Even though at first it would at least appear to give them more of a specific identity, Wyndham is only one of quite a few council areas in the Western region. Naming it after that alone would be too limiting in terms of potential reach and appeal across the catchment area.that they are trying to tap into.

They would be more likely to add Melbourne or Victoria to their name than Wyndham.

I definitely see your point, they've always said they wanted to attract all of Western Victoria, but I wish they did go with a name like Wyndham.

I've always been of the opinion that people in a given area are obviously smart enough to already know the names of settlements in their area and should be able to support a local naturally named club if they want, instead of having a vague, amorphous, inorganic and cumbersome catch-all name attempting to suck them in which is ultimately a meaningless branding exercise and may really be counter-intuitive.

Ah well, at least they didn't stick with Victoria Patriots.

Should've chosen tarneit fc as they're going to be based there. Yes they have fans but imagine if they called it tarneit such and such . The people they are targeting yo become fans would latch on to the club .

I think Wyndham would have been preferable to Tarneit in the name if they went down that path, but the generic name was mainly chosen to broaden the reach, which is especially important in its earlier years.

Interestingly, they are yet to even play a match in the Wyndham area so far from what I have seen. Their current training base is in the City of Melton council, where most of their preseason matches were played, and home matches have been played at Geelong, Ballarat and Footscray.

Once they have settled into their new base, they can review things and may well make some tweaks to their branding in future if it is seen as a beneficial strategy at that stage.

There's no suitable ground for them   unless they want to play at Avalon oval and or in truganina where there's football pitches for truganina hornets or in pt cook.

An easy solution to giving a team a generic regional team name is to leave the public under no illusion what catchment area the team is to representing via marketing/advertising/community involvement.

Interestingly enough, it seems Macarthur have done this perfectly so far.

Excellent example.

No more "[Compass Direction] United" style names.

So this’ll end up being their new stadium? Don’t blame them really, the league is getting 12k viewers on TV, they were getting crowds of 3-5k, then there’s the uncertainty of COVID, it would be a big ask to spend over 100mil on a world class stadium. If they can increase the capacity with grassed terraces and hills then that’s all they, and the league needs, we don’t need big flashy stadiums like Suncorp.

also should’ve been Tarneit FC playing in white

Overlooking that "Tarneit" is the Wathaurong word for the colour white is perhaps the biggest mistake this club has made.

Regardless of the club name, it would have made so much sense, and a genuine identity builder.

Instead they just pinched Team 11's colours lol

Macarthur is only the southern part of the region the club seeks to represent.

It’s a good point about Macarthur, but I think the biggest challenge that WU had was that they wouldn’t be playing in Tarneit/Wyndham for a few year, unlike Macarthur.

I think that a change could well be on the cards in future though.

Agree that if they can get the 5k seat venue up to a minimum of 7.5k, that could well work for them.

With some corporate and broadcasting facilities in associated buildings that they seem to be looking to build, it would set up them quite nicely. The atmosphere would be great in a smaller venue, and having a limit on seats would actually give them a chance to make incremental expansion as required, instead of trying to fill 15k seats each week as it tries to find its feet.

Once they are ready to take the next step, and the existing venue is unable to be tweaked further yo accommodate growth, they can build a new stadium knowing exactly what their requirements will be.

Has there been any update on when WU plan to have an academy structure ready?

They talked about setting up a Geelong based academy in 2021 based on comments from 2019, but one would think it would be very important to start looking at a youth development pathway.

For those Scholarship youth players that signed with them last season it must be very hard having next to no chance to actually play matches.

Stay-away Burgess in contract stand-off with Western United

Western United are confident of resolving a standoff with unsettled attacking midfielder Max Burgess, who has yet to report back for pre-season training.

The former Sydney FC junior - who has a season left on his contract - has been absent without leave for the past nine days, remaining at his family home in the Harbour City whilst the club and his agent discuss his future.

A revelation for United in the second half of last season, the former Wellington Phoenix and Newcastle Jets prospect has become disenchanted at United and has been reluctant to return to Victoria - which is slowly emerging for a government-mandated lockdown.

However, United chief executive Chris Pehlivanis is looking to resolve a delicate issue amicably and bring Burgess - who struck six goals last season - back into the fold.

"Max is a contracted and required player and hopefully, we can find a resolution very quickly and he can begin training very soon,” said Pehlivanis.

A free Burgess would attract a raft of A-League offers, and possibly foreign interest, but United appear unlikely to yield to any requests to terminate his contract, viewing him as a key part of coach Mark Rudan’s quest to build on their debut campaign with another finals appearance in 2020-2021.

Club sources say the relationship with Burgess is not broken, and there’s no rancour between either party.

However, they are unwilling to set what they consider a precedent by simply releasing a restless player without compensation, instead preferring to “work with him” to solve the impasse.

Burgess’ representative, James Hardy, said: “At this moment I would like to refrain from making comments on the matter, as both Max and I would prefer to resolve the matter directly with the club."

“However, Max certainly has rights as a working footballer, which must be respected."

“He has acted in good faith and communicated his stance genuinely and respectfully with club officials.”

I think the real issue here and likely for many is that if the club wont honour the existing contract amd want a player to take a pay cut, that player is free to move on.
So presumably the players clubs want wont be getting pay cuts.

That makes some sense.
If WU are trying to get a pay cut out of him for his final year of the contract, then that act will make him a free agent.
On top of that, he might be reluctant to return to Melbourne until he is certain it's as safe as anywhere else in Australia.

For WU's part, if there is actually interest from overseas, then it might make sense to hang on for a transfer fee.
Burgess and his agent might view that as a hindrance to pursuing something better, might depend on what's in his contract.

Wu have reached an agreement to play at knights stadium for 20/21 . I wonder what they offered the knights as they refused mv and city many times over the years.  Also they need to make a move on with the stadium in Tarneit. Council can do so much and letting this drag on will test a lot of people's patience

Western United will go down in Football history for having the most uninspired name and logo anyone could possible dream up. I'm hoping that once their Stadium is don't they rebrand because my god they are so generic they stand for nothing.
