geelong, Dandenongs, Coffs Coast, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, North Queensland, South Melbourne, Sydney United, Marconi, Adelaide City, Brisbane Strikers, Palm Beach, Springfield, Goldfields. Hobart, Launceston, Canberra, Wollongong.

Let the teams develop in A2 and when they reach a certain level, in facilities, professionalism, crowds and corporate support they can be considered for the A League. Some will never make it that far, just as many Football League teams will never make the Premier League - but they are part of the elite structure with the possibility of moving up a la Bournemouth into the Premier League.

a) Bring proper marquees to the league - this is proving more difficult with each passing year

b) Introduce more 'derbys'.

The next phase of expansion will undoubtably be in Sydney and Melbourne, then (huge maybe) Brisbane. There really isn't two ways about this, FFA aren't going to go to a place where there should be a franchise etc, Foxtel will dictate where they can increase subscribers and that's where we'll go!

More Sydney and Melbourne based derbys = more money from foxtel = more money for marquees = more money from foxtel....

i support their bid however it is embarassing to see a page run by idiots where half their posts are hoping for brisbane roar to be bankrupt.

Regarding the "A2" suggestion - I think this is what the NPL process is going to head towards in the long term. I think this is a better way of building from the ground up.

The issue is that we are still suffering from scarce resources - the FFA "could" fund an A2 league, but this takes money away from the other parts of the game. We are still prioritising consolidation of the A-League, and rightly so. Brisbane is about to go bankrupt, Newcastle is owned by the FFA, and the Mariners are always on a knife edge.

I feel sorry for them, they could have shut up shop like northern spirit, parra power etc when the Nsl ended but stuck at it and have remained ambitious, they should be more bitter than us...and they probably are.
