I hope FFA got the licence fee upfront. But what type of guarantee was there on the stadium i wonder?
Otherwise anyone can promise a stadium and not follow through.

For the name they could do worse than cash in on the gold rush and Eureka stockade which was in Ballarat.

West Victoria FC works best out of those.

Something like Melbourne 1851 FC could have been better for Heart back in the days, not really this club.

So Scott Brown declined their offer for their marquee spot. Apparently the money was very good. He just didn't fancy playing for a team with no fans.

For mine Athletic is a try hard name unless they also start basketball, netball, running teams etc as well. It’s not an athletic club like tensions sense, it’s a football club. Well, a franchise.

Do any footballing Athletic FCs actually have anything to do with multi-sports club. I know Charlton Athletic were only football when they were formed and I'm pretty sure Wigan was the same.

I think the Athletic name has a bit to do with the WMG logo. I don't mind it, but i'm not the biggest fan of any of the possible names. Hopefully they get the colours right.

If you look at the history of many sporting clubs that are are 100+ years old, it's not uncommon for their origins to be actually athletic clubs rather than football clubs. In the mid 1800's, they didn't really have football, baseball, basketball clubs but rather they were gentlemen's clubs where men would get together and partake in a variety of different 'athletic' sports. With these clubs with a long history, the name athletic just got carried through to football. For a brand new team to be called Athletic but being strictly a football club is a bit strange. However, it's not terrible if they are actually considering covering more sports. I wouldn't be at all surprise if the mythical new stadium ends up having a running track and other facilities on the space parcel of land.

Can you find one professional "Athletic" football club that began life as a multi sports club. I certainly can't think of any, Athletic Bilbao, Atletico Madrid, Charlton Athletic, Wigan Athletic, Oldham Athletic all seem to have started life as Football only clubs.

Yep
But not for $15 million
Another solid example of FFA making a decision based on how not to let smfc in and settling on an underwhelming bid
When this goes to shit and takes the league down with it, no sympathy from me
The FFA are already out of credits and driving on fumes before expansion

I cannot believe the FFA signed off on this West Of Melbourne Wasteland FC bid. Meanwhile SMFC could have
been readying themselves, rallying the troops for next season and actually bringing some much needed excitement and enthusiasm to the league. Imagine the hype for their first game of the season, imagine the hype for the games against new rivals and renewed rivalries. I'm a 12 year MV member, an MV fan from day 1 but during the late 90's early 00's I spent many afternoons and evenings at Bob Jane and bloody loved it. F*(k the FFA, F*(k WMG and F*(k the empty paddocks of Tarneit.

You won't really find any in the way your thinking because sporting clubs didn't really exist in the same way they do now. In Athletic Bilbao's case, the athletic club was started by some students who went to the same gymnasium and picked up a love of football from studying in England. At the time they would have been playing other sports besides football. Back then, the term 'athletic club' was just what these types of groups were called. There were no leagues, just groups of people that shared common interests and started competitions with other local groups. The name 'Athletic' is just a carry over from terminology in the past.

AC Milan were originally "Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club". I wonder how their XI would go in the club's other sport nowadays?

The WMG bid was always about property development in Tarniet and had nothing to do with creating a football club. now that property prices have dropped and banks have tightened lending on property the financials probably dont stack up so teh chinese backers are gonski

i can tell you as a fact that all the investors are australian, so this rumour is pure bullshit. probably made up by saltly South Melbourne or Team 11 fans.

The gold rush started around Ballarat and Bendigo and extended to many places in 1851.
It's interesting that the gold rush ,meant gold output from Victoria was greater than any other country at the time and it turned Melbourne into a boomtown.
So Victoria 1851 F.C includes a large area and draws on significant history.

You can be assured any name involving gold will have good feng shui for chinese investors.Plus a historical connection ,because of the chinese in the gold fields.

The bulk of the area that this club covers is not in the goldfields. Volcano, lava & bandicoot references would be far more appropriate.

Lol.
True, there is a tenuous connection to inner west melbourne. But the whole of Melbourne experienced the gold rush.
Geelong was the major port for gold at the time.
Ballarat is far west ,but still west.
Creating an emotional historical link along with a geographical link can only be a plus.
During the gold rush, a lot of West Melbourne probably was nothing but land.
It's an illusion based on fact.
Think of Vasco de Gama in Brazil. No real connection to the explorer. But it still creates passion for the fans.

Still i agree West Melb Volcanoes or Lava is more likely. It's the Australian way.Victory ,Roar,Mariners...etc...

No offence but there's been a few people from outside Victoria on here suggesting Ballarat names for this Melbourne team; maybe let's leave those names and themes for a team that might make it one day from Ballarat itself. :)

Maybe I'm just weary of politicians from up your way telling me that I'm afraid to leave my house to go to a restaurant lol

As to your first point, if the FFA didn't get contractual concrete (pun intended) milestones for a stadium in the contract with WMG then Gallop moves out of the laughably incompetent territory and into the potentially criminally neglectful field of play.

Given that it now seems the interim deal they had with Kardinia Park that got them over the line ahead of Team 11 seems to not even have existed at the time of FFA announcing their decision then who knows what's in store.

Haha I've just had a crazy realisation. By stealth and choosing a far craftier path than South  Melbourne Hellas, North Geelong Warriors have just been admitted to the A-league!!
They'll start right from round 1 playing out of Elcho Park though they haven't ruled out changing the name of the club to Lara Lava FC!
We've all been had, lol
