Hope they don't go with Warriors. That's what the Tele nupties call WSW sometimes :)

West Melbourne Warriors vs West Sydney Wanderers, what a mouthful

New A-League franchise Western Melbourne and North Geelong in battle over Warriors nickname
DAMIEN RACTLIFFE, Geelong Advertiser
February 8, 2019 4:06pm

NORTH Geelong Warriors legend Josip Skoko has defended his club’s decision to protect its nickname from incoming A-League franchise Western Melbourne.

The NPL2 club filed a trademark application with IP Australia on Monday, four days after Western Melbourne submitted four proposed nicknames for trademark — Athletic, Warriors, Pride and United.

The Geelong Advertiser is part of a News Corp campaign to help the new A-League franchise develop its nickname and colours.

Skoko, who played 51 games with the Socceroos, said his club didn’t want to risk losing its identity to the new A-League franchise.

“It’s a name we’ve had for quite a while, but not just that, it’s been our nickname for almost 30 years,” the Warriors director of football said.

“When we were growing up, that was our nickname and that’s why it became our name later on when the name had to be changed.

“It’s something that goes hand-in-hand with our club.

“Obviously we’d look at doing whatever we need to do to keep what’s a little bit unique to us.”

But Skoko said North Geelong would be open to discussions with Western Melbourne.

“It’s pretty much in our hands. If we want to really push it, we will,” he said.

“If we don’t think it’s worth it, if we think they should have that name we’ll speak to them and they’ll get it.

“I certainly don’t think clubs with history should be swept to the side and new clubs coming in should be able to do what they like; I think it’s absolutely not the way it should work.”

North Geelong was founded in 1967 as North Geelong Croatia, but was forced to change to the Warriors in 1994 when the Victorian Soccer Federation banned ethnic names.

“We’ve been Warriors for a long time and that’s part of us. I’m not saying someone else shouldn’t have the name, that’s for another discussion, but we’re certainly proud of the name and the part in history it has to do with us,” Skoko said.

“I just think if you’ve got two clubs that are quite close to each other, especially if the new one is coming in, there are plenty of names out there.

“I’m sure they can find one that will be them and not someone else, I suppose.”

It’s not the first time suburban clubs have tried to fight the Australian powerhouses.

Spotswood club Melbourne City was involved in a naming rights dispute in 2014 when A-League franchise Melbourne Heart was bought out by English Premier League giant Manchester City.

Skoko said club identity was a huge issue in Australian soccer.

“A lot of us clubs were stripped of our identities way back when we weren’t allowed to put our own names that we wanted to on, which wasn’t great,” he said.

“Of course, that was part of the reason why we played football — strong community — and we’d like to think going forward, as well as in the past, we can tie that in closely to who we are.”

Western Melbourne will join the A-League this year, using GMHBA Stadium as its home ground until a new stadium and training centre is built in Tarneit.

Very weird. The optimist in me had thought that the two entities had some kind of discussion or agreement with regards to the name. Breaking it down you'd think at the least Horvat and Skoko would have had some kind of pow wow about it in relation to the future of, and the connection between the two clubs. But nah, lets just slug it out in the media. Unfortunate. WMG not playing  out of Elcho Park afterall, just looking at thieving a name. A silly name at that.

The Croatians never give an inch and always put themselves first, if Horvat thinks he is gonna get a hand out from this community he is dreaming, they aren’t sell outs like the Greeks and Italians lol.

Oh wow huge if true, anyone would have thought he'd be overseas after the World Cup, despite Arnie giving his RB spot to one of his boys.

You'd still expect Risdon to secure a gig in Japan at the very least.

so i have done some investigating over the weekend and it turns out that Birmingham Sports Holdings were part of the original bid team, but were let go before the final bids were submitted. there appears to be a lot of disinformation being spread by haters and online trolls.

"let go" by who ?... other bid members who had more to offer and didn't think BSH were... ???
"let go" by the FFA coz they didn't meet acceptable standards ?
Let go sounds like they were politely told "no thanks" but by who ? It would be interesting to know who's doing what and how for this franchise and if they have any funds or if they are just going to sit on the land they've been gifted and find a bit of cash to pay for some boots, kit and a website.

I believe it was the council that didn't want them involved. so probably Kate Roffey.

thats because they don't wanna be known. only the FFA know who's behind the bid. seems like they have done remarkably well keeping it all quiet.

There is being quiet and there is being anonymous. Piet van der Pol is a quiet owner, but we at least know who is. The Bakries are quiet owners, but we know who they are. So why all the cloak and dagger stuff surrounding the ownership and financial backing of the WMG franchise?

yeah i think its strange as well. you'd think coming out would actually benefit them in terms of silencing the critics.

No doubt lots of disinformation being spread, the cost of lack of transparency I guess. Some of the so call 'source' are well known A-league haters so I have no idea why people actually believe them.

My understanding is North Geelong are a partner club of WMG. Honestly feels like a bit of a publicity stunt trying to protect a name that was/ is never going to get up.

Not from Victoria obviously so dnt know anything about the relevance of the coloura but like the name and colours.

Risdon, that marquee and Stephen Taylor all seem to be good signings too. Seem to be making good decions in the coaching department too.

Glad it’s not Warriors as Heidelberg Alexander and North Geelong Croatia would have had something to say about that.

I reckon it would have been Hovarts preferred name though with white and red as colours.

In a resort somewhere
