Hmm so are you saying that the Aleague is only for white anglos??? Your posts are a little confusing... Good luck to you Danny and the APL with the "building a club in a box and finding an investor for it" for 25 mill.... Ill be cheering on its "death" with glee. Reackon the oners of Victory would have a clearer "take" on expansion than you.

https://www.linkedin.com/posts/joe-mirabella-07006126_apl-confirms-expansion-of-the-a-league-with-activity-7042270824426323968-z46I?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_ios

Sure, in the medium long term p and r is where it's at, I think EVERYBODY including Townsend and APL knows that. Everyone! However it isn't as easy as just introducing p and r, given the NST hasn't even started yet. Who knows how it will go? Which clubs will success and which will flop? We don't want to be in a predicament where GC Knights with their millionaire owner and 500 seat stadium win promotion to the A league at the expense of Victory. So.. in the meantime the A league can expand into key and under represented markets, and and the NST can do it's thing, and then in a few years we can all sit around a table to decide what to do next, rather than this approach of everyone looking into their fake crystal balls and making fake predictions about the future.

I'm stoked about Canberra  and Auckland entering the A league, I can see 2024-25 being a big year for it. Two new teams, new derby, 26 home and away rounds, hopefully the WU stadium is underway, everyone back playing at their spiritual homes after years of transience and upheaval.

Canberra will comfortably be in the top 6 teams in terms of membership and attendances.

A very low bar, but they will be well set up from the off.

They have had plans in place for over 4 years i believe.

An A-league level stadium is already there, and id imagine this will help with a push for a new stadium too.

Auckland is a no-brainer. Big city, immediate rivalry, great stadiums to choose from to call home (Mount smart would be amazing). With 1.5 million people in the city, if they can gather 1% of them as an average crowd they will lead the league in attendance.

Responding to things a page at a time:

I thought of telling you were dreaming, but based off this season alone, we would only need to break 6k average attendance to hit top half of the league
Comparison of other Canberras
Raiders 2022 - 12620
Brumbies 2022 - Unknown (can only find opening match of season - 8000)
Canberra United 2022-23 - 1070 (7th in league)
Cosmos 95-96 (first season) - 2933
Cosmos 00-01 (final season) - 2183

i think in this day and age, 5-6k is much more achievable than thought of actually..

Anyone with some inside info greatly appreciated...

Just on the two teams and why they would pay 25 million each, I assume based on future projections, especially the broadcast deal...

The reason for this post is because APL said and lets assume it was not a lie to get them off the hook on the GF move.. but APL said, P + said, Football did not reach target numbers... so payment was reduced...

There would have been a lot of changes over the past 8 to 9 months... but worth analysis or certainty worthy of discussion is the June 2022 Australian streaming numbers ...

Streaming data as of June last year..

Netflix (6.3 million) remained the top SVOD provider at the end of June 22, followed by Amazon Prime Video (4.1 million), Disney+ (3.0 million), Stan (2.5 million), Kayo Sports (1.3 million), Binge (1.3 million), Paramount+ (1.1 million) and Optus Sport (1.0 million)

https://www.telsyte.com.au/announce...inment-defies-rising-cost-of-living-pressures

One thing that stood out for me was Kayo Sports has heaps of sports.... and 1.3 million plus whats ever is left on Fox.... Optus with only Football EPL & Champions League has 1 million....

But with P + having, 1.1 million subs, it difficult to think it grew that quickly without huge numbers of Football folk...

How many of the Paramount+ subs would have the add on Aleague sub though mate??? (Genuine question, sorry I dont know if it is one and the same) I guess they can tell, as it is a streaming service, at any given time what everyone is weatching... If 1.1 million people were streaming an Aleague game Im sue they would have not been talking about disappointing uptake from football?
Whats impressiver to me is that Kaya and Optus are fairly similar in number DESPITE Kayo having amny sports and Optus pretty much 95% of its subs just for football (Im being very very very generous about 5% subs for the fitness vids).

Those June 22 streaming stats to me say a lot especially about the EPL...

Put into a list

Netflix (6.3 million)... is rumoured they have lost viewers...
Amazon Prime Video (4.1 million),
Disney+ (3.0 million),
Stan (2.5 million),
Kayo Sports (1.3 million),
Binge (1.3 million),
Paramount+ (1.1 million
Optus Sport (1.0 million)

Willing to make the call now: there will never be promotion and relegation in the A League.
It will be akin to the United States, where second division clubs can apply to the join the A League.

We don’t often agree on things Charlied, but you are bang on the money here. A League owners will simply threaten to walk if there is ever a prospect of their team being relegated. The best thing that can happen from here is that the NSD is better supported than the A League and the A League folds.
The A League peaked in the first few seasons of WSW, and has been headed downhill ever since.

Anyone else heard anything about this?

”According to several reports, South East Queensland appears destined to obtain one of two future A-League expansion licenses in 2025-26. This would follow the entry of Canberra and Auckland a season prior in 2024-25, which was announced earlier this week. Gold Coast and a second Brisbane team appear set as the primary contenders, with Sunshine Coast touted as a hopeful outlier. Each option has its pros and cons, which will be examined here.”

Townsend has said recently these next two expansion teams were for new markets and the next two for derbies. You would think for derbies, being another Brisbane or Gold Coast team.

SEQ fans: “Do I start supporting an NST side, or just wait to see what happens with a second Brisbane ALeague team?” Same for sponsors.
Such mixed messages.
All these new expansion teams paying 8 figure fees is a guarantee of no P/R this decade.

Support the NST and the NPL. Until the A League make a genuine integration attempt they are not in my perview. Still watch on Paramount and Channel 10 when I can, but not attending games as such. Will be going to a couple of NPL games this year for the first time. Excited to see the pyramid building upwards. Pity the powers that be can't see the benefits of connecting downwards.

Precisely why the APL is rushing 4 clubs in.

I think they'll let in Auckland and Canberra as the first 2. Then the next 2 will be Auckland 2 Canberra 2. Canberra will be the battle of the cold lake derby. If it doesn't take off, they can call it the battle of the bridge because they have a bridge there. The teams will be called Southern United Definitely not Queanbeyan and Northern United Definitely not Queanbeyan. This satisfies the key criteria of the local market that you can abbreviate things and drop them in conversation. SUDQ and NUDQ. They will add a + after depending on demand. Each guernsey will feature a compass with a circle around either the S or N to differentiate them. Market research shows that 200% of respondents know what a compass is. This is proof that it's a good idea for a brand.

Auckland derby will fight it out to see who is the best Australasian.

Yeah it will be at least 3-5 seasons before p and r is even thinkable as the nst will be new. Apl will probably succeed with delaying tactics to push it back a couple more years. So my guess is 2028-2030 for p and r if both leagues go well enough

That's why some sort of blueprint or roadmap for this stuff would be useful right now, otherwise we are just speculating what could happen next.

Direction is required from them especially when the NSD gets created, it really needs direction after that.

Jj seems a bit conservative and will probably want at least one season of the nst (assuming it goes ahead) before making a roadmap. Certainly there will be no commitment to p and r before we have a decision what the nst will look like

I chose them as part of my select 14 in the NST. It is not inconceivable that they are upgraded to the APL from the NST.

Strong candidates also include: Brisbane City, Gold Coast United and Brisbane United.

Brisbane City is my tip if that is the case, mainly due to their experience in top flight, albeit a long time ago, finances and the requirement for a derby. Their ground is being upgraded as a training venue for the WWC as well.

Could just be Fong playing "chicken" with APL?
I believe Victory had a similar clause as in no other franchises can set up shop in the Melbourne marketing area for their first 5(7?) years.
Its like what MacDonalds stores have in their licensing agreements, you cant set up shop 100 meters down the road from another Maccas and compete with them fro customers.

Far out the APL are garbage. This announcement is so amateur and leaves such a high potential for the competition to have egg on its face (noting such an outcome is limited by the lack of mainstream media attention given to it and the entire competition at the moment anyway).

Get the A-League back in FA hands and have the club owners focus on actually fixing their own clubs first before they cause more damage.

Far out the APL are garbage. This announcement is so amateur and leaves such a high potential for the competition to have egg on its face (noting such an outcome is limited by the lack of mainstream media attention given to it and the entire competition at the moment anyway).

Get the A-League back in FA hands and have the club owners focus on actually fixing their own clubs first before they cause more damage.

since the fa decoupled from the a league we have had steps toward a nst and the final decision on p and r not made by the a league. The expansion is plausibly at least in response to the nst.

I don't think that is possible without the split.

Hopefully we get a better leadership structure in the a league though
