+xThis club will struggle to get fans from areas like St Albans , Sunshine or Footscray, as it is easier to get into AAMI Park or Marvel Stadium than to Tarneit. The whole temporary base in Geelong part makes it even worse for connecting to their target market. You don't catch public transport much, don't you? VLines on the Geelong line run from Geelong to Wyndhamvale to Tarneit to Sunshine to Footscray and onto Southern Cross. Its 13 minutes from Sunshine to Tarneit. Its 18 minutes from Footscray to Tarneit. Its 3 stations from St Albans to Sunshine and then you can get a connecting train to Tarneit. And its 30 minutes from Geeloing to Tarneit. I probably should add too that Sunshine station will be turned into a superhub over the course of the next 10-20 years with the new Airport Line and the Ring Rail being connected to Sunshine. And there are also plans to add more tracks and electry the train line through Wyndhamvale and Tarneit including and building multiple new train stations (including one at the site of the new stadium).

I do like the Three Rivers FC name but fear people won't relate cause it's not a term already in use. If it were... It would be a lock.

+x+xi can tell you a few things. black and blue (a teal shaded blue) seems to have a bit of appeal to them. So does gold (due to the 19th century gold rush in the west of Victoria). What about' Eureka FC'? Gold and Black Save that for a Ballarat team.

This whole 'vision' crap being sold by the WMG is just a mirage. Watch them bail out once they've made their money on the cheap land they've hustled from the council and turned it into cramped, crappy townhouses that most of that area consists of. It is not soccer heartland out there. It's a suburban wasteland. Sunshine, St.Albans, Footscray, Sydenham, Deer Park is the true soccer heartland out west. Easier and more convenient to get to town than it is to Tarneit from those suburbs. I know, I grew up there. They're going to need tens of millions to keep their football investment a going concern before the first ball is kicked at their supposed new world class stadium. This whole project will probably take 10 years to complete. It's not just a matter of let's just build some roads, train station so people can get there. It's not that simple. Kardinia Park will look completely shit with 6-700 people there. It'll be a disaster and completely soulless. You need to hit the ground running and make a good impression from the absolute beginning with these type of franchisers. People aren't stupid, they have plenty of leisure choices to choose from in Melbourne. If it's a hassle and inconvenient then no one will bother. $20 million is a small price to pay however for the property swindle these guys have pulled off. Of course they're celebrating, no else is though. Just a stupid decision that has very little football merit but plenty of 'real estate' merit.

I had to laugh at the media release saying that their catchment extends to Ballarat and Bendigo, give me a break! You've summed it up well, in five years time, we'll be digging this post up. Look how quickly SEX shut up shop, WMG is following their exact modus operandi. It's an almighty land grab, and WMG have thought it through a lot better than SEX.

I'm betting the afl will have a little word to Wyndham city council and voila itll be another footy oval. I live in Wyndham and the afl have massive pull with our council . Afl heavy weights come down to werribee and meet up with Joanne Ryan . But in saying that she is very supportive of the wmg

The Melbourne City Facebook page is a barrel of laughs haha.
Take a look, every third person posting, talking about jumping ship and joining West Melbourne lol.
Looks like they'll get at least 1-2 thousand ex-city/heart fans at least.

I see the whinging about all the infrastructure taking 5 - 10 years ( no one really knows at this point) however so what. Australia’s first football owned and purpose built stadium is a milestone. It’s the future with long term planning for once and should be commended. I wish West Melbourne well.

I’m sure that quite a few City supporters in that area may well jump over to WMFC.
City are a Mess, with so many strategic mistakes over the years that even as a fan of the club sees my patience wearing thin.
Personally know of a couple of casual Victory fans in Geelong, who are currently relatively disengaged, who will be jumping on board WMFC, but I doubt that would be common.
This club will have a very hard time trying to build a fan base. Their research seems to continue to say they can tap into a catchment area of 1.2 million, but that’s just smoke and mirrors.
When Victory have such a stronghold on existing fans in the region, City having some presence and a lot not really that interested, it better hope that there are a lot of people in the area that have sat on the sidelines in the hope that a new team will come their way. Very unlikely that would be though.
Good luck to them.

Will they be a club that wants to win at all costs like Victory or look to promote the best young talent like City? Or be a bit of both? Finding that identity will be the key.

Kewell would have to be on the radar, given he has some experience overseas now (hit and miss success though), but a profile that will bring attention.
Aloisi at Heart got the role because of the latter, but Kewell at least has more experience at this point that he did when he took the role.
Living down the Surf Coast for a couple of years wouldn’t be bad either, but getting a coach and players to want to live in the Wyndham area when they move won’t be as easy :)

They will bring in some big name players to act as ambassadors for the property development :)
Overall, the bid documents would have to have shown who these mysterious investors are, but let’s hope they do announce who they are soon.
The overall stadium precinct plan is apparently being released soon, which will include all infrastructure development requirements and other land uses that will be undertaken. I foresee some higher density apartments, entertainment, hotel, retail and commercial. A train station is set to be built at the site, which will likely see electrification of the line occur up to Wyndham Vale, it could could well be a major hub of the area when the land on the other side of the railway is developed too.
The area does need more to improve its overall community and services offering, which this could well be a catylist for, but the fact the football team won’t be playing there for a couple of years puts them on the back foot from day 1. They will have to rely on the Geelong public to turn up, as the numbers heading down from Wyndham to go to games likely won’t be that high.

Agree with your points Hearts Fan. This would have been good if everything was ready in place and all you had to do is turn up to a brand new stadium, 5 minutes walk from the train station, grab a beer before the game etc and look forward to watching newly signed marquee Ibrahimovic (or someone of similar ilk). So easy to attract a crowd, create hype etc. Instead they're going to start off by asking potential fans to rock up to Geelongs AFL ground (cap 35k) and watch Scott Brown put in those bone crunching tackles. WSW is a success because they flew out of the gates, Gold Coast, Nth Q'land and Heart/City are flops because they screwed things up from the very start for fans. Very hard to win them over if you don't do it right from the start. The FFA should be concerning itself with football matters not long term property developments.

Spoke with a Heart fan earlier today who was actually excited about West Melbourne and changing teams. He's as casual a fan as there is and I am not even sure he has been to a game. Also used to go to Victory games back in the day too. I guess a lot of these types who just haven't managed to get into the two existing Melbourne sides will make up a fair proportion of their support.
Early success though is key, as noted. I guess for me my first and second games were the Adelaide semi final and 6 nil GF, so I was hooked from then on.

I grew up in the outer south east and think a western Melbourne team is great in theory.
I have lived out west for many years and one thing is Geelong will not be associated with a Melbourne linked team. The AFL team and their supporters hate that they have to play games in Melbourne and are mostly anti Melbourne. I don't think many will jump at a half assed club that's real home will be Western Melbourne.
As for the stadium. It's great and long term thinking. Going to be a rough few years before they get in there though. Even once it's built will probably take 10 or so years to make it hub for the area. But once it's done should be a winner. Hopefully the owners stick around until then.
The Three Rivers name being thrown around is cool and may help to engage Geelong ( but I don't think will get many from there). They probably can't compete with victory as a "superclub" but might be able to go down the community route. But I don't know.
Hopefully the owners see it through. In 10 years it might be something great.
