"Football in South West Sydney is about to take the first step of a giant leap forward following the formalising of an agreement between Hyundai A-League newcomers Macarthur FC and three grassroots football associations in the region.

The Macarthur Football Association, Southern Districts Football Association and Bankstown Amateur Football Association, have committed to working closely and collaboratively with Macarthur FC for the benefit of the game in the South West.

Over the next six months, representatives from Macarthur FC will work productively with the three associations, who collectively represent more than 90 clubs and 28,000 players, figures that are set to rise exponentially during the coming years in what is one of the fastest growing regions of Australia."

A good move.  It would appear this move has as much to do with building a membership/fan base as it does a youth pipeline.  Well done.

So they’re not going to have an Academy and instead work across 90 individual clubs. That’s a big mistake imo.

What they are discussing is how best relationships between an A-League club playing in an independent league, 9 NPL clubs playing in FNSW leagues and 90 community clubs playing in 3 separate District Associations (DA) should operate for the benefit of football in the south western Sydney region.  Of the 9 NPL clubs one in each DA is owned and operated by the DA and the other 6 are separate entities.  All the NPL clubs also have boys teams down to U12s.

I'm not sure what is proposed now but there was discussion at one stage of using the 3 DA NPL clubs as feeders.  I'm not sure whether that would negate the need for their own academy or just be defining a development pathway.  To be licensed for AFC participation a club can either have their own academy of have agreements with other parties to operate them for them.

As Waz indicated work started today on Macarthur FC's training venue.  "Five football fields, a gym, swimming pool, indoor futsal courts and administration facilities will be included in the new facility funded by the federal government, local council and Western Sydney University."  Macarthur FC will be the major tenant.  It will be ready in 2 years time.

It is designed to house A-League, NYL and women's teams and their indigenous academy, Dharawal FC.

Ticking plenty of boxes.  Macarthur was always the obvious choice as an expansion club and that extra year means they will quickly surpass WU on all metrics.

I think some minor renovations have already occurred (to get it up to speed for A-League matches) and that long term they definitely want to redevelop it into something amazing.

Let’s be honest, Macarthur FC are far better placed to get things right than Western United. It really did seem that the FFA were spooked by the declining interest and feedback from fans that wanted change, and rushed the implementation of one club at all costs.

Canberra had a ready made stadium, were not a consideration to protect the WSW this season but unfortunately didn’t come with a Foxtel incentive payment sweetener.

I do tend to think that both MFC and WU coming in next season, giving us a 13 team league, would have been wiser, but hey, we aren’t privy to all the information so it’s just an opinion.

The below taken from page 403 of this document dated 21/05/19: https://www.campbelltown.nsw.gov.au/files/assets/public/document-resources/councilcouncillors/businesspapers/2019/11-june/ordinarymeetingagenda11june2019.pdf
  • The new A-League team, the Macarthur FC Bulls was launched last week. Council expect this team to bring financial benefit and community engagement to the area. The Committee was advised that an upgrade to Campbelltown Sports Stadium (the home ground for Macarthur FC Bulls) has not been requested, but funding is being allocated for future asset improvement when required, as part of Council’s normal budgeting practices. The General Manager noted that the Macarthur FC Bulls will provide many opportunities for youth development football programs, including an Indigenous youth program.

The below is taken from page 171 of this document dated 10/09/19: https://www.campbelltown.nsw.gov.au/files/assets/public/document-resources/councilcouncillors/businesspapers/2019/10-september/ordinary-meeting-agenda-10-september-2019.pdf
  • $543k - In the previous financial year additional funds were allocated to refurbishment works at the Sports Stadium which were unable to be completed in the previous financial year. This carry over will enable the completion of these works including, fencing, air conditioning, kiosk and mobile vendor improvements, signage, scoreboard renewal, furniture and repairs to the athletics track.

Macarthur FC appoint Ken Stead as Director of Football

HYUNDAI A-League newcomers Macarthur FC have secured a major off-field signing with highly regarded coach and mentor Ken Stead announced as the club’s inaugural Director of Football.  In his role with Macarthur FC, the former Brisbane Roar assistant first team coach and director of football will initially focus on delivering a root and branch football department structure, from the senior teams right through to the club’s academy and community football set-up.  Stead was a key figure in developing Roar’s much-admired playing style that delivered multiple honours and nationwide respect during the Ange Postecoglou era.  His deep knowledge of football department structures, broad international experience and lengthy list of contacts around the world, will be valuable in establishing a best-practice model at Macarthur FC.  In addition to his positions with Brisbane Roar, the Scot’s CV includes roles with the Socceroos, Olyroos and Young Socceroos, the Scottish Football Association, the Iranian National Team, Al Wakra Sports Club in Qatar, Wellington Phoenix and Coventry City in the UK.As head of the football department, Stead will also play a central role in ensuring the club’s culture and values are integrated and consistently practiced throughout the club.

Earlier this year, Stead directed and organised Australia’s first ever International Football Coaching Conference Australia (IFCCA), attracting renowned keynote speakers from all corners of the world.  Speaking about his appointment, the 57-year-old said it was the opportunity to build something special at Macarthur FC that tempted him back into the Hyundai A-League.  “The region has impressive participation rates and is known as a hotbed of football talent.  To shape a football structure that will deliver new opportunities and pathways for these young players is a very exciting project and one I couldn’t resist,” he said.  “I’ve known the club’s Head Coach Ante Milicic for some time and I’m looking forward to working with him and his team.  Ante will have full control over first team matters with my initial focus being on building a whole-of-club structure with a view to long-term success.  “I’m aiming for a collaborative and productive relationship with the local associations, clubs, coaches and players.   Consultation and regular engagement are the keys and we will work hard to create the right environment where everyone can flourish.”   Macarthur FC Executive Chairman, Rabieh Krayem, was buoyant after securing Stead’s signature.  “Ken is someone who knows the game as well as anyone and understands not only what we want to achieve, but how we want to achieve it,”  Krayem said.“We are absolutely thrilled that he has decided to join us.  Ken brings vast knowledge and experience to the club which puts the football department in a very safe pair of hands.  ”Stead heads overseas at the end of this week and will take up his full-time role with Macarthur FC in December.
