For those of you who enjoy arguing about whether it is "its" or "it's". For those of you who feeling like throwing their laptop out the window when somebody says something about using poor grammar but spell it "grammer". For those of you who like to ponder the various uses of "whose" and "who's". And for somebody to be able to explain to me the necessity for the word "whom". ^^^ For those of you that like to complain when somebody starts a sentence with the word "and". For the people who like to say loose instead of lose.
Please voice your complaints and questions here...
I won't answer them but somebody probably will.

The thing that shits me the most is apostrophe misplacement. Surely it's not too difficult to figure out where to put them.

"Your" and You're". It's really not that hard to figure out:
"Your"-is an indication of possession. "You're" equals you are.
Comments such as "your an idiot" really annoy me.

My biggest nit pick would have to be new and knew.
I bought a new car from Barry. I knew him well.
New-Denotes something that is strange or uncommon to you.
knew- is actually the past tense of Know.
Grammar edit. I lol'd as well.

anth, your second point has a grammatical error. But of course, you designed it that way; using irony to highlight another irony. ;) Quote:And for somebody to be able to explain to me the necessity for the word "whom". Who is less specific than whom. As far as I can remember, it has something to do with subjects and direct objects: Convo 1: "He choked the man with the vuvuzela." > " Who choked the man with the vuvuzela?" ("I" being a subject) Convo 2: "Scouse Roar choked the man with the vuvuzela" > "It was whom that choked the man with the vuvuzela?" (S_R being the direct object) I think that's how it works; I'm no grammarian. Just think, "For Whom The Bell Tolls" - that's what I do. :P

What about using a comma before the word "and"?
Eg. I met up with Tony, Paul, James[,] and Greg.
I have been told by people not to use it and by others that it should be there.

I have been told by people not to use it and by others that it should be there. It varies depending who you are writing for and what you are writing. IIRC it has something to do with American vs British English. Unless you're writing an academic paper, I don't think it really matter these days. Personally, if I'm listing things like that I use an ampersand [&] - I haven't been pulled up for it yet. :P Edited by martyB: 27/7/2010 04:49:21 PM

I just bought a second hand copy of "For Whom The Bell Tolls" for $8 at a bookshop in Cronulla... So weird that you bring that up. I always think of it as "To whom it may concern". But I don't think I have ever used the word 'whom' in normal speak. One thing that kind of pisses me off slash I find completely hilarious is when people pronounce an h before the w in words like whom, whisk, where etc. One more thing I don't understand is the difference between whisky and whiskey.

Below is an example. I saw the itinerary, I want to join. In this sentence, a comma connects two independent clauses. To correct this, you can either put a period after the first independent clause or add a conjunction after the comma. I saw the itinerary. I want to join. I saw the itinerary, and I want to join.

Firstly, it's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' as it's not a direct quote. ;)
When people say 'when' from the lungs [h-when] it sounds badass. Listen to Malcolm X and other well spoken Americans from a while ago.
The most unforgivable orthographic failure is when people accuse you [in written/text] of being a retart, instead of a retard.

This whole thread reminds me of Scary Movie 4. The rip-off of The Village in that court battle, "I am for it, I'm against it"
He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

'Then' & 'than'. Generally, in any forum frequented by a high proportion of under 25's, most use both incorrectly. In a forum such as this with the average age closer to 7years, (ok, an exaggeration, but it seems that way at times) the majority use both words incorrectly &/or aren't aware the word 'than' exists and haven't clue of the meaning of 'then'.

There's one thing that REALLY irks me, but I can't remember what it is right now
Something makes me think it starts with D. 'de'-something as opposed to 'di'-something.
It will come back to me.

I want to remember what this 'de' thing is! It's a pretty common error around these parts. If all else fails I'll just troll through AF until I find someone making the error.
It probably doesn't start with a 'de/di' and I'm just throwing myself off.

This. I just can't take people seriously if they don't know how to spell or construct a sentence. I don't care if we are on an internet forum. It's still communication. If you spoke like that to me in person I wouldn't know wtf you were on about. Its because most of my generation and below fail at reading. A lot of people just aren't interested in reading books any more, whereas I've been reading them since I was a kid.

The thing I hate with grammar is how to numbers. If you are stating a year you use the numerical symbols (2010) but if you are stating something like a crowd number in your sentence you have to spell it out (nineteen thousand, five hundred and fifty six). I got pulled up all the time when I was at school.

Speaking of numbers... which formatting do you prefer?
1,000,000 or 1 000 000 or 1000000?
Personally I'm a sucker for a good comma.

Personally I'm a sucker for a good comma. I use all three. When I am doing rough drafts I use the third option unless I start getting confused about how large the number is. I then add the commas. When I am submitting work I use the spaces. I hate it when people use a comma as a decimal place it confuses me.

One of my gripes that I just thought of is referring to products by a brand name. Admittedly I do use some of these. But common usage has made the brands synonymous with their respective products - good for the companies I guess.
eg: "I need a panadol." Panadol is a brand, you need a pain-killer or paracetamol. "I need a band-aid." Band-Aid is a Johnson&Johnson brand, you need to harden the fuck up. "Get me a coke" (implication is usually more toward wanting Coca-Cola specifically rather than just any cola, but the fallacy still occurs when they really just want a cola).
"iPod" seems to be the universal term for '[portable] MP3 player' these days also.
There are others I can't recall right now. But you get the picture.
Funnily enough, 'google' became an accepted verb.

Quote:"iPod" seems to be the universal term for '[portable] MP3 player' these days also. That pisses me the hell off. Mind you, that speaks to the sheer volume of market share they hold.

This speaks to the volume of the market share they all hold (or once held). This form of colloquialism irks me, but at times things are just so synonymous with a particular brand that I don't really mind it. I can understand an older person who isn't tech-savvy referring to MP3 players as iPods. On MSN earlier you actually referred to my MP3 player as an iPod. :P
That Band-Aid response I have used before. Freudian slip on my part, until he showed me his cut... "actually, skip Bunnings, head to the medical centre."

At least we don't say "go xerox it" instead of "photocopy it" or "get a kleenex" instead of tissue.
I hate the iPod reference too. It just shows ignorance of better products out there.

My mates called toasties "Breville's". His whole family does... I don't fucking know why perhaps they have had a Breville appliance to make them for years or something. That pisses me off.

Jaffals or toasties are called Brevilles because they were the popular brand that made the device that cooks them. I mean, really? lol, no. You would say "This is why liverpool are better...". Something like that. If you wanted to use 'hence', you'd say: "liverpool has won more trophies, hence my understanding that they are a better team". The only time you could say hence and why together is if the hence was used as a discourse particle [serving an important yet non-standard function]. Even then it would be informal/non-standard/not exactly correct. (You may have me by default here; I dont want to come across as a prescriptivist and so realise that anything is acceptable if the context allows :P) If you use that same attitude (descriptivist) towards text-speak then you'd know that opting for a shorter alternative when communicating through technology serves a legitimate time-saving function. I do agree however that substituting or placing additional random letters in, eg. mu51cck (music) is pretty much unforgivable. Its only acceptable if youre trying to show some sort of group identity... and if thats the case then I fuck your stupid group. I cant recall what its called when one brand name is universally used to name a product and its pissing me off.

Quote:lol, no. You would say "This is why liverpool are better...". Something like that. If you wanted to use 'hence', you'd say: "liverpool has won more trophies, hence my understanding that they are a better team". If you were writing formally, or even an opinion piece, you'd quote the original question or contention, therefore it would be acceptable. It may not be the way you would go about it, but it's an acceptable use of the word. However, I agree with what you're saying that people using "hence why I took a shit", if they're (for instance) retelling an anecdote is bloody annoying. Quote:If you use that same attitude (descriptivist) towards text-speak then you'd know that opting for a shorter alternative when communicating through technology serves a legitimate time-saving function. I completely disagree with that, it takes me longer to decipher your "ur", "lol", "dats gr8", etc. than it does for me to read queen's english, or for the sender to even type it in normal english, especially when all phones come with the T9 function today and people don't use standardised abbreviations, my mother (#-o) uses 'da' to refer to my father, instead of the commonly accepted 'the'. I refuse to resond to text messages she sends me with abbreviations. Quote:I cant recall what its called when one brand name is universally used to name a product and its pissing me off. Urban Dictionary strikes again!
2. retarted
A retarded person's way of spelling the word "retarded." Ex: Han Solo is retarded for making a definiton for the word retarted without knowing how to spell it correctly.
"ZOMG I'M SO RETARDED I SAY RETARTED!!!"

Okay so here is where I am confused...
"Do you like shooting down peoples dreams?"
OR
"Do you like shooting down people's dreams?" (Apparently this is the correct version on Google)
So do you use the apostrophe in two cases?
1. It is = It's 2. Ownership for a group or for a name (*but not for a single entity when not using a name) Eg. - This is Kevin's ball. - That is the people's right.
* Eg. - That is his ball. (Not he's).
Fucking English.

Single spaces after a full stop... Although, I think these boards may auto correct it to 1 full stop.

I find that double spacing is more appropriate for certain fonts; the default for MS Word 07, Calibri, for one. Otherwise I just single space. Some academics I know demand double spacing (amongst other nit-picky things).

Actually I remember back in High School when we were introduced to Microsoft Works and some typing test program thing, the rule was single space for comma and double space after a full stop. Just doesn't seem to be used too often though. I remember in Works it was quite distinguishable and the double space was needed after a full stop, whereas somewhere like here, its not really needed.

Nazi is not a racist term, it is a political ideology term. Of course it has negative connotations due to the whole purity of race, pastoral utopian ideal that it was sprung from. Same as Communism. As for the double space thing, I only use it in essays - everywhere else it is common practise to use a single space.

Have you ever written the same word down so many times that it doesn't look like a real word anymore and you think you are spelling it wrong?
Same thing with saying the same word over and over again and before long you start thinking that the word sounds really weird and shouldn't be a word?
Eg. Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four Four.
Or am I just a weirdo?

I had that happen to me when I was trying to write specificity today... say that 10 times quick.
Something just as bad.. Im decent with spelling but some words get me. I know the correct spelling and the incorrect spelling. I can recall the times I was picked up on a mistake and the teachers who picked it up but I cant remember which one is the spelled the correct way! Makes me rage. Eg. seperate and separate. Opportunity and Oppurtunity. Theres some processing fault in my mind with just those words and I get confused writing them.
What pisses me off sometimes is when people have difficulty pronouncing words that arent even difficult to pronounce.

martyB wrote:One of my gripes that I just thought of is referring to products by a brand name.
Funnily enough, 'google' became an accepted verb. massive issue of mine. at work, i have a big habit of only prescribing by generic names (eg, paracetamol) rather than trade names (panadol). it's a principle things more than anything else. a deeply held mistrust of the pharmaceutical industry. what shits me most, however, is when nurses come up to me and tell me i've written the wrong thing because they don't recognise generics. epic failure of the system when nurses and trying to get me to rechart meds because they've never heard of their 'real' names.

Same thing with saying the same word over and over again and before long you start thinking that the word sounds really weird and shouldn't be a word? Nah, I have the same thing. It's because the repetition makes your mind start breaking down the word into individual syllables and sounds, obviously the sounds themselves and the phoenetics are nonsensical once you break it down enough. You actually use this in audio engineering to break down a sound into components, it's either very useful or very annoying. Quote:Thats another one - effect/affect. Fuck I hate the fox sports news writers. Every second story starts with "meantime.." on both channel 513 and on the FSNactive news list thingy. Its "In the meantime.." or "Meanwhile.." not just "Meantime..". It doesnt make sense you dumb cunts and the fact that it comes up every day pisses me off.

And then multiple posts in that thread using loose instead of lose.

Something I thought of the other day:
The word aren't doesn't make sense. When you say, for example 'Aren't you going to do it?'... break it down. You are saying 'Are not you going to do it?'
Weird.

I always thought of Grammar as the correct use of words in appropriate places, such as the appropriate uses of 'there', etc.
Syntax, obviously being the correct use of puncuation.
Spelling being self explanatory.
Ironically, bonkers, you've used lexicology and metalinguistics the wrong way around.
And "talkin lyk dis" being just retarded.

I think we could use the word 'about' more often.
I particularly enjoy the naming of the 'roundabout'. Perfect.

I received this email today from the FFA. Football Federation Australia wrote:Hello,
On behalf of Football Federation Australia, thank you for the 'hard yards' you have put in on the pitch throughout 2010. We hope you enjoyed the football season and the time spent with your teammates.
Hopefully, you finished the year with lots of great memories and new skills which will help you and your team hit the back of the net more often in season 2011.
By playing in one of the thousands of football competitions Australia wide, you have also contributed to securing the future of football in Australia, and for this we can’t thank you enough. You are a valued member of Australia's Football Family and we hope you continue to play and support the Qantas Socceroos, Westfield Matildas, Hyundai A-League and Westfield W-League for many more years to come.
With the football season fasting approaching, now comes a time to contact your local club to register to play in 2011.
Don't miss out on being part of the action again this year...!!
Good luck and best wishes for 2011. From Football Federation Australia

If we do the double, regarless of what else happens, the second ACL spot will 100% DEFINITELY go to the "runner-up of the A-League (Regular Season)" which in this instance will be the Mariners...
This thread: #-o #-o #-o #-o ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) Exactly. I started this thread to prove a point. Some people still don't understand it though. ](*,) The Doctor wrote:so have the AFC changed the rules or something compared to previous seasons? No. This is where I had read it in previous seasons when I was reading the regulations for the ACL for us. That's the thing, ned7 and RedsUnited. History (previous Prelim finals with ACL qualification at stake) shows what you are saying is wrong. The AFC regulations might suggest otherwise and that's why this debate continues. Here's a good link for you. It's the A-League Prelim Final from 2009. Adelaide defeated Brisbane 1-0, see par6 Quote:The win means the Reds will play their bogey side the Victory for the fifth time this season. It has also gifted them a place in the 2010 Asian Champions League. http://www.a-league.com.au/default.aspx?s=newsdisplay&id=26724This from 2008's prelim final, Jets 3 Roar 2, final par Quote:But the Jets were able to hold on for a memorable victory, a place in the Asian Champions league next year and a chance to win this season's Grand Final. http://www.a-league.com.au/default.aspx?s=hal_newsdisplay&id=21474&pageid=1001Edited by the-far-post: 8/2/2011 08:56:54 PM Figjam_3326 wrote:ned7 wrote:This is simple stuff. If we do the double, regarless of what else happens, the second ACL spot will 100% DEFINITELY go to the "runner-up of the A-League (Regular Season)" which in this instance will be the Mariners... Based on what has occurred during the past 5 season, you are WRONG. Having supported a team that has actually been involved in this scenario on THREE occasions, I can tell you that, in the past 5 seasons the ACL spots have gone to: 1. the winner of the A-League title 2. the winner of the A-League GF If 1 = 2, then the runner up in the GF gets the Champions League spot, not the 2nd place in the the title race. However, this may be different for 2011, since the Regulations seem to be pretty clear about what happens if the Cup winner = the title winner. Dear Muppets, The HISTORY of the A-League doesn't tell us shit in solving this arguement: Quote:2007 Champions League Qualifiers Adelaide United (2005-06 A-League Premiers) – Finished season 1st Sydney FC (2005-06 A-League Champions) – Finished season 2nd & won GF
2008 Champions League Qualifiers Melbourne Victory (2006-07 A-League Champions and Premiers) – Finished season 1st & won GF Adelaide United (2006-07 A-League runners-up) – Finished season 2nd & lost GF
2009 Champions League Qualifiers Newcastle United Jets (2007–08 A-League Champions) – Finished season 2nd & won GF Central Coast Mariners (2007–08 A-League Premiers) – Finished season 1st & lost GF
2010 Champions League Qualifiers Melbourne Victory (2008–09 A-League Champions & Premiers) – Finished season 1st & won GF Adelaide United (2008–09 A-League runners-up) – Finished season 2nd & lost GF
2011 Champions League Qualifiers Sydney FC (2009–10 A-League Champions & Premiers) – Finished season 1st & won GF Melbourne Victory (2009–10 A-League runners-up) – Finished season 2nd & lost GF
2012 Champions League Qualifiers Brisbane Roar (2010–11 A-League premiers) – Finished season 1st +1 (2010–11 A-League champions) –
The newspaper articles above only prove that the media have NFI what is going on. The rules quite clearly state that if the Champions & Premiers are the same team, the second ACL representative will be second place in the league. The history of the A-League shows that both the actual scenario and the "GF runners' up" scenario could be the answer, but to solve it very quickly, refer to the rules. Which haven't changed. Edited by ned7: 9/2/2011 07:29:18 AM Pal you're missing the point. Maybe you're a young fella or have a short memory, but when I refer to history I'm talking about past Prelim Finals being referred to as ACL deciders. You've still not offered any outright proof for your argument. You can go on about these regulations but they can be interpreted for either argument. The fact you say the regulations haven't changed reinforces my argument, as history (based on Prelim Finals) tells us if the Champion and Premier are the same team than the GF runner-up gets second spot. I don't think he is. The Preliminary Finals have been and still are in effect ACL deciders, e.g If CCM win then they gurantee themselves an ACL spot (not because they made the GF but because no third team can win the GF). If GCU win the preliminary final a spot in Asia is up for grabs in the GF if they win. This has been the same situation in the past.

For fucks sake people, is it really that hard? There is as in here - when you're talking about a place! - Their as in heir to a possession - as in it belonged to someone - and They're as in THEY ARE. It can't possibly be THAT difficult to get your heads around.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...when and is used instead of an....never understood how that came about.. :?
But I guess all these problems listed are because the English language is a hybrid piece of shit.

'of' instead of 'have' is one that is far too common.
eg 'Should of done better' ](*,)

What's more, he makes the mistake using the correct 'they're' at one point and then a dozen words later uses 'their' instead. I mean...what the fuck?

Because I'm not highlighting a smaller word within that tells you which case to use it in.

To be fair, they're from Newcastle. Can't have too high expectations of their grammar.

afromanGT wrote::lol:: doing well there champ. They're probably not used to using any pronoun except 'youse'. One of the great deficiencies of English is that we don't have a plural for "you", my students hated it, especially as there's two types of plural for it in Russian. I think it was pretty natural that we came up with "youse" and "y'all" here and in America respectively, and I let my students use it for colloquial conversations.

There's a word in Finnish for a Grammar Nazi: pilkunnussija. It literally means "comma fucker".

Most other languages have a plural of 'you'. German has 'sie'.

That would be even more funny ier. lmao You clown."

Too as in "as well", "I wanted to go to the movies too. It's spelled like 'to', but it has an extra 'o' as well.

Aussie4ever4 wrote:so what about "how to do something" is that to or too? If you're not sure, see if you can substitute 'go' or 'as well' into the sentence and see which makes more sense. "How [would I] as well do something" (too) "How [would I] go do something" (to) obviously 'to' makes more sense.
