It seriously is a non issue talking about the MLS but thats its only way to compete against the usual bigger local sports is MONEY and they have plenty investors willing in doing so.
Is that to judge success ?
When you can buy a Messi its hardly a risk to the Club and governance/sponsers who all invested.
Trouble is it raised ticket membership costs and day tickets but what else will it achieve after he's gone, they have had many top flighters over the years, think back to ADP here, they can leverage heaps more than us.
Hardly and USA players making noise abroad after all these years, an exception now and then after so much $$$ invested.
Good luck to the USL they need it in spades full.

The other huge issue they have due to their system its costing heaps for Jnrs similar to here.
https://medium.com/@kendramackenziesantiago/the-soaring-costs-of-youth-soccer-in-america-a-global-perspective-10577a0f8aef
Just do a simple search on Jnr soccer as they call it, heaps of info.
Even Zlatan made comments about the costs having learned what goes on below.

Seriously leave following anything what the USA does, its a bubble and glitz show, we are not in their realm, all their sports are "shows" if you haven't experienced do yourself a favour and attend one or 3 as I have.
Its a wank fest.

The only way the MLS survived was a couple of billionaires bankrolled it for a few years and gifted stadiums to some of the franchises. One was Lamar Hunt, the other I forget. Hunt was also at the forefront of professional tennis and also heavily involved in gridiron I

99/100 countries in the world ALREADY have this though Muz, what does the exorbitant Ponzi scheme have to do with anything?

Junior Soccer was the most particpated sport activity in the US well before the MLS came along btw.

Two things Basketball was and I think still is the most participated sport in the US.

Its OK having the player numbers, and no idea if and when the investment into teams and stadiums would have taken place, without the MLS.
You may call it Ponzi scheme, and many do, however the facts belie that, MLS revenue streams are huge....

Very true, my understanding in 2004 the MLS was six months from being would up.... and at one stage one person owned 7 teams....

All this being true, and a very shaky start, today its booming..... revenues well over 2 billion, with over 12 million thu the gates...

Easy, click on the stadium links.   I don't know if wiki is 100% right or on the other hand any reason why it would be wrong, but it ties in with that article.

and yes, I posted that article last time you made this claim about the MLS

Many Local Authorities have been strongarmed into building expensive infrastructure at taxpayer expense and are now regretting it.

Just to help I went onto I think the biggest Football Football Forum in the US and asked them...

This is what Football fans in the US say.... I assume more comments will follow over the coming days, you can ask them if you like, or maybe the answers support your argument.

The revenue stream is huge because of the way it is set up mate..... The dollars and cents are massive Ive never argued otherwise... Yes it is a wonderful entertainment production for the paying customer, just like every aspect of life in the US they have found a way to make a shittonne of money from it, fantastic, Yes they have heaps of kids interested in playing the sport and paying through the nose to do so, great.... now what?

Dont we ALL want a competitive football ecosystem generating players for the national teams so we can dominate on the world stage? From a purely sporting perspective.. you knjow, on the football pitch? The US (and their MLS - lite APL counterparts who have invested into our country) certainly doesn't seem to....

Zero to do with it but it works for them. Just like owning a fuckton of guns does.

Everyone else thinks they're nuts but they don't see a problem.

Exactly right. We are witnessing the "final days of Rome" here.. They have managed to take capitalism to its its ultimate zenith. The divide is growing day by day between those who can afford to eat, work, be educated, receive healthcare, expect to be safe in their homes and have access to recreational activities like football.

They are the beacon of despair for a society which strives to appreciate beauty and freedom purely for the sake of freedom and beauty. Monetising, sport, arts, scientific endeavour and spirituality (religion) was a direct result of a new nation building itself out of a puritanical and colonial past and fearful of socialism and collectivism of any sort.

Yes it certainly drives innovation and progress at a MUCH faster pace than socialism but at the expense of what?

The American Dream (and Australian Dream for that matter) was once a driving force of an achievable comfortable future. A future filled with altruism, compassion and freedom from the oppression of the "old ways" of the haves and have nots.

Think about something as fundamentally basic as the Olympic Oath

Sport, any sport, by its truest nature is designed to be participated in "in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honour of our teams"

Not "we made 7 gazillion dollars last year for the 7 shareholders of the MLS"

Sorry for the leftard ramblings :)

Tasmania have just flagged interest and seem to have government backing according to leading Tassie sport journalist Brent Costelloe on twitter.

If this is true, put down your glasses, because they will 100% be in, which is a great result.

FMD it's a simple Tweet that says nothing of the sort

Says only that there's now a consortium, and that they're asking for $10.5m

Nothing at all to even suggest they have Govt backing

There's a State election coming right up and the Bid team has the former Labor Premier spruiking.

That is ALL so far

Thanks for the link, decent read. This quote got me, might be something we should aim to do here, if we aren't already:

you'll hear about a master lease or primary tenant, which is who essentially has the right of first refusal to use the stadium and who everyone else builds their schedule around

I doubt we already have this though, we are the one's building fixtures around concerts and other sports!

Well...
I'd be only looking at the return of the NSL.

Knights.
South
Preston
Wolves
Marconi
Olympic.

Can't see much from Brisbane. Not that I know the market well
I always thought the Lions were the only one that could step up. The fact they haven't says a lot. These guys started the roar. So they know better about what they're getting into.
Adelaide. Nothing exciting either. Adelaide City is not the  City of old.

Watch the rhetoric from JJ.
Something along the lines of "we have delayed the beginning of the NST, until we work with the club's and prepare them better etc etc "

Is it too early to say I told you so?

Or should we wait for the FA/JJ press conference ?

A champions league with a league clubs and a year delay i can live with if that happens. It is better than a year delay with nothing or a champions league model indefinitely

My worry is this becomes like a get smart skit of "would u believe" whittled down to nothing

What time of year for this champions league?
Winter?

I don't see how a champions league comp with A-League clubs can work, alongside a FA Cup competition.

It has to be one or the other.

Return of the end of season NPL Championship (extended version)

It's all panned out as expected.

No victory parade for anyone.
This "war" could see both sides "lose"
It's only based on the financial realities I've seen.

We could see the APL crumble and fall under the FA banner again.
Some clubs may disappear being replaced potentially by a couple of NST clubs.

FA well aware of this scenario. And that is part of the reason they haven't tried to make the NST work.

3 years tops.

I'm sure I did somewhere say the FA will push the champions league scenario.
And that would be it.
I say "delay" as that is the narrative from FA/JJ. To keep the natives at bay.

FA don't have the appetite to run a full blown H&A second division.
That was well known behind the scenes a long time ago.

You people who rejoice even though you say not so should be up in arms where our game is with the rest of us.....
In the sink hole actually, 2024 FFS and here we are typical australia, stuck with the past that was all wrong yet we are meant to have progressed/learnt and matured 20+yrs on, no we haven't.
A absolute POS Pro closed model that is running on fumes.

It's not about rejoicing.
I was arguing against this process because it was flawed from the very start.

It "kept the natives happy" for 18months.
No one questioned the process.
The financials should've been the first thing discussed and a solution found. It wasn't.
And now has led to the NST backburner.

The FA was buying time.
Clubs fell for it. The fans fell for it.
JJ was different they said. He's here for football they said.
No. It was just lip service.
The financial model was never gonna let it work.
That is what I was saying at the beginning of this process.
I said we'd be lucky to find 8 out of the 32 applicants.
I said the financial model implemented will cause it to fail.

People were blinded by the oasis promised.

I was up in arms about it early last year.
You guys have now joined me.

A closed comp has been in play longer than the 17 years the A-league has been in place.
By and large the NSL was a closed comp as well.
The challenges the aleague faces is not due to it being a closed comp. That's just an argument for people with an agenda.

The expectations of the NST will practically rule out all NPL clubs. There'll be applicants I have no doubt.
But most of them will be dreamers like the west Adelaide and Freo A-league bids back in 2018.

An NST can be implemented, but the expectations need to be reduced because it is important to get it up and running.
But I don't think the powers that be are that keen to implement it. Regardless of the rhetoric coming from JJ

As I said here... expectations need to be reduced to get the NST up and running.

I was never against the NST.
I knew that it was designed to fail.

designed to fail in what way ?
Due to the criteria to be met by the Clubs ?
The bond figure ?
The countless other clause's ?
The travel costs etc ?

So you read between the lines long ago the FA/JJ co ordinated and implemented a "vision" (designed to fail) to buy time back then and have predicted or visioned by X year they will press the GO button to free australian football in some new era ?
I don't know who to believe today.

What exactly are you asking here with this paragraph?

I don't think they want an NST. period.
And as it seems now, they can't implement a NST if they don't have viable clubs. JJ can pat himself on the back and say "I tried"

As I said earlier, I expect FA will take back the A-league. Perhaps integrate a couple of more ambitious clubs. And move on..

Will push the need for an NST further down the road. When JJ won't be around. And this process is a distant memory...
