Start with our fittest perhaps? Irvine and Amini certainly are our fittest. Maybe try and use Mabil for 45min early to get a goal or assist? It's an interesting one.

I reckon we’ll lose. Our Asian Cup efforts were just foreshadowing how we’ll go in qualifying tbh.

I certainly don't have my hopes up. If Sainsbury is a shoo in as Daddy's pet and how poor he was in the Asian Cup I am preparing for the worst.

Meh

Kuwait home or away is 3 points.

We should expect to win.

If our players and manager can’t manage the weather, ref or opponent it will be a disaster.

what I don’t want to see however is, when we win the match, that we pretend it is such a monumental effort akin to beating Germany at the WC.

its Kuwait.

yer this has been promoted through the FFA.
IF your a Telstra mobile customer you got it for free that I am and downloaded.
Noticed leaflets were being handed out like mad during FFACup games etc weeks ago.
Works fine, covers all our top end leagues incl PL/FFACup and Roo games ofcourse.

As mentioned before game on Wed/tomorrow morn 1.30am.

Yeah KAYO looks to be a niche market streaming service created by Telstra/Foxtel to help fill the massive hole left by EPL leaving Fox Sports.

What I find interesting is that now this guy pops up out of no where and starts mass producing Kodi Addons (just recently) for just about every Fox / Telstra service available on planet earth. Not against it by the way and these companies should get more into it.

Few here will have experienced the  heat in Kuwait in September - because there isn't anywhere else on earth as hot!

It was hard enough walking down the street for 500 metres when I lived there at this time of the year, let alone play football!

Kuwait are dead certs to win this fixture.

It did drop from 45 degrees one day to 40 degrees, than went back up to 45 degrees. Let us hope for a cool change of 40 degrees!

Yeah, you have told us a hundred times that you have lived in Kuwait...

The socceroos have played there many times so know what to expect. This time last year we won 4-0 there.. so what do ya reckon?

1-0 win or 0-0 draw don't see us losing this match but if we did then it isn't the end of the world (This happens when we don't get 3 points away in Taiwan...) Kuwait are still rebuilding since their FIFA suspension and are a mixed bag. They drew 0-0 at home with Nepal earlier in the year but scored 7 past them the other day mainly down to Nepal's lacklustre defending.

In the past I’d expect to win but I have since re-evaluated just how good we actually are. Let’s face it, we’re nowhere near the side we were. I think 1-1 or 2-1 loss.

This is isn’t me being negative, I just think we aren’t good.

Literally, have about a trillion sports channels and live sports on Kodi now (Kodi mounted on 3 TV's in my house).

I see you can also add these addons links directly to your TV channel list in Kodi through IPTV Simple client or TVheadend. Looks a little complicated though

Here's the thread on that: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2788029

Kuwait beating the Socceroos is not a upset, There the firm fav going into this match. I do believe however that the roos need Taggard to fire to get anything out of this match.

Well Arnie said the players needed a break from the back to back tournaments we have been involved in. 🤷‍♂️

Seems pointless when most of them don't play consistently, or have 6 month breaks cause they play in Australia. It seems their club season is their break from back to back tournys so his reasoning doesn't add up.

Try YouTube live. Could be someone who puts it up and it may dodge the copyright guys.

Perhaps the Kuwait national broadcaster has a stream on their official site. I don't know what it is.

Kayo would work with an Australian vpn. It did in January but maybe they've clamped down.

Will be interesting to see how Taggart goes as a lone striker as his club Suwon Bluewings play a two striker system although they've recently changed to the one the majority of Taggart's goals have been when he has a man next to him

Very happy with the 11. Sainsbury it's fortunate but hopefully he'll be switched on. Jeggo starting is fantastic. Such an engine vs Korea and hopefully it'll give Mooy the room to do his thing. Front 3 looks good. Mabil available from bench.

Would love to see Souttar get his cap sorted then he's ours.

I'll be playing Roblox while watch this tonight. Good luck boys. Leckie has been shining @ training apparently.

Mabil might get a 5 minute cameo in the 4-0 loss. GA probably accepted a payment from the arabs to lose no doubt.

Yeah good luck guys.

If you did, how did you fare with Kuwaiti border security/immigration?

Once the pressure was applied as Jozeak made line up changes, the Aus defence  struggled compared to the first half.

Often the Kuwaiti midfield ball carriers were closed down too slowly. Hence they were able to take 1 or 2 touches more on the ball, or have more effective body shape, to create better final passes to teammates.

Another instance at a set piece, Irvine allowed the Kuwait attacker to get between himself and the free kick taker and he got a shot at goal from a dangerous position.

We are up 3-0 against the side that beat Nepal 7-0.  Looking forward to the game against Nepal in Canberra next month would that make you stay at home because the game won't be much of a contest or would you go to see if someone can beat Archie's record?  :)

I don’t even care how good or bad they are. I’ll take wins every day of the week. I thought we’d get beat in Kuwait so let’s just sit back, relax and enjoy the victory

We are up 3-0 against the side that beat Nepal 7-0.  Looking forward to the game against Nepal in Canberra next month would that make you stay at home because the game won't be much of a contest or would you go to see if someone can beat Archie's record?  :)

It is a World Cup qualifier.

Never underestimate the opposition.

On a bad night we could miss an extraordinary number of goals for chances created. We have in  the previous WCQ campaign and at the Asian Cup.

If Kuwait want anything from this match they need to bring on their two stars ASAP but overall a good performance from the Roos soft goals but I'm sure we'll take it. Wish we stopped with this passing around at the back nonsense especially against sides like these should be playing for corners or really go at them.

We should be winning all these first round group games like this doesn't matter if its Kuwait, Jordan, Nepal or Taiwan

Jordan leading Paraguay in a friendly 2:0. Same Paraguay post 2:0 in Japan. Decent Jordan at home and perhaps Paraguay can't be too interested. Food for thought.

Giannou for Taggart on 62. Mabil for Leckie on 63 and Amini for Irvine on 82. Good that we keep it up. A slight shame we could see Souttar or Hrustic but I'd start both vs Nepal.

I would have stayed up for it if it was on FTA. It’s no good that they’ve put the socceroos behind a paywall. Really annoys me. I’m saving the kayo trial for slightly more interesting games.

Then we would have a legitimate offensive threat even against European and South American opposition....you know like when we had Timmy up front.

If it ain't broke....! Leckie's second goal was a result of the Kuwaiti defence not paying him enough attention. I reckon not having him as the main man up front works well. I'd certainly be giving Taggart another shot as striker, particularly against Nepal at home. We need him to break the shackles and become as prolific as he is for Suwon.

Leckie has really struggled to score goals in the past. Good to see him score these two from a few metres out.

He has had an extraordinary amount  of bad luck in the past.

He has had so many shots going into top or bottom corners, saved by brilliant fingertip saves from opposition keepers. This hasn't helped his cause when he has also struggled to strike the ball more effectively from other reasonable scoring positions.

Honestly? Great game. Played well in the first half and got the job done by half time. In the second half we didn't need to push and our players could rest a bit and still maintain energy. Defensively sound and walked away with the points and a fairly comfortable win away from home.

Really can't ask for much more.

I don't know if that was the case OR more so Kuwait lifted as you'd expect being down playing at home AND they put on their 2 best attacking players.
A huge error by their coach regards the first half not starting them but worked for us big time.
TBH they broke us a few times and had it not be for having a quality keeper as we have Ryan who stopped 2 really good chances it might have been whole different 2nd half.......
Not happy that we hardy made their keeper work 2nd half but as some mentioned we bagged the much needed points away thats all that counted and our 1st quali.
Mooy really showed this game what we missed during the AC, Irvine worked great 1st half giving Mooy room to take and distribute.
Mooy shot was superb and that 2nd half long ball for Mabil to run on was peach/perfectly placed and deserved being put away by Mabil.
Am I wrong thinking we looked better than at the AC at this early stage ?

It is because the midfield was the most balanced it has been for a decade. Mooy, Luongo and Rogic are too similar players. Mr Consistency Jeggo
was matched perfect with Irvine's physicality and Mooy's brilliance. If Jeggo holds up against better opposition Luongo and Rogic should just be substitutes in the future.

I actually was about to say the same thing. Amini when he came on for Irvine slotted in well also and like Luongo can cover each of the three positions.

look agree, your only as good as your last game so, that 1st half we actually beasted them that we don't see too often.....

Midfielder, I hear you and to me this is not a bad strategy for the players themselves should know to adjust as it happens/needed BUT if they don't soon enough then GA or any coach needs to stand up and bark the instructions and get more info out during breaks.
Its only one game and a game we had the upper hand, lets see the return leg and more onwards obviously.

I'm just glad this first game went as it did for these boards are harsh and many not in favour of Arnold imagine what the posts would be like today.
Hoping we can be more positive for its a uphill battle full stop, people expect so much today, we got what we have re the squad that is early days for many, no Euro or better known Gaffa as some wish, we just got plain ol cranky well paid Arnold lol........

My key point apart from the changing formations is this time as I see it,  we played to our strengths not to a system.... Ange the Dutch guy at teh WC, The German & the Dutch guy before him all tried to play a system... Arnold for me anyway seemed to play to the players strength and not try and force on them something they were not use to.

I didn’t see Arnie change formations, it seems his made his system more flexible especially in midfield, it’s still a 433 on paper but has variations.

So I honestly don’t know what you mean by playing to it’s strengths when his trying to make this team more versatile, how far it goes will see against tougher teams.

I saw three variations, which are pretty standard practice, Barca.

4-2-3-1 in BP in the defensive half.

1-4-3-3  defensive midfield  triangle in the attacking half in BP.

 4-4-2 flat midfield in BPO.

For this phase that is as tough as it is going to get. Kuwait in the middle East first game up. Done and dusted now we get to belt the living daylights out of Nepal and Taiwan and well as for Jordan...we have all seen that movie before. They will probably beat us 1-0 in their home game off a counter attack when we lose concentration trying to get through their 9 man defence. It won't matter though as it will be a non event.
We should be looking towards the future and our goal of getting out of the group stage at the WC and experimenting with that in mind.

Mooy shot was superb and that 2nd half long ball for Mabil to run on was peach/perfectly placed and deserved being put away by Mabil.

It was amazing, and, so was Mabil's first touch receiving it from such a difficult position to assume effective  body shape.

nice way to put it but I reckon they looked knackered in the second half.

Thought we finished the stronger side though. Mabil should have made it 4-0 near the end.

Great win.
Tricky away trip first up and we cruised through it. Stoked for Leckie grabbing a brace, and nice to see Mooy finally bag a goal. Was hoping Taggart would get on the scoresheet but he'll get his chances in the near future.

leckie's 1st goal was lucky but really annoys me how people dismiss it a goal is a goal we should be happy.

i just watched the highlights but looked like we did well onto the next one

Yep, how often in the last few years has that sort of chance drifted just wide? Take them when we get them and wish for more :)!

I was going to say, take away two soft leckie goals and the game could be alot of different,  but in saying that... you've got to be there to put it away, which we haven't been able to do... so if leckie keeps that when can we call him the "Aussie Inzaghi"?

Not a chance re Inzaghi lol.....
Look his goal off the shin was a fluke, right spot right angle as he stood :) but his 2nd, a good spin around to keep the ball on its course towards goal, normally he would have mis timed that :)  so yer he put them away for a change.
Mooys was text book having a go edge of box hit so sweet.
Mabil should have - instead of going over the top of the keeper kept it down on the ground would have been in.

My reading of this match to say other early matches we have played, is  we played to our strengths not to a system, further we continually throughout the match changed formations to suit  the match as it was being played.... Arnold seemed to trust his team to  adjust and organise themselves to the state of the game.

It seems to me Arnold has set the team out with a number of formations depending on the circumstances of the match and has drilled them into them.... At the Mariners this is what he did .. .

The other Mariners of old like thing that struck me was the sweeping and distribution by Maty Ryan. The way BHA sit back so much this strength of his has not been so apparent of recent times even when playing for the national team. Having John Crawley as part of the NT set up seems to brought that aspect of his play back.

The new brighton under potter play him as a sweeper keeper in a back 3/5. He had regressed in this departmentblast couple of years as you can imagine but gdtting back to his old self.

Good start by the team and Arnold. He had the team well drilled (like the Mariners of old).  Good start to WCQ.

I'd like to see some of Arnie's detractors laud him for coaching an excellent game plan and selecting the right players in the right positions against Kuwait, where we have really struggled in the heat in the past.

Liked the pass from Taggart to Mooy. Shows he's not just about putting his head down and selfishly trying to look good.

Shows he understands the game more.

A fairly committed performance by the boys. Did anyone really think Kuwait would win? ha ha

Admittedly they had a couple of good shots, but Ryan looked alert.

Australia did well in the 1st half I just don't understand how they went to sleep in the 2nd half and not concede, something they cant do against Jordan.
Good game and I thought they would lose.

I've seen us struggle so much in that heat.

I lived in Kuwait at this time of the year.

I suppose it is better to play at 39 degrees in a dry heat in Kuwait, after sunset, than in tropical Asia at 32 degrees with high humidity and the sun out.

I was expecting an ugly 0-0 in the heat with plenty of unpunished fouling from Kuwait and even more grass rolling and stretcher action with miracle recoveries, but our early goal put paid to that.

We even scored one from open play, which is an unexpected bonus.

Still shaking my noggin at the Kuwaity coach leaving his best forwards on the bench in the first half. Played into our hands. Couple of nice saves by Ryan which added to the end result. All up a good performance, well played to the team. It is good to see our coach actually out thinking the opposition one for a change.

Agree, a poor finish. Should have slotted it along the ground rather than trying to lob the keeper. He also should have put an earlier shot on target, rather than hit the side netting - even the the keeper would probably have save a shot on target it may have resulted in a second ball for someone. Mabil is still inconsistent, hopefully he will improve as he gets more experience.

Mabil shouldve scored frm that beautiful ball frm Mooy. Should ve been 4-0

The main missed opportunities were  two each of Taggart and Irvine in the first half.

From good positions they don't work the keeper hard enough. If we can't convert from those positions in  open play, we won't qualify.

The pleasing aspect about Taggart though is is his improving  technique on the ball with first touch, dribbling 1v1 in tight spaces, running with the ball , plus shielding and holding the ball up.

His defending from the  front  in team game  plans for squeezing in BPO and Defensive Transitions was also excellent. He forced turn overs in the  half of the pitch.

ATM if Taggart, Maclaren and Giannou can start scoring regular goals at international level, it augurs well for our qualification chances for the next WC.

The worst facet of Taggart's play last night was from 2 good opportunities to strike the ball cleanly, he under performed shooting with his left foot.

One pleasing phenomenon  was the excellent first touch  he made when he was wrong footed, and off balance, as he provided the assist for Mooy to score his rocket.

Leckies goals record has improved a fair bit in recent years. By end of 2016 his record was 3 in 37 which was worse than kruse at that point.

Its now 11 in 62 which is respectable for an outside winger / sometimes right mid and sometimes wing back

Imagine Mcgree and Mooy in midfield... that’s what we need

Would be alright. McGree one for the future. Rogic far better tho, and Arzani we will see when he comes back . Hopefully good

Was a solid performance, might aswell be qualified for the next stage after that win. Got the job done early before the heat killed us

We have also lost to, or at least failed to beat Jordan in two successive WCQs in Amman.

Didn't we struggle to beat Jordan in the 2019 Asian Cup too on neutral territory, or did they beat us at this year's  Asian Cup?

I can't remember!

Having to play games in oppressive heat in tropical Asia or Middle Eastern summers, often dragging our players out of winter, is a tough gig.

Ye Jordan beat us at the Asian Cup and i believe the last time we played them in 2015 in Jordan. But either way with Qatar not needing to go past this round, we can lose to Jordan and comfortably qualify to the next stage.

We got a fortunate draw with two minnows and a Kuwait who just got back from a ban and a ruined squad.

Shit, I just realised that Qatar are playing qualifiers.

Why aren't they automatically qualified?

Because this counts as Asian Cup qualification. All i know how this effects the qualifiers is an extra 2nd placed team will go through to the next round.

Assuming they come first in their group or are one of the top 4 runners up, of course.

Qatar beating out Oman, Afghanistan, India and Bangladesh for one of those spots is a pretty safe bet though obviously.

I watched a replay this morning.

Must say I was thrilled with the result and performance!

Last time we played Kuwait at this time of the year in extreme heat, it was a disaster!

Harps and Hill stated that Arnie derived great benefit from having a week in Dubai prior to the game to acclimatise and have quite a few training ground sessions.

A few things in attack that bothered me, was Taggart having two excellent goalscoring chances, that he didn't do better with. Also, Irvine had  two decent scoring opportunities that untroubled the keeper. It was good they got into good positions to score from open play, but we have to be more clinical.

I'm disappointed that we didn't do better with these chances, because the set piece goals resulted from poor defensive marking and  poor defensive   shape. We are  less likely to get them in the future against tougher opposition.

Our inability to score from  open play, apart from Mooy's screamer, is  still a worry.

Even Mooy's screamer, was the product of Taggart being closed down too slowly, before he passed to Mooy to score from outside the box.

In total, Australia's goals all resulted from mistakes from the opposition - not excellent play from us with effective build ups through the midfield  and Proactive goals.

The shape Aus deployed was a 4-2-3-1 in the defensive half of the pitch in Ball Possession .

It evolved to 1-4-3-3 with the defensive midfield triangle in the attacking half in Ball Possession.

The formation evolved to a 4-4-2 flat midfield in Ball Possession Opposition.

Initially, Mooy and Jeggo sat as the DMs, whilst Irvine was the number 10 in the midfield triangle. Later Mooy moved forward to take up the number 10 position, as Amini sat as the DM screener, with Irvine moved further back to partner him in the defensive midfield triangle.

Newcomers Jeggo and Borello did quite well.

Taggart was effective, apart from failing to capitalise on his scoring  chances against a weaker opponent than many we will face in this campaign. His holding the ball up and shielding has improved.

Ryan was great as a shot stopper and a sweeper.

I was pretty pleased with the style of football and ability to hold shape by the Socceroos.

They held the team shape well in Ball Possession and Ball Possession Opposition.

There appears to be no thread for it, but seeing the Mariners play a Tas State Eleven a few days ago in a practice game, comparatively CCM really struggled to hold their shape in BP and BPO as effectively as the national team.

The Socceroos were so much better at this.

Moreover , the handling speed from the Socceroos seemed  so much quicker, and, they made so few mistakes in possession under the same squeezing intensity   from Kuwait, as the Mariners received from Tasmania.

At WCQ level you just to get the job done, there will be always things to work in the performance but ultimately you want to get the 3 points especially at the first stage.

I thought Aaron Mooy was outstanding, it also looked the midfield 3 was quite flexible and useful options in playmaking, forwards runs and breaking down play with no set positions., different from his custom 2 holders.

Taggart always proving he’s a better No.9 option than Juric and MacLaren too.

Of course the opponent was poor too but I hope we realise you just want to go through unscathed at the first stage of qualifiers.

Irvine is an incredible player for us - really hope he can make the step up to the EPL sooner rather than later. He's a big, strong midfielder with a great engine and incredible in the air.

Agree about these qualities, but he is weaker at the ball with his feet in handling speed, and passing and moving in tight spaces.  With the newer  brand of possession football we need players like this in midfield when the Socceroos are in possession.

Sometimes Irvine does not track his man as well as he should in BPO.

I like Irvine's late runs into the box. He  poses a similar scoring threat from these late runs as Cahill did in his earlier days. He is possibly of more value as a number 10, than a number 6 for the Socceroos.

That was a good result and performance. It was played in the cool months just before the 2019 Asian Cup.

I'm talking about the game in about early September 2007.

Before last night the Kuwait/Socceroo win loss ledger was that both teams had won 5 games apiece in head to head meetings.

Stop making things up.

We first played in Kuwait in 1977- so I suspect the FFA may have a comprehensive dossier on Kuwait weather conditions by now.

I'm not.

If you research it, the Socceroos, under Arnie, played Kuwait in some of the first few games in Asian Cup qualification in 2007 just after the 2006 WC.

Australia beat Kuwait 2-0 at home, then had the shock of Kuwaiti heat and lost in early September 2007 in Kuwait City.

I'm not disputing the 2006 result. I'm disputing your statement "the last time we played in Kuwait it was a disaster". It wasn't- we won 4-0.

not sure if you guys have seen the 11v11 website before but has pretty much every match record for every comp, below is link to AU v KW match history. Suggest you check out the squads used for the AFC matches in 2006, majority or Europe based players didnt participate.

Much as I like some of the personalities who are pundits on TV, I think we now have an era of superior, much more analytical stakeholders in football   who have played and coached in a new epoch of the game.

I'm really fed up with so much discussion in Australia, including TV pundits, about which club they play for as justification  for their appraisals of players.

Sains is not the player he was, but I'd like to hear pundits discuss technically, and through game sense criteria , where he is struggling compared to the Asian Cup 2015.

The newer generation  of currently unattached professional  players and coaches, like John Aloisi, Kevin Muscat, Phil Moss, Josh Kennedy are far more adept at analysing players' technical  strengths and weaknesses, using the four technical criteria of first touch/handling speed, running with the ball, striking the ball and attacking and defensive 1v1 skills. They have operated in a more technical and tactically sophisticated milieu.

They are also decidedly superior at quickly identifying Socceroo and opposition  game plans.

At one game, Fox had Aloisi and Muscat as the expert analysts.Their analysis was probably better than anything I saw in Europe when  when I was in France observing the last Euro Champs.

His gamble on choosing not to start their best regarded two attacking players probably had more to do with it.
